Chapter 7 Confrontation

6. Confrontation

Wynter lay in her hospital bed, lost in thought as she stared at the monitor, wishing for someone to support her in making the right decision. With trembling steps, she had just swiped her card and entered the room.

"Okay, Wynter, are you sure about your decision, or is there any external influence?" The doctor's inquiry made Wynter gulp nervously as she shook her head in response.

"Alright, let me explain the process since there's no turning back now. Since you're still in your first trimester, the abortion process is relatively straightforward as the baby is not fully developed. No surgery is required; regular medication will be sufficient," the doctor explained, suggesting an additional scan to assess Wynter's body's readiness for the prescribed medication.

"Okay, I'm ready," Wynter nodded, feeling a shiver pass through her chest, questioning her decision.

Wynter gasped as she observed the movements on the screen after the doctor activated the equipment. As a medical student, she recognized the significance of the tiny dot on the screen, realizing it was her baby.

Wynter's eyes filled with tears, prompting her to turn away from the screen. The doctor examining her quickly interpreted her expression.

"I'll step out for a moment. In the meantime, take the opportunity to contemplate and make the best decision possible," the doctor stated before excusing herself and leaving the room.

Wynter jumped from her bed, gripping her head tightly, feeling uncertain about her next steps.

Returning swiftly, the doctor arrived before Wynter could finalize her decision. She handed Wynter some tablets with instructions to take them. Wynter snatched them and hurriedly left the room.

Upon stepping outside, she was taken aback to see her parents waiting there.

"Why are you both here, Mama Iris, Daddy?" Wynter inquired, her eyes wide with curiosity and her heart racing.

"Perhaps the question should be directed back at you, Wynter. What brings you here, and is there something we should know?" Sabrina's tone was stern, a departure from their usual interactions, leaving Wynter apprehensive about the impending conversation.

Wynter, feeling the weight of the situation, asked her mother for a private conversation once they reached home. Meanwhile, Travis, her father, expressed concern and curiosity, seeking reassurance about Wynter's well-being and the reason behind her visit to the gynecologist.

Wynter had made a firm decision to disclose the truth to her parents upon their return, urging them to reciprocate. As they made their way back home, Sabrina and Travis inadvertently stumbled upon a message concerning a hospital transaction involving Wynter's card, prompting them to rush to the hospital, only to find Wynter consulting a gynecologist.

Upon returning home, an air of tension enveloped the room as Sabrina and Travis sat facing each other on the sofa, while Wynter nervously occupied another seat, bracing herself for the impending conversation.

Breaking the silence, Travis initiated the dialogue, but Wynter remained silent. Sensing the urgency, Sabrina decided to address the matter directly.

"Wynter, are you pregnant?" Sabrina's direct question caught Wynter off guard, intensifying the pressure she was already feeling. The unexpected inquiry left Wynter feeling overwhelmed, unsure of how to respond.

Wynter paused, taking a deep breath. "Yes, I am," she admitted with a nod. Sabrina and Travis were visibly surprised, exchanging glances before refocusing on Wynter.

"Sean, right?" Sabrina inquired, seeking confirmation. Wynter simply nodded in response.

"Let's not jump to conclusions. Could you please explain everything from the beginning?" Sabrina requested gently. Wynter proceeded to recount her relationship with Sean and how he had left her.

"That's why I didn't want to have the baby. I couldn't bear the thought of him growing up without a father, so I chose to terminate the pregnancy," Wynter confessed tearfully in front of her parents.

Enraged, Travis expressed, "That scoundrel! I'll kill him. And Wynter, why didn't you tell us?" His tone was stern, causing Wynter to flinch at the unfamiliarity of it all.

Wynter hesitated, stammering, "I-I..."

"Spare her, Travis!" Sabrina interjected, admonishing him for his approach, noting how he was unsettling Wynter.

"What's wrong, Sabrina? So much has been happening in her life, and she didn't feel comfortable sharing with us. Do we hold no significance in her life? Are we meaningless to her?" Travis countered, his frustration evident in his words.

He felt deceived and like a failed father for allowing his daughter to keep so many secrets from him. "Travis, give her some space," Sabrina urged. Travis was about to argue when Sabrina raised her hand to halt him. She knew this could lead to a situation they both wanted to avoid, especially when Sabrina addressed him by his first name. "We'll discuss this later," Sabrina stated, "but right now, I'd like to have a meaningful conversation with my daughter."

Travis sighed. "Okay, fine." He sighed again and walked away from the scene.

"Did you terminate the pregnancy?" Sabrina asked abruptly. "Is that why you went?"

Wynter paled in her position.

"I did go there for that reason," Wynter admitted, nodding with her head bowed in shame.

Sabrina felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her. "And did you go through with it?" she asked hurriedly.

Wynter took a deep breath and shook her head. "I couldn't go through with it. I went there with a purpose, but I couldn't bring myself to end the life growing inside me, especially after witnessing its presence," Wynter sobbed.

Sabrina approached her and embraced her. Wynter let her emotions flow freely, feeling like she was in the safest place on earth, shedding tears that had been held back for a long time. It was the release she needed. Sabrina stayed by her side, giving her daughter the support and space she needed. As a wise woman who understood the minds of children, she knew that guiding her daughter was crucial to prevent hasty decisions that could impact her life.

Once Wynter had calmed down, Sabrina gently ran her fingers through her hair before stepping back. "Feeling better now?" Sabrina asked.

Wynter nodded and sniffled. "Yes."

"Alright, I'd like to share some advice with you. Are you ready to listen?" Sabrina asked.

Wynter nodded, wiping away her tears.

"Okay, let's start with your father's behavior. Please ignore him. He was really angry at the prospect of someone hurting his kid and needed to release his rage. But don't be concerned. That is the type of individual you must meet at some point in your life," Sabrina sighed.

"It's okay, Mama Iris. I recognize that what I did was wrong and that dad has every right to be upset with me," Wynter took a deep breath.

"Okay, secondly, I want you to realize that we are not attempting to impose ourselves on you. You're an adult now, mature enough to make your own decisions and comprehend what you want out of life. We have never forced decisions on you and would never impose them on you, but it is our obligation as parents to assist you when you make mistakes anywhere. So, my love, all we want is for you to include us, or at the very least let us know what's going on in your life. Maybe we could guide you in the proper direction?" Sabrina patiently and gently explained her thoughts to Wynter.

"I wanted to tell you everything, Mama Iris. I even attempted it. I understand that your advice is for my benefit. Everything is clear to me now, especially after this... but I couldn't bring myself to tell you or daddy anything. I promise I tried, particularly yesterday, but I needed to talk to Sean first," Wynter confessed.

"Oh, I see, that's alright. And now, what have you decided? Are you going to keep the child? Is there anything you intend to do with it?" Sabrina inquired.

"I'm at a loss for words, Mama Iris. I couldn't bring myself to abort the baby, so I decided to keep it. I have no idea how to care for it or whether I am ready for the kid, but all I know is that I want to keep it," Wynter stated in desperation, her voice getting hoarse yet more.

Sabrina gently massaged Wynter's cheeks. "Follow your heart, my darling, and do whatever seems right to you. Take your time, study everything, and whatever decision you choose, we will be there to support you," Sabrina whispered, and Wynter nodded, closing her eyes.

"Okay, I think you should focus more on your health now and relax, okay?" Sabrina smiled and kissed Wynter on the cheek. "I'll go talk to your Idiot Daddy; he could be going insane inside," Sabrina chuckled. Wynter managed a slight smile.

She made her way to her room and settled on her bed, feeling a sense of relief washing over her. Gently massaging her stomach, she pondered the life growing inside her. Reflecting on her journey, she made a firm decision to become a great mother, providing her child with the life it deserved. Determined to make a lasting change, she resolved to no longer live the same way and instead strive to be a better, more rational, independent, and successful individual. She aimed to build a future where she could look back and feel proud of herself.
