Chapter 2 Blood Moon Rising

In the first months after founding the Shadow Pack, Luna and her recruits faced serious hardship trying to establish their territory against hostile rivals. Food and shelter remained scarce even with Connor coordinating supply runs into the city.

Constant threats from Talia's pack also took their toll, as Border wolves would cross boundaries to pick violent fights intended to provoke and weaken the young upstarts.

Luna quickly had to master sophisticated battle techniques and enforcement of territory lines from her small band of fighters. She appointed trusted lieutenants Vance and Aria, fierce mated werewolves, to lead the risky border patrols.

One night the Border wolves cleverly drew the patrol into exposed terrain. They surrounded and savagely attacked Vance and Aria's team with triple their numbers, gravely injuring several Shadow wolves.

When Luna received the urgent call for backup, rage and anguish propelled her faster than she had ever run before. She arrived to find battered wolves clinging to life amid scattered blood trails and shredded clothing. No survivors remained to tell exactly what had transpired.

Luna tracked Vance's scent to a ravine where she discovered his broken body. Her shocked scream turned into an enraged howl heard for miles across the reserve's forests and rivers. It was answered by the eerie chorus of a dozen wolf voices from Talia's Inner Circle.

Hatred and suspicion now poisoned relations between the packs beyond repair. Open war was imminent.

Over the next two weeks Luna barely slept, consumed with plans for retaliation while also tending personally to her injured packmates. She posted rotating guards across their full territory, expecting an imminent major offensive.

Late one evening when Luna and Connor conferred privately, she caught his gaze lingering on ugly bruises and healing cuts on her face and arms.

Connor instinctively moved to gently cup her cheek with sadness in his eyes. "This crusade is destroying you, Luna. We can't go on like this forever."

She shook her head firmly. "The only way is forward now through strength and cunning greater than theirs. The Shadow Pack must withstand... or all is lost."

In her zeal she revealed plans to lead a stealth attack on the rival pack's headquarters to eliminate key threats. Concerned lines creased Connor's face at this news. He could not let Luna cross irrevocable lines, no matter the provocation. Love demanded another way...

Later that night Connor initiated secret contact with a childhood friend from Talia's pack to arrange a pivotal meeting. He waited anxiously at the heavily guarded border checkpoint, hoping desperately his message had been received.

Suddenly he picked up a faint rustling sound accompanied by his friend's familiar scent.

"Marcus! You came...thank the spirits." Connor warmly embraced the lean, dark gray wolf.

Marcus nodded grimly. "She will see no reason while enraged, but perhaps for you... What do you need of me, old friend?"

Connor's expression turned solemn. "A way to end this, so no more blood spills needlessly on either side..."

For hours they spoke in hushed tones, risking discovery. As dawn light peeked fatefully on the horizon, Connor secured a promise from Marcus to keep Luna safely away from headquarters long enough for Connor to attempt negotiations at the highest levels. All that remained was to signal Luna.

Heart pounding, Connor returned to find Luna preparing to depart with her attack squad. He planted himself firmly in their path.

"Let me pass, Connor! There is no dissuading me from this task," she asserted, eyes ablaze.

"No Luna... there is another way. Will you trust me?" He met her stare unwaveringly as her features softened a fraction at his tender tone.

She searched Connor's gaze with sudden uncertainty. Could she truly regain her humanity after unleashing such vengeance? Perhaps this man who had stayed by her side through all storms could show her light still worth seeing...

Luna finally stood down her advance patrol and grasped Connor's outstretched hand. "For you...I will try this other way of yours, my friend."

Conner led her deep into neutral woods before stopping in a quiet meadow. He turned to her, heart in his throat.

"Luna, what I do now is only to protect you from irreversible deeds. Please... forgive me."

In one swift motion he twisted a silver dagger from his belt and nicked her arm, the poisonous metal weakening her knees. Marcus emerged from the bushes in wolf form as she collapsed, catching her fall.

Connor choked back a sob as he brushed her hair softly from her paling face. "She will awaken safely far from here when it wears off. Guard her life with your own, I beg you! I must try to make things right..."

With that, he took off running hard for Talia's headquarters. Luna's life now hung in fateful balance between the two packs and Connor's longshot bid for peace.

Arriving breathless and unannounced, Connor demanded an audience with Talia herself. Laughing guards blocked his path, certain he was there as some patsysuicide assassin from Luna's rebel force.

As they roughly dragged him out, Connor cried out desperately.

"Talia! I hold your niece's life in my hands this day! Will you hear what I have to say?"

The bustling headquarters fell chillingly silent. An agonizing minute later, the grand double doors swung slowly open to reveal Talia standing tall, her hawk-like gaze fixed unerringly on Connor. She beckoned him forward...towards destiny's judgment seat.

Connor stood alone before Talia and her Inner Circle, keenly feeling the weight of countless wolf eyes boring into him. He had mere minutes to convince these powerful alphas not to execute him-and to call off their planned annihilation of Luna's rebel forces.

Squaring his shoulders, Connor pled his case: "Luna is young and headstrong, but her cause is just. She left because she envisions a pack where outcasts belong and prey never goes to waste. Where werewolves need not hide from humans, but coexist proudly."

He pressed on against deepening growls. "The Shadow Pack only fights in self-defense. Luna herself is ruled by ideals more than vengeance now. But continued assaults against them will provoke uglier retaliation."

Talia's sharp eyes flashed. "Pretty words cannot whitewash my wayward niece's treason. She betrayed her lineage and endangered the peace between man and wolf kind. There must be consequences..."

The alpha's chilling tone left no room for mercy. Connor's pulse raced as he played his final card:

"Peace has already been disrupted not by Luna, but by whoever viciously ambushed your wolves at the border two weeks ago! I have evidence one among you betrayed your own for savage purposes."

Chaos erupted as enraged alphas shouted accusations, demanding to know what "evidence." Talia raised her hand for silence, glare boring into the daring human before her.

"Explain this outrageous claim against my trusted Inner Circle, boy!"

Connor unveiled brutal security photos he had covertly obtained from Marcus depicting riled-up Inner Circle betas staging the border attack in disguise then covering their tracks. Talia confronted the exposed traitors where they stood.

"You mange-ridden dogs DARE savagely batter your own kinsmen? For what - to fuel hatred against the Shadow wolves?"

Their guilt was clear despite snarled denials. Connor pressed his advantage in the confusion.

"Luna need not be your enemy, but your reunited family-if you will it, Talia. What say you?"

The great alpha stared him down...then grinned.

"Blood loyalty runs deep in you, human who would brave an alpha's judgment for love. Release my niece and I will negotiate truce terms."

Relief washed over Connor. He hastily agreed before the opportunity vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Two days later, Connor and Marcus escorted weary Luna back into neutral woods near Talia's headquarters. Marcus supported his childhood friend as she slowly recovered from the metal poison while keeping her pacified and safely away.

When Connor appeared, Luna broke from Marcus and stormed toward him, fire in her eyes.

"Why did you betray me, brother?"

Before she could strike, Connor whispered urgently, "Peace has been brokered, Luna! Talia calls for parley under the full moon. Isn't this what we always dreamed?"

Luna searched his gaze, tentative hope dawning.

Marcus stepped forward. "It's true! Connor convinced my alpha you are worth saving. He did all this for you... almost died to sway her heart."

Luna stood speechless, her anger crumbling. She turned back to Connor, seeing him with new eyes. No longer just her supportive friend, but courageous savior who dared risk everything to redeem her soul. She pulled him into a crushing embrace.

"Can you forgive me?" He murmured against her hair.

She leaned back, raising his chin to meet her intense gaze, conveying wordless understanding through her shimmering wolf eyes.

Howls sounded close by - it was time. Luna straightened proudly as Talia strode into view, flanked by her highest betas. The Shadow Pack alpha had come to negotiate peace and seek reconciliation.

The full moon witnessed two proud alphas overlooking their packs, no longer divided by hatred but drawn together by loyalty, justice and hope. Much would depend on choices made under its glow this pivotal night...
