Chapter 10 The Turning Point

The apartment of Ethan was strangely still-that kind of stillness that magnifies each sound and whisper. Alex sat at the tiny table in the kitchen, his hands clasping about a cup of coffee that he hadn't even touched. His thoughts surged through the previous hours like a video replaying scenes from its last phase; with time, they had narrowed their escape and acknowledged how far-reaching the conspiracy was.

Opposite him was Ethan tapping away at his laptop; he searched for anything and everything he could find out about Jameson and the obscure network behind him. The computer screen illuminated sharply and shadowed his face, bringing out the tension in it. Alex knew that friend was as worried as he was, albeit not plainly.

"We have to turn this against Jameson," said Alex, breaking the silence. His voice was low yet full of their plight's burden. "He is attacking us while we just scramble to catch up.".

Ethan's eyes remain glued to his laptop. "I am working on it; we need something really heavy that can smash him down but at the same time prevent us from being harmed." That Jameson had done an impeccable job covering up made me dig deeper, intending to track him down.

He is now sitting back on his chair with his head bent down, rubbing his temples. "There must be something he left out." There's nobody who is so perfect, not even Jameson."

A light tap on the door made them stop. They looked into each other's eyes as if they were freezing. Nobody had been expected; in this kind of situation, people who are not known could come like thieves at night, hence alarming those present. Ethan slowly pulled out his weapon, which was hidden beneath the table.

"Don't move," whispered Ethan. He headed towards the entryway, treading without any sound whatsoever. He peered through his peephole while standing straight.

"Who is it?" Alex mouthed it with a racing heart.

Ethan shot him a glance before a surprise registered on his face briefly: "It's Olivia."

Without wasting time on narratives or explanations, she in her course rushed to open the door while still keeping her friend's weight at letting anybody see anything-an eerie sight indeed. Right at this time, someone seemed likely to interrupt their lives forever after all.

"What happened?" he asked as she sat down on their kitchen table, afraid every other time that asking such questions might unearth things best left unsaid. There was something dangerous about her movements, though, like prey moving away from the predator.

"I'm being watched," Olivia said, quavering. "Earlier today, I figured out that there were men following me around and cars monitoring all my moves. In order to rid myself of them, I tried, but they were professionals. I arrived here without being tails."

Ethan exchanged grim looks with Alex: "Jameson's tightening the noose around you now. He must know that you're involved in this business already."

Olivia nodded vigorously with her hands tightly pressed together in her lap. "I do not know how much longer I can keep evading them. We must take action, Alex! Running like this is not an option anymore."

Alex placed a soothing palm on her shoulder but had an agitated mind. Olivia was right-they could not continue to play defensively. They needed an offense strategy fast.

"Ethan," he called out, turning towards his friend. "We need something on Jameson-anything we can use against him as leverage. What have you gathered so far?"

Ethan sighed, running runny through his hair. "Not much, I'm afraid. Jameson has far-reaching influence and powerful allies, but..." He trailed off, narrowing his eyes at something on his screen.

"But what?" Olivia urged, leaning closer.

"There is this name associated with Jameson that keeps showing up," Ethan said slowly while his fingers were typing at supersonic speed. "A woman by the name of Samantha Lee always comes to mind whenever he deals with people from previous times within themselves. If we manage to uncover her, maybe that would be the missing puzzle piece to bring him down."

"Can you tell me where she is?" Alex said, filled with hope in his heart.

"No," Ethan said, shaking his head. "But I'm looking for her. She knows how to avoid being tracked; however, everybody messes up at least once."

Olivia glanced back and forth between them, looking determined. "We can't stay on this for too long. Close enough, Jameson is coming after us, and if we delay action, then he will make us feel cramped."

Alex nodded his head because he had made a decision. "Ethan, continue searching for Samantha Lee. We must find her out and learn some of what she knows about him." And Olivian would remain behind with us; cases would be too risky outside alone.

Olivia didn't object; she understood that there was much more on the line than just pride itself. "What is going to happen when we locate her?"

"Getting information out of her is important,' said Alex decisively. "Given that she is closely associated with Jameson, as Ethan believes, it's possible that she may provide us with the intelligence necessary for uncovering him. Nevertheless, we need caution. Jameson has already demonstrated readiness to do everything in order to save himself."

For some time they stayed silent, each man dwelling on his own thoughts; their atmosphere was tensed up since the truth could not be hidden from them anymore, but neither could they allow fate to take control over them either. At its peak were feelings of weighty responsibility together with desires for revenge, such as those associated with a changeover, which, if successful, would reverse everything.

Hours passed, and Ethan worked tirelessly on his computer, his eyes scanning lines of data and encrypted messages. Nearby sat Alex and Olivia, discussing possible scenarios and strategies in hushed tones. For some time now, Ethan was muttering under his breath but still remained focused on what he was doing while his brain processed thoughts that flowed like water from a tap.

Suddenly, as dawn broke, Ethan let out a triumphant noise. "Got her."

Alex and Olivia rushed to his side, peering over his shoulder at the screen. An address was listed right there amidst the web of connections and aliases. It is definitely a start, though not much.

"She's been hiding in a small town a few hours from here," Ethan explained excitedly. "It's a safe house, probably one of several she uses. But if we move quickly, we can catch her before she moves again."

There was sudden determination on Alex's face; they'd finally gotten what they needed. "Let's go. We don't have much time."

As they prepared to leave, the weight of what they were about to do settled over them. This was more than just an encounter; this was a turning point; it would decide all that they fought for in the future.

Ethan picked up his laptop and put it in a bag while Olivia checked her phone for any sign of communication from Jameson's people. Alex felt a strange mixture of fear and determination. They take steps they didn't know, but that's the only way to move forward.

Are you ready? Ethan asked.

Alex nodded his head. "Let's finish this." After one last inspection of the building, they headed into the morning light, their hearts set on one goal at a time: knocking out Jameson and reclaiming their lives. The road ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: they were in this together, and they weren't going to stop until the truth was revealed.
