Chapter 4 Let's Live Together

"Excuse me, Officer Spencer, but do you know him?" Elyse asked with a slight frown on her face.

"Of course I do!" Officer Spencer replied excitedly. He smiled broadly at Elyse, whom he sought to please since he saw that she seemed to be acquainted with Adrian, and said, "Mr. Lambert is..."

"Oh my word, it's really you, Officer Spencer. It has been long since I last saw you!" Adrian abruptly cut in and wrapped an arm around Officer Spencer like he was an old pal.

Officer Spencer couldn't believe what was going on. His heart was nearly bursting with excitement. For someone as distinguished as Adrian to remember him, a small figure in society, he felt incredibly honored.

In reality, Adrian didn't remember who Officer Spencer was at all. He had simply acted the way he did so as to stop Officer Spencer from revealing who he really was to Elyse.

If Elyse became aware of who he really was, she might refuse to divorce him when it was time for her to do so! To Adrian, he couldn't imagine a scenario whereby a woman who was aware of his standing in society would willingly divorce him after getting married to him.

"If you don't mind, Officer Spencer, can I have a word with you in private?" Adrian asked Officer Spencer with the nicest voice he could muster.

"Of course, I don't mind," Officer Spencer replied enthusiastically.

With that, they both headed to a corner, shoulder to shoulder.

As she watched them walk away, Elyse frowned slightly, wondering how it was that Adrian knew Officer Spencer. But then, that was a good thing, right? It would be easy for them to solve the situation with the ruffian as quickly as possible.

Though she wasn't close to Adrian and didn't plan to have anything to do with him, she knew she would feel extremely guilty if he ended up in jail just for helping her.

Meanwhile, the ruffian was trembling with fear.

Surely, he was in deep trouble now. How was he going to defend himself against Officer Spencer and Adrian?

Swallowing hard, he began to walk away, hoping to slip away without getting caught by the other officers.

"Hey! Why are you leaving all of a sudden?" a police officer abruptly called out and grabbed his arm. "You can't leave until we clarify what really happened here."

"Well... I don't wish to pursue this case anymore, officer. Now that I think about it, I... I think I just fell accidentally instead. I'm so sorry for wasting you guys' time," the ruffian said sadly with his head down.

Hearing this, the police officer released the ruffian's arm and sighed. It was written all over the ruffian's face that he wanted nothing to do with the case because he was afraid of what Officer Spencer might do to him for troubling his friend, Adrian.

"Are you sure of what you're saying? If you drop the case, we'll let that man go," the officer said.

Sure, since Adrian and Officer Spencer knew each other, they'd see to it that Adrian escaped persecution. But then, it would take a lot of time and effort to achieve that. However, if the ruffian let go of the case, everything would be easily resolved.

"Yes! I'm dropping the case!" the ruffian said, reaffirming his position without hesitation.

At that moment, Adrian and Officer Spencer came back from their private talk, chatting and laughing heartily. They looked like they had been friends forever.

"You're a wonderful man, Mr. Lambert. The next time we meet, you should let me treat you to dinner," Officer Spencer said.

"I can't wait for such a day," Adrian replied with a chuckle.

The police who had stopped the ruffian approached Officer Spencer and said, "Jacob, the guy who reported this man has demanded that the case be closed."

"Oh, well, if that's the case, we are no longer needed here. Gather the others together and let's return to the station," Officer Spencer replied with a smile.

To him, his business at the market was done. Even though Adrian had hit the ruffian in front of him, he acted like that didn't happen. For all he cared, Adrian was free to do anything he wanted. Even if he broke the ruffian's leg, Officer Spencer wouldn't interfere.

But before he left, Officer Spencer glanced at Elyse again. She was an extremely lucky lady for her to have someone like Adrian as her husband. As a member of the Lambert family, her life would never taste hardship ever again.

However, he was quite confused as to why Adrian was keeping his real identity away from her. Was it his wish to experience poverty with her before he started to shower her with diamonds?

Officer Spencer couldn't help but let out a soft sigh. Rich people had a twisted understanding of what adventure was.

"Is it settled?" Elyse asked Adrian incredulously as she watched Officer Spencer march his team away while the ruffian sneaked into the crowd.

"Of course," Adrian replied with a shrug like what happened wasn't out of the ordinary.

Elyse narrowed her eyes and looked at Adrian suspiciously.

Seeing her reaction, Adrian panicked. After all his efforts, had she been able to figure him out nonetheless?

That should be impossible! He was a low-key individual who didn't plaster his picture everywhere. Amongst the general populace, he was mostly known by name only and had only been seen by a few.

The only reason Officer Spencer had been able to identify him was because he was in charge of the security of an event Adrian once attended and they met briefly.

"I'm just surprised that you're friends with someone as popular as Officer Spencer," Elyse said softly and finally relaxed her eyebrows.

Hearing this, Adrian let out a sigh of relief. His secret was still safe. "Well, I'm someone who makes friends with almost everyone I come across. And that's because one can never know who one's future savior would be," Adrian said.

Elyse scoffed and shook her head. Pushing Officer Spencer and the ruffian out of her mind, she asked, "Anyway, can I know why you came here in the first place?"

Adrian stopped smiling and replied with a firm voice, "I want us to live together."
