A soldier asked Lion where he was taking her while strapping Sunny to a jeep.
"She needs help, captain's order."When Sunny heard Lion's voice, she thought it was real and almost opened her eyes to confirm. But she couldn't risk a disappointment so it was better to let her mind busk in the false sense of rescue. She let his voice be the music that sent her off.
"Lion."Sunny called in her subconscious.A blast that sounded miles away followed as the jeep started and sped out of the camp.
Then followed a wetness that pooled under her seat and feet.
"My baby..."Sunny groaned still unconscious.
"Damn it!I thought you weren't due until next month."
Again,Lion spoke.Sunny slowly flattered her eyes open as the wind blew on her face.
She didn't know what upset her more, the fact that she was in labor or that Lion had proven her wrong and actually came for her.He was right beside her driving the jeep. His face was serene,if such a word could be used to describe a human.
"Try to relax,I'll get you to safety.Sorry I took so long to find you."
Lion stretched his left hand to her and locked it with her's.Sunny looked up from their locked fingers to his face.Lion was worried for her...or the baby.Either way he came for her and that was what mattered. And he had been searching for her.And he knew when she was due.
He was so focused on getting her to safety.Sunny downplayed the contractions around her belly and back for a while till she couldn't hold it in anymore. It was a bumpy ride that made the situation worse.
"How much longer?I can't hold it in anymore."Lion turned his attention on her when she spoke then back to the road.
"There is a stop about three kilometers away. We'll buy what we need for birth.Hang in there."He tightened his hold on their joined fingers. The simple gesture was touching and made Sunny not think Lion a monster for a second.
"Lion...I'm so tired ,and hurt. Please let me go home."Sunny was being delirious again. The consecutive contractions kept her up and she felt the urge to push. The need to be in sync with her uterine walls was strong.
"Try breathing in and out slowly."Lion instructed pretty much unsure of how to help her.
His voice was a nice distraction. And he was quite nice to talk to when he wasn't trying his hardest to be a criminal."I'm sorry for getting you into all this mess."
"It's partly my fault.I promise I'll forgive and forget everything if you let me go.Just take me upto the border and I'll find my way from there."Lion responded to that by freeing Sunny's hand and speeding off.She couldn't read his expression well.No one had come after them so far which was a good sign.
A moment later Lion drove into a gas station with an attached utility shop. The place looked deserted and Sunny would have given anything to know their location but she didn't dare ask.
Lion jumped out of the jeep and jogged into the shop.He came out with a small carrier bag and a packet of energy drink cans.He didn't say a word as he sped off again.
"Stop the car."Sunny requested after Lion drove for a good thirty minutes.
Sunny wasn't unfamiliar with the art of producing a life, she had watched plenty of soap operas. From her limited experience, she couldn't go on another second. She was close.
Lion must have been thinking the same thing because he was on her side unstrapping her.He parked at the road side and retrieved a mat from the back and spread it down.
Sunny's worn out dress rode up in the process.Lion caught a glimpse of the fresh cuts spelling his name. His hand hovered over it and Sunny's mind flashed back to the day he deflowered her.
He had been both drunk and pissed about something which made fighting him impossible. And he had also ignited a flame in her that she'd thought impossible for another man other than Josef to light.
"What do you want me to do?"Lion asked forcing her back to the moment. She was in labor but had no strength to show how much it hurt.
"Stand guard or something?"Sunny couldn't risk she devil walking in on her giving birth.Lion stood up and as usual,he had a pistol ready. Was he never unarmored?
Sunny closed her eyes briefly to focus her thoughts on the task at hand.Lion was on guard checking their surrounding.
"Breathe in..."She breathed then counted to ten before pushing with all her might. She could feel her baby closer. The second push earned her baby's head .She repeated breath in, counting to ten then pushing two more times but nothing happened.
Lion showed up then...right on time.
"I think the baby is stuck."Sunny breathed doing her best not to pass out."Lion, please save him."He looked nervous and anxious, like an expectant father. He dropped to his knees between Sunny's legs and took of his jacket.
"You can do this.Just breathe and give me a good push...In three,two..."Sunny beamed in Lion's encouraging words then focused on his emerald green eyes. She used the only feelings she had in her to fuel her.Anger and pain. She recalled how she devil had tortured her not minding her condition. She balled up the pain of Josef not finding her and used it to drive herself.
She finished with a sob as she heard her baby cry.Her baby...
"It's a boy!"Lion sounded excited, how a new father is supposed to be.He moved to kneel beside her and supported her up.He held the baby boy in his jacket.
"My baby..."Sunny sighed too overwhelmed and weak to hold the tiny bundle of joy.Her baby made the day look brighter.
"It's our baby."Lion corrected cuddling her.."I know you have a man waiting for you in America but I don't want you to ever forget me."Sunny thought his request wouldn't be a problem considering she had his name graffiti on her thigh.
Sunny knew he had seen it,she devil strategically put it on the upper side.
But she still wanted to tell him every ordeal she went through if not for revenge,to get it out of her system. She looked up into his emerald eyes but before she said anything,Lion leaned in and gently kissed her dry lips. The kiss's warmth travelled from her lips absorbing into her bloodstream and instantly spread through out her body. Then she fell into total blankness.
