Chapter 4 FINAL DECISION

"Janice," he said sharply.

He then tried to call Janice. Fortunately, it didn't take long for him to hear her voice.

"Hello? What's up, Brent?" Janice asked, sounding surprised.

"I need to ask you something, Janice," Brent said seriously.

"Okay. What do you need to ask? Go ahead."

Brent took a deep breath to control the surge of emotions he was feeling.

"About the threats you experienced."

There was silence for a moment. Janice seemed taken aback that Brent would bring up such a dark and terrifying event from her past.

"Janice?" Brent called.

"Y-yes?" Janice responded, sounding a bit flustered.

"I'm sorry if I'm making you remember that again. But I need to know about it, Janice."

"Who's the victim now, Brent?"

"My wife."

"Brent, you can't just let this go. You need to find solid evidence to put them in jail. They'll never change. You see? Now they're even daring to threaten your wife."

Janice's tone was emotional as she delivered her long statement about the perpetrator. She also made Brent realize that his decision four years ago was very wrong. Because it turned out that the second chance he gave that person meant nothing.

"Brent? Brent?" Janice called.

"Yes?"

"You're not just going to stand by, right?"

Brent shook his head, even though he knew Janice couldn't see it.

"I won't be complacent again. I will find the evidence."

"Good. By the way, when can I meet your wife?"

"You've already met her."

"Oh, yeah. But, i want to meet her again."

"Yesterday. At the supermarket. You've already met her."

"Why you so obsessed with her?"

"Wife. She's my wife," Brent corrected, not accepting her statement.

"Hey! Yesterday you ignored her, so why did your attitude change like this?," Janice scolded.

"Let's not discuss that."

"Are you guys fight-"

Before Janice could finish her sentence, Brent ended the call. Knowing Janice loved to argue with him, Brent was sure that if he didn't end the call, they would end up in a long argument. He put his phone in his pants pocket, then stood up. His eyes gazed at the sky, which was blue this morning without a single cloud hanging.

"I hope you're okay, Grace," Brent wished.

...

It had only been a day, but Brent truly couldn't bear it. He was not used to the current situation. The dark and silent house when he returned after a busy day at the company.

There was no Alyssa to welcome him. No warm hug and enthusiastic chatter from her, telling him everything she had experienced throughout the day without him. Only a suffocating emptiness.

Sitting on the living room sofa, Brent's gaze wandered around the room until it finally rested on the abstract painting on the wall.

"Ck! That painting should be replaced," Brent grumbled. Seeing the abstract painting made Brent feel even more foolish and pathetic. It was only now that he realized the painting shouldn't be there. Instead, a photo from his wedding with Alyssa should have occupied that spot.

Sighing in frustration, Brent leaned back on the sofa.

His eyes closed wearily.

"I miss you, Grace," he murmured sorrowfully.

No, Brent wasn't a weak person. He wasn't someone who enjoyed sitting back and surrendering to circumstances. He was used to taking action and doing his best to get what he wanted. So, if he wanted to see Alyssa and get her forgiveness, he needed to do something. That something was contacting Lewis to find out the exact address of the community service location where Alyssa was.

Now, Brent was sitting upright with his phone pressed to his right ear.

His face looked anxious as he waited for Lewis to answer his call. "Hello, Mrs. Lewis?" Brent greeted her as soon as she picked up.

"Hello, Mr. Brent. What's going on?"

"Sorry to disturb your rest, Mrs. Lewis. I need to meet my wife, Alyssa, urgently. So, I was hoping you could tell me the exact address of the community service location," Brent explained calmly.

His calm voice was in stark contrast to the irregular heartbeat in his chest and the chaos filling his mind.

"Alyssa? Oh, Mr. Brent, haven't you heard?" Lewis asked, surprised.

"Heard what, Mrs. Lewis?" Brent asked, equally puzzled.

"Alyssa resigned from the community service program, Mr. Brent. I'm currently in the process of finding her replacement," Lewis explained.

Thud!

What now? What new surprise had Brent just heard? Why did it seem like today God was enjoying playing tricks on him?

"What do you mean? My wife clearly told me her departure was moved up," Brent said, almost losing control.

On the other end, Lewis was clearly shocked and didn't expect what she had just heard from Brent. Alyssa was her colleague's wife? Brent's wife? Wasn't this surprising news? However, Lewis quickly composed herself.

"Sorry, Mr. Brent. But that's the truth. In fact, I have postponed the departure to find a replacement for Alyssa."

"Alright, thank you for the information, Mrs. Lewis," Brent said, his voice trembling.

After ending the call, Brent immediately tried to contact Alyssa. However, her phone was still off.

"Grace, where are you?" Brent said worriedly.

He paced back and forth like a restless tiger, his phone still pressed to his ear. While trying to call Alyssa, Brent also tried to guess where she might have gone.

"Excuse me, Mr. Brent! There's a package for you!"

Brent's activity was interrupted by a voice from outside his house. He quickly opened the door and saw a security guard who usually delivered packages to the house residents.

"Good evening, Mr. Brent."

"Good evening," Brent replied.

"Here's a package for you."

Brent received a large brown envelope. He thanked the guard and closed the door.

Brent's black eyes squinted when he saw the sender's name: Alyssa AsGracenita, his wife. The girl who had been occupying his thoughts and filling him with worry all day.

Eagerly and impatiently, Brent opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of A4 paper.

Brent began reading the lines of text at the top.

"Petition for Divorce."

Brent read the words with a voice that was almost breaking. His hands shook violently, especially when he saw his name listed as the defendant and his wife's name as the plaintiff. It felt as if the sky had just fallen.

Half-conscious, Brent diverted his remaining focus to the ringing phone on the coffee table. His wife's name was clearly displayed on the screen. He quickly grabbed the phone, brought it to his ear, and waited for the voice of the girl who had become the center of his world.

"Brent..." Alyssa's voice sounded hoarse. It seemed she had just been crying.

"Grace, what is..."

Brent couldn't finish his question.

"Let's separate, Brent."

"No! I will not let you go, Grace!" Brent shouted emotionally.

"But I want to be free from you, Brent."

"Grace... please..." Brent pleaded, his voice filled with anguish.

Tears unknowingly streamed down Brent's haggard face.

"I'm sorry, Brent. My decision is final. I want... us to end here."

To be continued...
