Chapter 5 Assuming The Worst Of Her Intentions

As soon as the words left her mouth, Lena found herself unable to hold back her tears.

Despite being the one who had lashed out, she was the one left feeling distressed and tearful.

Suddenly, the elevator was summoned to another floor, and the doors began to open. Seizing the moment, Lena sharply kicked Collin in the shin with her high heel and quickly escaped, leaving a crowd of stunned onlookers outside the elevator.

Thirty minutes later, Lena arrived at the hospital, limping as she exited the taxi.

The hospital was bustling, even at this late hour. The sound of ambulance sirens filled the air. Lena met Sandra Reed, at the entrance to her grandmother's ward. Sandra had just finished a surgery.

"Lena, what happened to your leg?" Sandra asked, approaching Lena to give her some assistance.

"I injured it kicking a jerk," Lena replied, half-wondering if Collin's leg was made of steel. The pain in her toe was still sharp.

Sandra frowned at her and said, "Why were you so impulsive?"

Lena found herself at a loss for words.

"Let's go to my office; I'll take a look at it," Sandra suggested.

"My grandmother..." Lena started, more concerned about her grandmother's condition.

"She's stable for now. You can visit her in a bit," said Sandra.

Together, they headed to Sandra's office.

Once Lena removed her shoe, she saw a bruise beneath her big toenail. Fortunately, there was no bone damage. Sandra applied some ointment and provided basic treatment, and then offered Lena a pair of her own slippers. "Stay off high heels until this heals."

Lena nodded in agreement.

Sandra glanced at the high heels, her expression turning serious. "I need to talk to you about something. I was going to call you tomorrow."

"Is it about my grandma?" Lena asked, worried it might be bad news regarding her grandmother's health.

"No," Sandra replied, shaking her head. She retrieved a report from her office drawer. "Here are the results from your check-up the day before yesterday."

Lena had been experiencing stomach discomfort for a while. Two days ago, Sandra had found her retching in the bathroom during a visit to her grandmother and insisted on a medical examination.

"You look serious. It's not a terminal illness, is it?" Lena attempted to lighten the mood as she accepted the medical report.

She began to read through it.

Lena had undergone several tests that day, but she hadn't been overly concerned about the details, having been ushered from one examination room to another by Sandra.

The initial pages indicated that her overall health data was normal, apart from some signs of malnutrition.

Afterwards, she flipped to the final page.

Upon seeing it, she was stunned.

Seconds went by in the blink of an eye.

It took her nearly two minutes before regaining her composure. Acting on impulse, she flung the papers aside. "What is this? This result must be a mistake! I took a birth control pill!"

The revelation on the report was more shocking to Lena than any dire diagnosis.

She was four weeks pregnant?

How was it possible that she was pregnant?

Lena felt a sudden rush of blood to her head, yet her face grew ashen, even paler than the paper in her hand. She scrutinized Sandra's expression, searching for any sign that this might be a joke.

"Lena, you need to remember that birth control pills aren't 100% effective," Sandra explained.

Sandra didn't mention that she had actually received the test results on the same day they were processed. She had delayed telling Lena because she had asked a colleague to verify the results twice for accuracy.

This meant that the test results were unequivocal.

Lena was indeed pregnant, and the father was the uncle of her ex-boyfriend!

Images of Collin's distant and imposing demeanor flashed through her mind, especially their recent encounter in the elevator. If he were to learn of the pregnancy, he would likely assume the worst of her intentions.
