Chapter 6 The sixth chapter

"We are here Ma" The driver called out to Laura who was lost in thoughts

"Hello?"

"Oh my God" she said snapping out of her thoughts

"Are we here yet?" She asked looking confused.

"Yes ma'am" He replied

"Thank you so much" She said as she opened the car door.

She made her way into her apartment and headed straight to her mother's room to check up on her but she wasn't in bed and she began to panic

"Mum?" She called out while opening every door in the house.

"I'm here Laura" Her mother's faint voice called out from the kitchen.

"Oh my God" She said wrapping her in an embrace.

"I'm so sorry I left you all alone. I thought I was going to come back early. I didn't know I was going to sleep out."

"My darling daughter, it's fine. I'm not angry. In fact, I'm happy that you are doing things for yourself. You spend so much time taking care of me. It's only right you take some time to unwind."

"Thank you Mum"

"At least I was able to stand up and make breakfast for myself." She said chuckling

"I'll take it up from here, you can go and rest." Laura said while escorting her mum to her room.

"So did you enjoy yourself last night?" Her mum asked

"Well, surprisingly I did." Laura replied

"You are a good child. You deserve this and even more." She replied with a soft smile across her lips.

"Thank you mama but I need to go continue making your breakfast. We can ask me all the details later." She replied while standing to her feet.

"Okay, darling. I'll be waiting" She replied still smiling

She quickly made breakfast and served her mum. She already had breakfast at Alexander's house so she was okay. Even if she didn't have breakfast, the events of last night was enough to fill her up.

It was Saturday so she didn't have to go to the firm and her shift at the cafe was not until 1pm. She still had enough time.

Her phone began ringing.

I wonder who that is, she whispered as she made her way to the phone.

"Oh my God, Anita" She gasped as she looked at her phone.

"Hey girl. I'm so sorry about last night." She said immediately she picked up the phone.

"It's all good girl. My man came to pick me up after you left me for that fine ass man." She said teasing her

"I'm sorry Anita" Laura responded

"Now I need all the tea. Alexander Russo? Girl, how on earth did your paths cross?"

"He came to see Mr. Carlos at the firm and that's it."

"That's it?" Spill the tea. I don't like suspense

"That's it. He was just staring at me. He tried to engage me in a conversation and that was it. I was so shocked to see him at the club last night." Laura replied while pacing round the room.

"So you spent the night at his place?" Anita asked curiously

"Yes I did. I don't even know how that happened. I'm still in shock" Laura responded lowering her voice.

"Girl, you just hit a jackpot. Almost every girl in this country is in love with that man and you just got him easily. You are lucky my friend." Anita replied

"Hell no. Whatever happened was a mistake and that is it. We are from two different worlds, how do you think he can be with someone like me. He has rejected rich and successful women. So what makes you think I stand a chance with someone like that. That chapter of my life is closed. I was just a one night stand to him." Laura replied almost in tears.

"I'm sorry Laura but if he didn't see anything in you, your meeting with him would have just ended at the office, he wouldn't have walked up to you at the club but let's leave it at that." Anita replied

"Thank you girl but I have to go"

"Bye girl" I might stop by the cafe later this evening." Anita replied

"Love you"

"Love you too" Laura replied while hanging up the phone.

"There's no way Alexander could possibly like me. Wake up Laura" She muttered under her breath.

As the day began to wear on, Laura began dressing up for her shift at the cafe.

She quickly made lunch for her mother and returned to her room to get dressed. She was almost running late.

"Hey mum" She said while struggling to put on her shoes.

"I'll be leaving now. My shift starts in 30 minutes. I made lunch and it's in the red flask in the kitchen."

"Thank you Laura" She replied

"Alright. Bye" Laura replied planting a kiss on her cheeks

"Don't hesitate to call if you need me."

She hurriedly got to work and immediately began her work. As she worked, the details from last night kept coming back to her. She couldn't stop thinking about him, the dance, the kisses, his smell, she just couldn't keep him out of her mind.

"This is not normal. I think I'm losing my mind and I'm sure he has completely forgotten that I even exist while I'm here beating myself up for a man that is way out of my league"

"Laura... Laura" Joey the head chef called out to her

"Yes Chef" She snapped back to reality.

"I've been trying to talk to you for a minute now but you seem really distant today. Are you okay?" He asked, concern spread across his face.

"Yes, I'm fine" She replied trying to fake a smile.

"Is this about your mother's sickness?" He asked

"No, My mum is getting better."

"Well, if you need a break, do let me know cause this is quite unusual." He replied while heading back into the kitchen.

"Thank you Chef. I really appreciate." She replied

"I need to catch my breath for a minute." She whispered as she made her way out of the cafe.

Meanwhile, Alexander was at this penthouse battling his own emotions.

Never ever has a girl ever made him feel this way. It was unusual.

He spent the whole day thinking about her and this made him restless as he wanted to know more.

"She's different" He thought to himself

"She didn't seem to be fazed by me and that is quite new cause most ladies always threw themselves at me."

"She didn't even want to spend more time with me. Is her mother really sick or it was just a means to leave my house?"

"Laura Thompson. Who are you?"

All these were the thoughts that clouded his head throughout the day.

And suddenly a thought hit him. He dropped his glass of wine on the table and made his way out of his room.

He walked briskly into his office, picked up his phone and dialed some numbers.

"Good day sir" The voice at the other end of the receiver said almost immediately

"Run a background check on "Laura Thompson. I need every single detail, do not leave out anything, no matter how unimportant you think it is and I need the reports before the end of today."

"Yes sir."
