Chapter 3 You Were Supposed to be My Secretary

Nancy's POV

I turned to the interviewers who were as astonished as I was.

' Congrats Ms. Nancy, you can resume tomorrow ' The man at the middle said stretching his hand towards me.

' Thank you sir' ' I quickly took the hand he offered, then took my gaze to the woman and the other man. With a slight nod at all three of them, I picked my files, stood up and headed out. As I walked down the staircase, I couldn't contain the joy I felt, at that moment I wished I had like a kind of super power, so I could teleport home and tell my aunt about the job. I giggled as I thought of how happy she would be.

When I got to the reception, the girl was still on her sit, with her eyes glued to the laptop.

' I got the job ' I beamed, that caught her attention, cause she raised her head up and looked at me... taken aback.

' Huh? '

' I got the job ' I repeated, grinning from ear to ear.

' Oh my God! Ma'am! Congrats ' She beamed.

' Thank you Anastasia ' I called her name for the first time.

' You're welcome, so when are we seeing you? ' She asked.

' Tomorrow... I'd resume tomorrow '

' Okay then, see you tomorrow '

' Yeah ' I replied with a smile.

After saying our goodbyes, I left the company, took a cab and headed home. When I got home, my aunt wasn't in, so I just used my spare key and got in.

I went straight to my room, I really need to take my bath right now, so I did just that. After taking my bath, I wore a light cloth, then went to the kitchen. As if my stomach had sensed I was in the kitchen, I let out a wide yawn, gosh! I'm so hungry. I looked around trying to find something to eat, then my eyes fell on a covered plate on the small table in the kitchen.

I went to where it was, then uncovered the plate and oh! God bless my aunt, she had left my share of the breakfast, we were supposed to eat together. I scooped some and put it in my mouth.

Mhmmm... I closed my eyes as I savoured the taste, my aunt is such a good cook.

When I was done eating, I washed the dishes and went back to my room. I laid facing up on my bed, then I reflected on all that had happened today. Finally I have a job, after all the endless job hunts which resulted in failure, I finally have job! I thought with a smile. To be honest, I never thought I was going to get it, after what I had said to the cute guy, but he came out of nowhere and did wonders.

Seriously, that guy was dope, if not for the fact that I ain't into love and all these dating shit, he would make a fine boyfriend. I laid that way for a while as different thoughts ran through my mind. After a while, a knock came on the main door.

' That must be aunt ' I muttered, as I sprang up from my bed and rushed to the door.

I just wanted to tell her about it.

As soon as I opened the door, I jumped on her.

' Hey! Nancy! ' She called out of surprise.

I ignored her and just snuggled more into the hug.

' Look I know you miss me, but you have to release me now, my back is aching ' She said the last part, faking a wince. I pulled out of the hug, she looked at me like I had gone nuts.

' Aunt, you won't believe what happened today ' I said as I collected the plastic bag she was holding and paved way for her to come in.

' Hope it's good news ' I saw her roll her eyes.

I dropped the plastic bag on the floor, then stood before her and placed my hands on her shoulders. Her face was saying she was lost.

' I got the job!' I squealed.

She gasped and placed a hand over her mouth, looking at me with wide eyes. I was just smiling at her, as I watched her expression. Then she brought her hand down and asked

' You got the job? '

' Yes, aunt' I chuckled, nodding my head vigorously as well.

' Oh my God! I'm so proud of you ' She pulled me into a hug.

'My darling ' She cooed, as she patted my back.

After few heartbeats, we pulled out of the hug, then she gently placed her two hands on my cheeks, holding them delicately.

' I knew you could do it ' She beamed, I could see her eyes glistened with tears.

Not again... I knew what was coming.

She pulled away and went to sit on the only couch we had, I went to sit beside her and placed an arm round her shoulders.

' If only Laura was here, she would have been so happy ' She sniffed, as she stared into space, I sighed as I watched her.

' I know aunt and that's why we both have to be strong and happy, so that mom will be happy too wherever she is' I said softly and wiped her tears, trying to comfort her, even though I was on the verge of crying

She sniffed and brought her gaze back to me.

' Yes, we will ' She said with a dry smile.

'Okay!' I stood up and dragged her lightly along with me.

' Enough of the sad mood, let's make dinner, I'm really hungry '

' Glutton ' She teased, making me laugh.

We made dinner together and ate, we talked for a while after I had washed the dishes. When it was getting a little late, we both retired to our rooms.

As soon as I shut the door behind me, I sat on the floor, resting my back against the door. Then I bursted into tears, I covered my mouth with my hands as I cried silently. I didn't want to cry earlier, when my aunt had mentioned my mom. Trust me it was difficult, as I tried not to cry.

I felt like my heart was been squeezed, as I recalled all my mom had to experience, what my good for nothing father did to her, which resulted to her death. I had vowed never to have anything to do with him.

If only she was here with me...

If only she was here with me, to pull me into her warm embrace and tell me how I made her proud.

I really do miss her.

I cried for few more minutes, then I freshened up and retired to bed, tomorrow is my first day and I wouldn't want to screw things up, like I almost did today.

NEXT DAY

' Bye aunt ' I said as I kissed my aunt goodbye.

' Bye, take care of yourself, make sure you get something for lunch, okay?' She said giving me a ' I know you ' look.

' Chill aunt, I will ' I chuckled, raising both my hands in surrender.

' Better '

I smiled with a shake of my head.

' Okay see you later aunt ' I said as I headed out.

' Love you ' I heard her say.

' Love you too ' I said loud enough for her to hear me.

I took a cab and told the cab man where I was going, when we got to the company, I paid him and came out. I stood and looked up at the huge building before me, then prayed silently.

' Lord please let this job bring me nothing but goodness '.

With that, I walked in through the gate, which the security man had opened for me, I walked towards the main building, got in and as expected Anastasia was already in her position, but this time she was talking with a lady.

They both turned to my direction as soon as they sensed my presence.

' woooh!! Look who is here ' Anastasia squealed.

' Good morning ' I greeted with a smile as I got to where they were.

' Oops! my bad, good morning ma'am' She greeted back.

' Morning ' I directed at the other lady.

' Morning ma'am' she greeted, with a smile. I couldn't help but smile at how beautiful her smile was.

' Uhm... so, how do I locate my office? ' I asked, turning to Anastasia.

' Let me quickly make a call, you can sit over there ' She said, gesturing to a sit across the room, then she picked up the office phone.

When she was done with the call, not long a young guy showed up. Anastasia told him to direct me to my office, then we left together. We got to an open office, consisting of other workers.

' Attention guys! ' He called out, they turned to look at us.

' This is Ms. West the new accountant ' He added.

' Hi good morning ' I greeted making sure to bring out my warmest smile.

Some replied my greetings, while others just went back to what they were doing. Then a girl walked up to me, making me raise a brow.

' You're welcome, ma'am ' She beamed, revealing her pretty teeth.

' Thank you ' I smiled.

' Chloe can you take her to her office please?' The guy said.

' Sure, I'd love to '

Okay, she's nice.

' I'd be going ' He said and left.

' Let's go ' She said, then I followed her. As we walked past the other workers, I saw they were staring and murmuring things I wish I could hear. Well, I can't let anyone spoil my day, I thought as I ignored them.

' I'm Chloe by the way ' The girl said, cutting through my thoughts.

' I know that ' I chuckled.

' Oh ' She mouthed.

' Just ignore them, okay?'

' Huh?'

' I know you know they are talking about you ' She added.

How did she know I was thinking about that?

' Just ignore them, they are actually nice though ' She said, this time we were walking through a hallway .

' I wasn't planning to worry over that ' I defended, then she chuckled.

' We're here ' She said as we got to a door.

' This is your office '

' Um... okay, thank you '

' If you need anything, I'm just down the hall ' She said with a wink.

I nodded with smile, then she left. I opened the door and entered.

Wow! The office was so big and neatly arranged and I had it all to myself! I giggled and rushed to the office chair, then sat on it and swiveled it.

This feels so good, I thought.

Nancy enough of this, you need to get to work. With that, I strengthened up and began checking through the files on the table. I need to know what the previous accountant had been doing.

I was way into them, reading already when all of a sudden the door sprang open.

' Don't you know ho...' I began ready to scold whoever it was, then my mouth hung open when I saw him.

you know who, he looked all handsome and dashing in his black suit, which fitted his body perfectly.

' What are you doing here?' He asked as he walked to my table, I could see his jaw tightened.

' Uhm... I... I don't understand' I found myself stuttering.

' You were supposed to be my fucking secretary, not the accountant ' He huffed, at that moment I heard a loud bang in my head.
