Chapter 2 Professional Boundaries

Olivia made her way into the boardroom, and it was filled with tension. Alex could sense the discomfort in her voice, but her voice was steady. This was a surprise, and neither of them had anticipated it.

Their eyes briefly shut. Alex felt a tingling sense of uncertainty and possibly fear in her eyes. Suddenly she was back on her feet, a polished, composed woman who had worked in the corporate sector for years.

Alex said that despite the tumult he was going through, Bennett's voice remained steady, and he was looking forward to his audience's contributions.

Olivia nodded and replied with a formal and detached response. The night before, it was a distant and almost supernatural experience, amidst the sterile boardroom atmosphere.

Alex found it hard to stay focused throughout the meeting. His mind was constantly reliving the memories of their shared night, the electric attraction, the hurt of her misfortune, and the lingering scent of her perfume. It wasn't just a surface attraction; it was a deeper connection that was now threatening to ruin his carefully planned life.

This wasn't just a nuisance. Olivia was a big part of his career, and he had more responsibilities. Alex was always known for his ability to separate his personal and professional lives. Blurred lines, and he was not sure what to do.

Alex replied, 'Please follow the timeline,' but his voice is muted more than usual. He couldn't seem to be distracted, especially in front of his team. No matter how complicated or significant, his professional life wasn't impacted by any personal entanglements.

Alex looked at a few board members as the meeting ended. They knew it, even if they didn't know the details. He had to grab it fast. This would have turned out to be disastrous had he not managed it well to avoid the escalation to this extent.

Alex came out of his office and shut the door with a discouraged look on his face. The silence was a stark contrast to the chaos in his mind. He needed time to think and to accept this unanticipated event. His profession was built on control, precision, and careful planning, and there was no room for personal issues, especially those as complex as this.

Sitting at his desk, he looked at the picture of his dead father, a man who had taught him discipline and focus since he was a kid. Alex listened to his advisor and made his company a tech titan by taking risks. After years, he felt like the ground was shifting beneath him because he couldn't forget about the woman he was with that night.

Knock on the door, and he stopped thinking.

Alex was excited to welcome the visitor and said she was pumped.

Olivia looked in the room, her eyes planted, and she looked neutral. Her hair was neatly tucked into a backless ponytail while wearing a well-fitted suit. She was professional, but Alex was more knowledgeable. He saw the vulnerable part of her being hidden from view.

Alex leaned over onto the chair. Olivia stood up and crossed her arms defensively. They were surrounded by a vast expanse of land, with each passing second. The air was tense, and there was an invisible tension that had been crossed.

Olivia's tone was lowered, almost remorseful about their collaboration. This wasn't a planned event.

"I believe you," Alex said, his tone steady. "But it doesn't change anything."

She blinked at him, and for a moment he thought he saw something slip in her eyes, but whatever it was, it vanished before he could be sure-regret? "We're professionals," she reminded him. "We'll deal."

"Can we?" Alex asked, leaning forward. "Because if last night is going to affect how we work together-"

"It won't," she interrupted firmly. "Last night was a mistake."

Alex felt a stab of remorse as well as irritation at that.

Yes, she was correct, and for the record, I also believe that she was one hundred percent accurate. Because of this, they could not afford to give in to personal feelings, as they had a job that they had to do. It also did not mean that it was going to be easy or that stiffness was going to be absent either. The feeling that they used to be good together would quickly come to his mind, and regret would seep in. "Fine," he replied after a moment. "So we stick to business, and we leave anything personal out of it."

"Strictly business," Olivia repeated, although her eyes shifted for an instant as if the words didn't taste right to her. She walked toward the door, her right hand on the knob.

But before she could exit, Alex's voice stopped her.

"Olivia."

She hesitated, glancing over her shoulder with an unreadable expression, before the mask slipped back into place.

"What if it wasn't a mistake?" Alex let the words fall out before he could catch them, leaving his mouth dry as sand and his heart pounding.

Olivia said nothing, the silence stretching between them until finally it became an entity of its own. A few beats passed; one started, then another, but that's all they did. Just beat.

Without a word, Olivia turned and walked out, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts and a deepening sense of unease.

He sat in his chair, staring at the now-empty doorway. The conversation left many more questions than answers. The night they shared had introduced complications he wasn't sure how to handle. He had always been in control, but that control was slipping through his fingers.

Alex knew this was far from done. The intricate tapestry of who they were, both in their professional and personal lives, had only begun to come apart in front of Alex's eyes. There was something too big coming down the pike, an unmistakable sense rattling around inside him that the real reverberations were yet to be felt.

Wiggling back into his seat, Alex tried to return to work, but the creeping feeling that this was only the first few steps of a much longer and more convoluted journey kept tugging at him. They had been a prelude to the drama soon to be unfurled, and he prepared his crumbling self for utter sleeplessness.
