Chapter 2 Shadows of Responsibility

Kieran stood in his office, staring out over the sprawling cityscape. The sun had begun its slow descent, casting a warm, golden glow over the glass buildings that stretched toward the sky. It was an awe-inspiring sight, a testament to the empire he had built-a world of concrete, steel, and power, all under his control.

Yet, despite the satisfaction that came from his success, there was a gnawing emptiness inside him. Something that all the wealth and power in the world couldn't fill. He could ignore it most days, burying himself in work, meetings, and numbers. But today, the feeling was harder to shake.

His phone buzzed on the desk, breaking the silence. Kieran glanced at the screen. It was his mother again. A sigh escaped his lips as he leaned against the cool glass and let the phone ring for a moment longer. He knew what she wanted. She had been calling him almost every day for the past month, and each conversation had been the same-full of pleas, guilt, and subtle reminders of his responsibilities back home.

He swiped to answer, already bracing himself for what was coming.

"Kieran?" His mother's voice, soft yet firm, filled the space around him. "You didn't answer my call yesterday."

"I've been busy, Mom," he replied, keeping his tone neutral. "I have a lot going on with the company right now."

"There's always something with the company, Kieran. You promised you'd come home more often."

"I know, but things are different now. Running a business this size takes a lot of time."

A pause hung between them, the silence thick with the weight of unspoken words. Kieran closed his eyes for a moment, knowing what she would say next.

"It's not just about visiting, Kieran," she finally said, her voice softening with concern. "Your father and I are worried. You've been gone for so long... You're not getting any younger, and you haven't found a mate. Your father wants to talk to you about your future. We can't keep putting this off."

There it was-the real reason for her call. His mate. The conversation he had been avoiding for years.

Kieran rubbed his temples, feeling the familiar tension settle in. He had always known this moment would come, but it didn't make it any easier to deal with.

"I don't have time for that right now," he said, keeping his voice measured. "I'm focused on the business. It's not like I'm just going to drop everything and come running."

"Your father was about your age when we were mated," his mother pressed gently. "He didn't want to wait either, but the pack needs stability. And as future Alpha, it's your responsibility to find a mate and continue the bloodline."

Kieran clenched his jaw at the word responsibility. He had heard it a million times growing up. Being the future Alpha wasn't just about leadership or strength-it was about duty to his pack, to his family, to their traditions. And one of those traditions was finding a mate, someone to rule alongside him.

But that was the problem. Kieran had never been one to follow the script laid out for him. He had built this empire in the city, far from the pack's territory, because he wanted more than the narrow path his parents had set for him. He wanted control of his own destiny.

"I'm not ready for that yet," Kieran said firmly, his hand tightening around the phone.

"You say that now, but the longer you wait, the harder it will be," his mother insisted. "The pack is expecting you to take your place, Kieran. We've already started discussing the mate selection process with the other families. There are several strong candidates who would make excellent Lunas."

Kieran's stomach twisted. He could hear the excitement in her voice, the hope that he would finally come home, find a mate, and settle into the role of Alpha like he was supposed to. But the thought of being paired with someone he barely knew, someone chosen for him based on bloodlines and alliances, made him feel trapped.

He wasn't ready to go back to that life. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

"I'll think about it," he finally said, though even as the words left his mouth, he knew they were a lie. He wasn't ready to face that part of his life yet, no matter how much his parents wished for it.

"Kieran, please," his mother's voice was softer now, almost pleading. "I know you feel like the company is everything right now, but you can't forget where you come from. Your family, your pack... we need you. Your father won't be Alpha forever."

The words hit him harder than he expected. His father had always been a symbol of strength, unyielding and unbreakable. But even Alphas grew old. Even they passed on their titles. And if he wasn't there to take up the mantle, what would become of their pack?

"I'll try to come home soon," Kieran said, his voice low. "But I can't make any promises."

"Just come back when you can," his mother said, a hint of relief in her voice. "We miss you, Kieran. And I know your father misses you too."

Kieran hung up the phone, the weight of the conversation settling over him like a heavy cloak. He turned back to the window, watching as the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the city.

He knew he couldn't avoid it forever. One day, he would have to go back. One day, he would have to face the responsibilities he had been running from.

But for now, all he could think about was the life he had built here-far away from the expectations, far away from the pack, and far away from the mate he had yet to meet.

As the sky turned dark and the city lights began to twinkle, Kieran felt the familiar pull of the moon rising in the distance. No matter how far he went, no matter how much he tried to deny it, the wolf inside him would never let him forget who he truly was.
