Chapter 3
I sat on Ryan's hospital bed, reaching out to touch his cheek, but my hand passed right through him. I couldn't touch anyone.
After Theo finished talking with the doctor, he held Ryan in his arms. "Ryan, Daddy's here," he said, his voice trembling.
He replaced my hand, gently caressing Ryan's face. When he closed his eyes, tears fell like a broken string of pearls. But Ryan didn't react to Theo at all.
I knew he was terrified and wanted his mom, but I could never appear in front of him again.
Theo held Ryan for a long time before letting go. He wiped away his tears and said, "Ryan, I will avenge your mother! If the law can't deal with that man, then I will!"
Panic surged through me. The man who killed me was a huge brute. If Theo went to confront him, it could end in mutual destruction!
Though I resented that disturbed individual, I wanted Theo to live well with Ryan. Ryan couldn't lose his father too!
I shouted at Theo to stop, but he resolutely walked away.
At the same time, I felt an invisible force pulling my soul along with him. It was as if an invisible string tied us together.
Wherever he went, I followed.
Along the way, I spoke many words and thought of ways to stop him, but in my current spiritual form, I could do nothing.
I could only hope for someone to intervene, that someone would appear to stop Theo.
Soon, that person appeared.
But I didn't want it to be Valerie.
She hesitated before speaking, "Theo, I know what happened to Emely. I..."
She bit her lip, her eyes gradually reddening. "Theo, it's all my fault. If I hadn't called you away, Emely wouldn't have faced this..."
Theo looked up. "Valerie, let's not see each other for a while."
Valerie was stunned. "Theo, are you blaming me?"
"No, I just want to spend time with Emely. Ryan needs me too, so let's not meet for now." Theo walked past Valerie.
I breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe Theo hadn't done anything to betray me after all.
But Valerie wasn't willing to give up. She rushed forward and hugged Theo. "Theo, I know I was wrong. If it weren't for my daughter's depression, you wouldn't have taken her to see the fireworks, and Emely wouldn't have died..."
"I'm sorry, Emely."
Theo gently removed Valerie's hands. "Valerie, let go."
"Theo, I know I wronged Emely, but I can't help it. In the three years since we broke up, I haven't stopped thinking about you for a single day!" Valerie cried loudly, attracting the attention of many passersby.
But Theo forcefully pushed Valerie away. "It's been over between us for a long time. We both have our own families now. Let it go."
"But you came to me because you still have feelings for me!" Valerie shouted at Theo's back.
Theo stopped and turned around. "Valerie, my heart belongs to Emely."
Watching this drama unfold, I was stunned into silence.
Theo said his heart belonged to me.
All the previous bitterness and grievances vanished because of that one sentence.
However, as I followed Theo, I saw someone in the crowd who surprised me.
