Chapter 5 MISSION SUCCESSFUL

It was just 10 AM when Brent arrived at Mitchell's residence in Las Vegas. Now, he was sitting across from his father-in-law on the terrace. He wasn't asked how he was feeling, because the answer would definitely be no different from yesterday. Especially since he saw the tense atmosphere in the house, adding to his nervousness.

"How are you, Brent?" Mitchell asked after taking a sip of his coffee.

"Good, sir. How are you? Sorry, sir, I've never visited before," Brent replied.

The middle-aged man smiled, then leaned back leisurely. "No problem. Your mother and I are happy to hear that you and Alyssa are healthy and happy."

Brent could only force a smile when Mitchell mentioned happiness. He realized that his marriage, which had only lasted a month, had not brought happiness to Alyssa. He even neglected to protect his wife, allowing her to continue to be consumed by fear.

"Brent?"

Mitchell's voice echoed in Brent's ears. Finally, the noise in his mind was set aside for a moment.

"Sir, I..."

Suddenly, Brent felt his throat tighten as if blocked by a huge stone. The words he had arranged so carefully couldn't come out.

"What's wrong, Brent? Just say it," Mitchell urged patiently.

"Did something happen between you and Alyssa?" Mitchell guessed.

Brent hung his head. All the self-assurance he had crumbled away. Only regret and guilt now dominated him.

"Grace... isn't she coming home?" Brent asked quietly.

Mitchell immediately adjusted his sitting position to be more upright. The relaxed atmosphere that had initially prevailed changed suddenly, becoming very tense.

"What do you mean, Brent? Alyssa has been almost a week not coming home to avoid you. She's busy with her classes. Why? Is there a problem?" Mitchell asked.

Mitchell tried to control himself. The man took several deep breaths to regain his composure. Although it was difficult, he tried to stay calm, knowing his daughter had gone to her husband's house.

"Sorry, sir," Brent replied.

"I came here to meet Grace and resolve our issues. But... it turns out Grace isn't here," Brent continued.

Mitchell wiped his face roughly. "What's really going on, Brent? You must know, Alyssa isn't the type to just avoid problems! She won't just leave without a strong reason."

In his heart, Brent agreed with Mitchell's words. Alyssa was indeed a rational and mature girl. Sometimes she was even wiser than Brent, who was always defeated by his own excessive jealousy.

"It's all my fault, sir," Brent answered helplessly.

"If you know you made a mistake, you should immediately find Alyssa and fix it," Mitchell said sternly, his voice filled with disappointment.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Do you know? I really trusted you, Brent. From the moment you first came to me and asked for my blessing to court Alyssa, I truly believed you would take care of and make her happy. But now, what have I been hearing from you?"

Brent didn't offer any defense. He chose to remain silent and accept all of Mitchell's disappointed outbursts because he deserved them.

Suddenly, Mitchell grabbed a piece of paper and a pen that were always available on the terrace table. He wrote something on the paper and then handed it to Brent.

"Try going here," Mitchell said, directing his gaze to the paper with an address written on it.

Brent felt a bit relieved. At least now he had a chance to meet Alyssa after Mitchell told him where she was staying. The place wasn't too far from Las Vegas city.

"Thank you, sir," Brent said sincerely.

...

For two days, Alyssa stayed there and didn't contact Brent at all. Sometimes she allowed herself to feel a bit more at ease, moving away from the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy the cold air in the place her late mother loved.

It was now late afternoon. Alyssa was still sitting on a rock at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level. As far as she could see, Alyssa could only see a stretch of green from the expanse of grass. It was only green, yet it was not boring. However, Alyssa felt very calm. Even though occasionally attacked by longing for Brent. She held back the desire to contact Brent and listen to his voice.

She turned her gaze to the ring on her right hand. A faint smile appeared on her lips when she thought that soon the ring would be on her left hand. Soon the ring slipped off her finger like a stone falling, leaving Brent and her to protect each other. The inherent threat was so terrifying that it made Alyssa have no other choice but to leave Brent.

"No. You can't be weak, Alyssa," she said softly, looking up. She held back the tears that were about to fall.

If she really wanted to end it all, Alyssa should do it calmly and wisely.

Since the dark night was soon approaching, Alyssa decided to leave the place. She walked leisurely along the asphalt path, flanked by lush trees on both sides. The air felt colder, piercing through her skin even though she was wearing a thick cardigan.

"Alyssa?"

The girl turned when she heard her name being called by someone. Then, she smiled upon seeing the figure calling her.

"William?" greeted Alyssa.

"Come here. Join us," invited a man named William, who was around his early thirties.

Alyssa had known William since arriving at his villa in the highlands of California. His villa was not far from Alyssa's. They became acquainted because William was also from Las Vegas. The difference was that William came with his friends for business, while Alyssa was on a mission to escape from her husband. Of course, William was unaware of this reality.

"Expecting guests?" asked Alyssa when she saw various meats and vegetables on the table in William's villa courtyard. There were too many, so Alyssa concluded that someone would be visiting tonight.

William chuckled. "No. It's just us being greedy," he joked.

"Just sit," exclaimed William's friend named Delon.

"Yeah. Let William do the grilling," said a tall, skinny man. If Alyssa remembered correctly, his name was Ian.

"Ready!" Alyssa replied.

The barbecue proceeded smoothly and certainly entertained Alyssa. William and his two friends' antics somewhat lifted her spirits.

In addition to enjoying the grilled meat cooked by William, they also chatted about various topics. Delon and Ian recounted their experiences when they first arrived in California. They felt like they were in a different world because of its cool climate, which was very different from their hometown, Jakarta. Then, William also shared his experience of meeting Alyssa.

"I thought you were still single," William revealed with a grin.

"Sold out already. Don't even hope," teased Delon.

"Who's hoping? What I meant was if Alyssa were still single, I'd introduce her to my brother," retorted William.

"Liar. Don't believe him. This guy lies a lot," joked Ian.

Alyssa just kept laughing to respond to the banter of the three men. Even her stomach felt a bit cramped from laughing too much.

"Alyssa, have a drink. Laughing too much dries up the throat," Ian joked again while handing Alyssa a glass of warm orange juice. "Thanks Ian," said Alyssa, then began to sip the pale yellow drink.

Alyssa's body felt warmer. Her throat also felt much better.

"Oh, by the way. When are you planning to go back?" William asked while chewing on a piece of meat in his mouth.

Alyssa shrugged. "I don't know yet. I feel like I'm already comfortable here."

"Huh? What about your husband?" Ian interjected somewhat excitedly.

"Well, he's probably looking for another wife," joked Delon.

The man with short black hair immediately received a smack on the back of his head. The perpetrator was, of course, Ian.

"Don't make someone else's wife overthink, you," grumbled Ian.

Alyssa could only shake her head while trying to suppress the sudden headache that attacked her. It seemed to be because of the cold air.

"What's wrong?" William asked, concerned, noticing Alyssa grimacing a few times.

"It's okay. Just a bit dizzy," Alyssa explained.

At first, it was just a slight headache. However, as time passed, the dizziness only worsened. Now, Alyssa's vision was even spinning, she couldn't focus on her surroundings.

"Alyssa?" called Ian, who was sitting in front of Alyssa.

"Alyssa?" Delon also called out loudly just as Alyssa dropped her head onto the table.

The girl lost consciousness.

William, Ian, and Delon exchanged glances. Their facial expressions changed in just a few seconds. There were no mischievous smiles or humorous expressions from the three men. Instead, there was only a terrifying blank expression. Suddenly, William pulled Alyssa's hair, lifting her head, then he gently knocked her head against the chair's backrest. The impact didn't wake Alyssa up at all.

William then looked at Delon. "Let Janice know... mission successful."

To be continued...
