Chapter 2

Theo arrived at the police station to find my parents already in tears. The moment my mother saw Theo, she rushed over to him. "Theo, Emely... she..."

She glanced at my lifeless body, and if it weren't for the police officer supporting her, she would have fainted on the spot.

Just yesterday, I had been talking to her on the phone, but today, I was nothing more than a corpse.

A disfigured, bloodied corpse.

Theo stood at the doorway, unable to move, as if his legs were weighed down with lead. He blinked several times, murmuring, "So the call was real..."

At that moment, a female officer spoke up, "We couldn't reach you, so we contacted Emely's parents. I'm sorry for your loss."

Theo's Adam's apple bobbed as he tried to speak, his eyes reddening with unshed tears. "I... I didn't know..."

Seeing him cry for me made my heart ache.

Did this mean that I still held a place in Theo's heart?

If Valerie hadn't come into the picture, perhaps we could have continued to love each other.

But fate had other plans.

After arranging for my parents to be taken home, Theo followed the police to give his statement. When he learned that the murderer was a person with a mental illness, he became extremely agitated, pounding his fist on the table. "Mentally ill! Just because he's mentally ill, he can escape justice?"

Wesley, the head of the criminal investigation team, sighed. "The murderer was caught red-handed while killing your wife. His guardian immediately produced a mental health evaluation report..."

"Fake! It must be fake!" Theo clenched his fists, his eyes burning with rage. "How could they have a report ready right after the murder? I strongly believe this was planned!"

"We've considered that possibility as well," Wesley said, putting a hand on Theo's shoulder. "We've arranged for a specialized evaluation. As soon as we have results, I'll inform you immediately. Please, accept my condolences."

Theo covered his face with his hands, tears streaming through his fingers.

I sat quietly beside Theo, listening to their entire conversation. His sorrowful cries tugged at my heart.

"Emely... I never wanted this to happen..." Theo's voice was choked with sobs.

I never expected him to be so heartbroken after my death.

"Theo, stop crying. Our son is still in the hospital. You should go see him." When that madman attacked me, I had protected our son with my body.

Though he wasn't physically hurt, he was deeply traumatized. His cries of "Don't hurt my mommy" still haunt me.

But I could only stay by Theo's side. If he didn't go to the hospital, I had no way of checking on our son's condition.

Just then, Wesley returned and said, "Mr. Davis, your son is currently receiving treatment at First Hospital. You should go be with him."

He sighed, mentioning that our son, just two years old, was in shock when they rescued him.

He was speechless.

Theo suddenly stood up, muttering "Ryan."

Ryan was our son.
