Chapter 5 Fortune

Moving on,I asked"what's the relationship between the assailant and you?" With a quick reflex, her gaze were now fixed into my eyes,as if she could see my soul. She replied without any emotion in her voice"the assailant...he's my husband...the man I married...the man I trusted."

Leaving me feeling sympathetic towards her but I still kept my straight face,of course this wasn't a surprise to us,it's a common fate that happens to most of those married women, who couldn't fight for themselves.

I asked my next question,my voice firm but calm "can we get any info of your husband?" still without the emotion in her tone she replied while looking forward into a deep void"his name is Okoye Adam, born on August 1, 1985" I could hear the agony in her voice as her eyes darted on me and my partners before looking away.

I went straight to my next question "how long have you been married to him and when did him start abusing you and your son?"

With pains in her voice, she replied "I have been married to that beast of a man for the past seven years, but I and my son have been trapped in the cycle of domestic violence for the past five years"

Without wasting time,I asked"and have you ever reach out to anyone about this?" With a slight nod, dropping her head down out of shame, she replied "No,because I believe he was going to change and I was thinking of what the society will think or say about me."

Anger began to rise within me,as I clench my fists tightly, biting my lips to keep my emotions in check,my brows furry with questions,as I said with a mockery tone"what the society will think or say about you(sigh)" before asking"and do you still care of what the society will think of you?"

With immediate reply, she answered waving her hands as a sign of her words "No ma,all I care about now,it's the safety of my son and I,nothing more."

With this reply of hers,I felt a sign of relief,as the hospital breeze cool down my temper, but still, the fire in me that burns hasn't quite been extinguished,as my anger in me was now targeted on that man or should I say that beast. I say to myself, just you wait and watch,I'm going to teach you a lesson,on how to be a good father to your son,and a good husband to your wife, that you would never ever forget this lesson even in your next life.

Looking down on mrs okoye glory, her stained face made the anger in me boil harder. I couldn't contain the anger anymore, saying "that will be all for now" as I found my way out of the room, jerking the door open, followed by my teammates,Ray and Robin, leaving that pitiful woman alone to be envelop in the silence of her own reflection.

.....

As the minutes ticked by,the constant pacing of Alex could be seen by all passengers by,all turning their sights towards the direction of the cute little boy,as he kept pacing back and forth like that of a matured adult.

Meanwhile, the same cannot said about miss Ruth and the kind stranger, who were there sitting calmly waiting for the police officers to be done.

Just immediately the door swing open, welcoming the muscular female officer and her male accomplices.

As they all moved quickly together towards our direction, carrying their body with pride and honor, from wearing a Nigerian police uniform,a symbol of their duty and responsibility.

Now,standing right before us,the female officers said with an authoritative voice"we are done" just these few words of hers, gave me goosebumps,as my imagination run wild, wondering what these two crazy looking uncles and this muscular aunty has done to my mom.

My heart now racing with curiosity, plus the constant ticking of the clock. I covered my ear with my tiny hands, trying to get a grip of myself,as my eyes began scanning the entire hall,I could see both the medical team and patient receiving treatments, turning their gaze towards out direction.

Slowly I let down my hands, but my breathing hasn't stable, due to the rapid beating of my heat, alongside the rattling of the patient wheelchair and murmuring of this adult, making me more agitated, with this tension,I couldn't wait any longer, carrying my two short legs dashing into the hospital room, leaving behind the unconcerned elements.

As I found my way to the other side of the wall, I was still breathing heavily out of fear,of what does officers had done to my mom. With a sharp glance I looked up at the hospital bed,I saw my mom looking drained.

It felt horrible, because her face had been painted black and blue due to the injuries and bruises, just then her face lit up,seems she had recognized my presence in the room,as she spreads her hands widely with a smile displayed on her lips.

I charged toward her, carefully giving her a huge hug. Just then, miss Ruth and the kind stranger walk into the room step by step, their shadow aligning with each other.

Not a word was heard,as the room was shrouded in complete silence. Not until the kind stranger broke the silence, saying,"if you are ever planning to get justice and fight for the peace and survival of you and your son,I'm here"

His statement left us befuddled,as we all kept blinking our eyes in confusion. Seeing our reaction,a charming laughter escape his lips, before saying,"sorry for not formally introducing myself,my name is Peter James,a well-known prosecutor in all legal firms, known for hardly losing a case in court. So if you ever need a lawyer right now,I'm right here beside you,to fight the case for you and your son,and as for the fees, you don't have to worry about it."

Just as this statement escaped his lips,a ray of sunshine penetrated into the room, illuminating his beautiful presence,as an angel sent from above.

Suddenly,I felt a warm drop of liquid on my arm, looking up at my mom's face, her eyes were filled with tears, despite that a smile was still spread across her face.

Moreover, her lips quiver a few times, unknown on words to utter,as she finally forced the words "thank you" and kept repeating it with gratitude.

Even though this two words are common phrase used among people, the way she said it held a lot of emotions, that unbeknownst to me,two rivers were pouring down my eyes.
