Chapter 5 5

The month-long separation period felt interminable.

After the divorce, I was miserable for two weeks, so much so that I couldn't focus at work. My supervisor criticized me several times.

As a doctor, it's hard to imagine the consequences of getting distracted during surgery. After much deliberation, I decided to take a half-month leave to heal myself first.

Luckily, I am quite stubborn. When I was in love with Tristan, no matter how he treated me, I was willing to follow him. But now that we were apart, no matter how much I missed him, I wouldn't go back to him.

Half a month later, as the separation period was about to end, I had almost fully healed.

When we met again, Tristan was radiant and lively, with a smile on his face. It seemed that this child had allowed him to regain his pride in front of his father and Brian.

After getting the divorce certificate, Tristan was even happier. Seeing his smile, I was momentarily reminded of when we first got married. At that time, his rare smile made me mistakenly think he liked me. Later, I realized he just wanted to get married quickly to have a child. Unexpectedly, we didn't have one in three years.

Kelsey also showed up. She wasn't showing yet, standing not far away and looking at us with a challenging look. The last time I saw her, she was just an ordinary subordinate of Tristan's. This woman was more capable than me, but she didn't know that Tristan only wanted a child and money, not a wife.

Tristan and I didn't speak. Just as I was about to leave, Kelsey came over. She gave me a calculated smile. "Jayme, Tristan and I are getting married soon. You're welcome to come."

She wanted to irritate me, but she didn't realize I had already figured it out. I said, "Sure, don't forget to send me an invitation."

Kelsey's smile froze on her face, and even Tristan was taken aback. They might have been wondering why I, who had always been so submissive, could say such a graceful and composed thing at this moment. Only I knew that once I stepped out of the role of Tristan's wife and looked at him again, it was just that.

Tristan slowly furrowed his brows. "Jayme, you adjusted quickly. Just divorced and already moved on?"

I curled my lips. "While you and Kelsey were sweet together, I was at home drinking heavily every day. It's been a month. If I still couldn't move on, I might as well quit being a doctor."

"I'd get fired from the hospital."

Kelsey hooked her arm around Tristan's. "Tristan, what did I tell you? She's just pretending. She can't have children but wants to monopolize your money, so she endured the humiliation. It's all for your assets."

I was slightly surprised. "You don't know that Tristan and I have always lived on a basis of splitting expenses equally, do you?"

Kelsey's expression paused. "Splitting expenses equally?"

She looked at Tristan. "Why didn't I know?"

Tristan shifted his gaze, his tone the same as when he told me. "We haven't gotten married yet. I was planning to tell you before the wedding."

"Kelsey, even though you're pregnant, don't think you can rely on the child to gain status. I'll take responsibility for everything related to the child."

"But you're an adult. You have to learn to support yourself."

The atmosphere fell silent at that moment, and Kelsey's face turned visibly upset.

The two of them, one wanted a child, the other wanted money. The one who wanted a child didn't know the child wasn't his. The one who wanted money didn't know they would still live on a basis of splitting expenses equally after marriage. They truly deserve each other.
