Chapter 5

How could he be here?

I was overwhelmed with emotions. Conflicted and unsure, my legs gave out, and I sank into the chair. But I reminded myself that this was the best opportunity I'd encountered since having my baby. I fought the urge to flee and forced myself to face him calmly.

Brenden raised an eyebrow, his gaze as cold as ice.

"Hello. Please introduce yourself."

I recited my well-rehearsed background once more. He sneered.

"Kaelyn, a graduate of the prestigious Spring Academy of Fine Arts. Impressive credentials. Your work history seems stable, but there's a gap of over a year. Can you explain what you were doing during that time?"

His question left me speechless. If anyone else had asked, I could have confidently said I was pregnant and gave birth. But with him, I couldn't bring myself to say it.

Seeing my silence, he shifted his position, crossing his arms and leaning back into the leather sofa with an air of arrogance. He scrutinized me with a mix of elegance and haughtiness, far from the simple boy I once knew. Perhaps this was the real him.

I once thought he was too reserved to talk about his family because they had little. But later, when I saw him on TV, I realized he was the heir to a billionaire fortune. I had believed our paths would never cross again. I never imagined he was the heir to the renowned Wade Group.

I took a deep breath, but before I could speak, he continued.

"Kaelyn, right? How long did your last boyfriend last in his job? Not even three months before you dumped him? Your loyalty is questionable. A woman like you is not suitable for our company. You need to leave now."

Tears filled my eyes. I didn't want to miss such a good opportunity.

"I didn't work for over a year because I was pregnant and gave birth."

Brenden's face grew even colder.

"So, when you said you'd wait for me, you meant you'd marry someone else, have a child, and start a new life. Fine. Very well."

He threw my resume to the ground, causing the teacup on the table to shatter into pieces. The loud noise made the secretary outside poke her head in.

"President, is everything alright?"

He glared at me, genuinely angry. But I couldn't understand why. He was the one who had hidden things and left. Why did he act as if I had wronged him?

At that moment, my phone rang. I answered it, and my mother's anxious voice came through.

"Kaelyn, Brendan is missing."

"What?"

Panic overtook me, and I lost my composure. My mother explained that my grandmother had taken Brendan out to play. A girl had approached, saying he was cute and asked to hold him. My grandmother agreed, and the girl's mother started chatting with her. When my grandmother realized it, Brendan was gone.

"Call the police!"

"I already did. Your grandmother fainted from crying, and I just took her to the hospital. She said if we don't find Brendan, she won't live."

"This was a planned kidnapping. Mom, take care of Grandma. I'll go find Brendan."

After hanging up, I prepared to leave, but Brenden grabbed my arm.

"Let go!"

"My son is missing. I need to find him!"

Brenden hesitated before releasing me.

"Stay calm. The police will follow up after you report it. What about the child's father? Aren't you going to call him?"

I looked at him, seeing worry replace his earlier anger. For a moment, I didn't know if I should tell him. As the president of the Wade Group, he could find someone much faster than I could. And besides, he was Brendan's father.

For the safety of my child, I finally spoke.

"Brenden, you are the child's father."
