Chapter 6 Typically Two Reasons

She didn't need to think twice about the sender's identity. How predictable!

With a mix of amusement and disdain, Selena cast her phone aside, opting to drown her annoyance with a swig of her drink.

The potency of the alcohol caught her off-guard, leading to a sudden fit of coughing. A hand reached out, patting her back, accompanied by a soft voice that said, "A drink like that should be sipped slowly."

The voice was unmistakably familiar.

Selena turned to find its source and was greeted with a familiar face. "Harold," she exclaimed with a smile.

Harold Matthews, the twin brother of Selena's closest friend, Lilly Matthews, had always been an endearing presence in her life. With his kind demeanor, gentle speech, and ever-present smile, Selena had always thought of him as a brother she never had.

"Why are you here by yourself?" Harold inquired with a grin, taking a seat next to her and signaling the bartender for a drink.

"With Lilly still overseas, I don't really have much company," Selena replied, a playful smirk forming on her lips. "And you? What brings you here?"

In the bar's dim lighting, Harold noticed a rare warmth in Selena's demeanor, making her appear all the more endearing. He reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "I had a client meeting here," he said.

Selena, her attention back on her drink, asked pensively, "Do you think there's a breaking point to how much one can endure?"

Harold could tell that she was in a sour mood, but he was wise enough not to ask her why.

Sensing the weight of her question, he replied gently, "Everyone has their limits. But it's crucial not to give up when everything seems bleak."

"Is that so?" Selena gazed into his eyes as tears crystallized in hers.

Elsewhere, Giselle meticulously removed all the chili and coriander from the food before setting the plate before Kenneth. "Taking care of your dietary preferences might be a lifelong task for me," she remarked with a tender smile.

Kenneth responded absentmindedly, his attention briefly diverting to his phone when it illuminated with a new message, casting a shadow over his expression.

Later, at ten o'clock in the evening, Selena went back home and found that the villa's living room lights were still on.

She entered the code to unlock the gate and, upon stepping inside, noticed Kenneth standing near the French windows.

His presence was unexpected, especially at this hour.

He stood, unmoving, his demeanor resembling that of a statue; silent and imposing.

She wondered if he had been there long enough to see Harold drop her off.

Considering she had resolved the company's pressing issues earlier that day, Selena didn't anticipate any grievances from him. But then, she wasn't particularly inclined to engage in lengthy discussions either.

Switching from her heels to more comfortable cotton slippers, Selena commented nonchalantly, "Mr. Powell, you're home early. Were you waiting for me?"

Selena reeked a strong scent of alcohol. Kenneth's expression was shadowed, his gaze chilling.

"You're always so self-assured, aren't you? And now, you've taken to new heights," he remarked with biting coldness.

Choosing not to engage, Selena simply flashed an unaffected smile. She turned to head upstairs, but before she could get far, Kenneth forcefully seized her wrist.

His grip was so tight that Selena felt as if her wrist might break. Infuriated, she challenged him by saying, "What are you trying to do?"

"Are you so desperate for male attention? Can you not go one day without seeking out another man?" His voice dripped with disdain, his eyes reflecting pure contempt.

He unleashed a torrent of insults upon her, each word seemingly crafted to wound her deeply. Just how much did he want to trample her underfoot?

But instead of rising to his provocations, Selena regarded him calmly. "You know, there are typically two reasons a married woman might seek attention elsewhere. Either her husband can't satisfy her needs, or he's too busy with someone else to care about his wife. I wonder which one applies here?"
