Chapter 8 An Annoying Ellen

"And you're just telling us this now?!" Ellen was ready to tear the man apart.

"Calm down Ellen, let's hear the doctor out." I felt like screaming too but I could not.

It would solve nothing actually. Every part of me was disoriented in that moment. Should I let the tears out? Should I just run away from here and go bury myself in my bed and hope this nightmare would be over?

"I did not want to bother you incase it was untrue. But I just had to say it just in case it was also true, so you'll be prepared. Especially you Mrs. Bertram. You're the wife." The man spoke in a professional tone but I could hear the unspoken sympathy.

He was unfazed by Ellen's outbursts. Probably had been yelled at a lot in his career that it had become nothing to him. His gaze was on me rather than Ellen.

"So if your diagnosis turn out to be true doctor, what will be the next step?" I sounded like one who had been defeated in a war and I would not blame me, I was tired. Exhausted actually.

"You'll just have to prepare yourself to deal with a lot of challenges. Some families who can not do it or are too busy to, end up getting a medically certified caregiver to help. You can do that." He advised.

I nodded. "Alright. Is there anything else doctor?" At this rate, if there was anything else, I would faint.

"Who'll be paying his medical bills?" He looked from me to Ellen.

"I'll pay." I said.

"You have access to his account?" Ellen asked, looking quite surprised. Why was she surprised? That I could not have access to Blake's account? She was right if that was it. I did not have access to his account.

"No, I do not." I shook my head, wincing a little at the throbbing of my temples.

"Then how will you settle the bills?" She quirked a brow.

"I have some money saved. I'll use that." When I said Blake had been supportive, I meant it. He opened an account for me and personally made it his duty to deposit unbelievable amount of money almost every day.

I never touched it because I had no use for it and since he was not in the position to pay for anything, I would do it.

"Hm." Was all she said.

"Doctor, write down your account details and the medical bills, and I'll have it wired to you." I told him. I had developed an headache, I just wanted to lie down.

"Alright, ma'am. Go meet the receptionist and she'll give you the details. She keeps tabs on the medical bills of patients too, she'll provide that for you." He informed me.

"Alright, thank you doctor." I turned on my heel and walked towards the receptionist desk. "Hi again, I'll need the account details of the hospital and my husband's medical bills."

"Okay, ma'am." Her fingers plucking the keyboards of her computer fast, she produced the necessary information I had requested and passes it to me.

"Thank you." I read the printed words on the paper. My eyes almost bulged out of their pockets. What the hell?! This place was quite expensive!

This would almost empty my account, if not totally. I sighed. This was a favor for Blake. He had kept to his words and supported me when need be, this was my own way of supporting him right back.

"Anything the problem, Riana? Let me see the bills." Ellen took the paper from me. Her eyes quickly went through everything printed on the sheet. She just shrugged and handed it back to me. "Not that expensive."

Not that expensive? Well, I could not expect less from her. She had grown in a wealthy home and only knew expensive things, saw them as nothing too. "Yeah, let's go."

I folded the paper and stuck it in my back pocket. She was still the one who took the wheels and drove out of there which was fine by me. I still did not trust myself to handle the steering.

"Will you go visit him tomorrow?" Ellen asked, glancing at me before focusing back on the road.

"Of course. Why will you even ask that?" I was beyond exhausted and moody.

"Geez! Sorry. I was just asking a question." Her tone told me she did not appreciate the way I had responded to her.

I heaved another heavy sigh. "Sorry, I'm just...my head's about to burst. My thoughts are all over the place."

"It's okay. I understand." A short silence enveloped us. Then she spoke again. "I can not believe Blake will not be able to walk again."

I turned to see her shaking her head as though she could not believe it. "May. Nothing is certain yet. The doctor said it himself."

"Riana, if a doctor says something like that, then there's a eighty percent chance it's going to happen. The remaining twenty leaves room for the 'probably not going to happen'. Doctors are smart. That man would not have said it if it was not an option."

For some reason, her statement was riling me up. Why was she saying things like that? Was she not even hopeful that Blake could come out of this walking fine and healing wholly?

It was best not to reply her. It was obvious this was my cross to carry alone and I would continue to hold on to the hope that Blake would be fine. Very fine infact. When he would finally come out of his comatose state, he would walk out of that hospital on his own.

Whatever the doctor had said or Ellen believed, it was not for Blake. The doctor had made his diagnosis as a maybe so I was going to take it as a probability and believe that the possibility of getting well was higher.

The gate opened and she drove into the compound. "What a day we've had, Riana. We need to regain the energy we've lost. Don't you agree?" She was driving into the garage.

"I'm not hungry." I already understood what she meant.

"Wine then?"

"What are we celebrating?" I was trying to control my anger at this point.

"Not celebrating, just relaxing." She dished out a smile, oblivious to my inner feelings.

"Ellen, your brother is in the hospital with the probability he might not walk again and you're thinking of relaxing?" The disbelief in my tone was unmistakable.

"Now you believe he might not walk again, huh?" She cocked her head.

I muffled a growl, got out of the car and stormed inside the house, heading for my room.
