Chapter 5 Emotional

"But I was driving the car, I was behind the steering wheel. I am the one that crashed into them. I am the one who took their lives, Mom. I killed them and I deserve to die and not them."

His mother shook her head in disagreement. "No, Alex. It wasn't you, it was the person who messed with the car. They are responsible for it and not you. Whoever did it will soon be caught and sent to jail. And I believe you will be able to walk again."

At the moment, Evans Edward. He entered the room; he had been standing outside, listening to the exchange conversations between his wife and his son. His heart was heavy with the weight of the situation. He felt powerless seeing his son in this situation, he had always prided himself on being able to protect his family, to shield them from the harsh reality of the world.

He gazes at his wife and son, Alex. "You are not a killer, Alex. What happened was a mistake, it wasn't your doing. You can't keep blaming someone for something that was out of your control." He muttered softly.

Alex's eyes darkened; his anger was giving way to a deep, hollow sadness. "You all aren't getting it. I can't live with this, I can't live knowing that I destroyed someone's life. I can't live knowing that because of me a woman lost everything that mattered to her." He said with a shaky voice.

Mr Evans glances at his wife before switching gaze to his son. He felt bad after hearing his son's statement, but there was nothing he could do to help or change the hands of time. "Alex, Look at me." He said, Alex refused to look at his Dad. "You need to let go of this burden in your heart, what happened has happened and you need to move on. You should be thinking about yourself and not them; look at your mother and me; how do you feel it would look if you were the one who lost your life." He asked.

"I don't care, father. It would have been better, not them."

Isla couldn't hold the tears as more streamed down her cheeks; Evans shook his head. "No, Alex. Don't give up, and we, your family, won't give up on you. We are willing to help you get back to your normal self. You have to fight, Fight for life, fight for your future. That's what the lady's husband would want, and that's what your mother, your brother, and myself want from you."

Alex refused to agree with his father's statement, "I don't deserve a future, I don't deserve anything." He said with his voice cracking with emotions.

Evans sighed heavily; he knew he needed to do something to help Alex, so he walked out of the room to call the nurse, leaving Isla with Alex in the room.

Alex, you are my son. We love you; whoever did this will be found and will be sent to jail. You need to help me fight, we need you to come back strong. I want to see the Alex I gave birth to." She said, with her voice filled with sadness.

After a few minutes, Evans came back with the nurse and a young doctor. He held his wife while they watched the doctor inject him with sleeping pills. Slowly, Alex felt dizzy, and he closed his eyes, responding to the effects of the drugs.

Isla cried softly as she watched what her son had become after the accident. They all walked out of the room leaving Alex behind to sleep.

*****

A few weeks after Hazel Mitchell returned home, and after the burial of her husband and baby. She stood before the mirror, staring back at her unrecognisable self. Her once long, dark hair now Lay in clumps on the bathroom floor, replaced by a short, uneven crop that barely brushed her ears.

The scissors in her hand felt heavy as if they were carrying the weight of the life she had just severed. She tried crying, but there were no tears left, only a cold, steely resolve remaining.

Hazel held that Alex's family was searching for a nurse to care for their son. She had applied with a different name, the name was Sandra Leonard. She has planned this moment for weeks; her transformation was the final step in leaving behind Hazel Mitchell, who has been shattered by grief.

She was going to take her revenge on the family members of Alex's for what happened to her family. With her new appearance and forged credentials. She was confident that she could slip in without raising suspicion. After all, Mr. Evans and Isla only saw her once when she was at the hospital with a swollen face covered with bandages.

There was no way she could be recognised, not when the woman who had been known as Hazel no longer existed. She examined herself once more; the short hair made her look more hardened and tougher. The bruises on her face had healed, leaving no scars behind; she looked like a different person, and that was what she wanted.

She drew a deep breath, "I will make sure no one in your family is left, I will make sure you all pay for what you have done." She held Alex's picture she had collected from the internet. "Your family will feel pain; each and every one of you will feel the same pain I am going through." She said with her voice dripping with desperation and determination.

Hazel stepped into the bathroom to wash away her pain for the last time in the apartment, she allowed the water to wash away her tears. After she was through, she got dressed in an old-fashioned attire that would make her look more innocent. She walked around the house for the last time as memories of the past flashed before her eyes. She could feel the presence of her husband around her. She made sure she burnt everything that would remind her of her old self or would create any suspicion while she carried out her task to eliminate every member of Alex's family.

She took her bag and walked out of her apartment; she was supposed to meet with Isla Edward, and if everything should work as planned. She would be inside the house working as Alex's nurse.

She took a cab, giving the cab driver her address where she was heading, and the cab driver nodded. Igniting the car engine and driving out.

Will she get the job? What is her second plan if she fails to secure the job as Alex's nurse?
