Chapter 2 Getting To Know You

I couldn't stop thinking about Jackson, the mysterious stranger who was now staying in our guest room. Who was he, really? And what brought him to our home?

At dinner that night, I tried to act nonchalant, but I couldn't help sneaking glances at him. He was charming and witty, regaling us with stories of his business ventures. My father laughed and clapped him on the back, clearly taken with him.

As the evening drew to a close, I found myself walking alongside Jackson to the living room. "So, Jackson, what do you like to do for fun?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

He smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I'm a bit of an adventure junkie, I'm afraid. I love trying new things, exploring new places."

My heart skipped a beat. That sounded exactly like something I wanted to do with my last year.

"I've always wanted to travel more," I said, feeling a pang of wistfulness.

Jackson's expression turned serious. "You should do it, then. Life's too short to wait."

I felt a shiver run down my spine. Did he know about my diagnosis? No, impossible. I pushed the thought aside.

As we said our goodnights, Jackson turned to me and whispered, "Hey, Cecilia? Can I talk to you for a minute?"

My heart raced as I followed him to the garden. What did he want to say?

"Listen, I know this is forward, but...I feel like there's something special about you, Cecilia. Would you like to grab coffee with me tomorrow?"

I stared at him, my mind reeling. Was this a date? And did I want it to be?

"I'd love to," I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper.

Jackson grinned, his eyes sparkling. "Great. I'll pick you up at 10."

As I went to bed, my mind whirled with excitement and nerves. What was I getting myself into?
