Chapter 9 I couldn't compete

I told her I was going to sleep in the sitting room, but she refused and said she couldn't sleep in her room alone. I agreed to sleep on the floor while she sleeps on the bed. She said okay. I was surprised at how she readily agreed to that. That was when I knew she didn't have any plans and that I was safe. We both didn't sleep early and talked about funny moments we've both had these past few years. We talked for minutes before I slept off. I slept peacefully, knowing nothing would happen, but it was a lie. I never knew it was a trap.

Sophie's POV

I've been trying to sleep, but I couldn't. I've been having thoughts on how I was going to tell Greg about traveling next week. I wasn't worried about that alone; I was worried about how he was doing. I haven't stopped sending texts to him. I've been apologizing over what I said and how it wouldn't happen again. He has been reading them but hasn't replied. I was really happy that he was reading them. At least he knows I'm really sorry, and it's a sign he's alive and doing well somewhere.

As I was in my thoughts, my phone rang, and it was my mother. Why was she calling by this time of the night? I immediately picked up.

"Mom, good evening," I said.

"Sophie, how are you doing?"

"Fine, mom. Hope all is well?"

"All is well, my dear. I just called to hear from you. How's your husband?" She asked.

"All is well, mom. My husband is well."

"Alright, my regards to him. Take care of yourself," she said.

"How's Dad?" I asked.

"He's doing well," she said.

We talked about a few things before she ended the call. After the call, I had an urge to call Greg, maybe, just maybe he'd pick my call. Before I called, I planned on what I was going to say if he picks up.

"Good evening, sir. I'm sorry about the last time; it wouldn't happen again."

No, it sounds weird.

"Could you please come back home, sir?"

No, that sounds desperate. I don't want him to think I'm desperate to meet him.

"Sir, I have an important thing I want to tell you; could you come to the house tomorrow?"

Arghh... It still sounds weird. As I was contemplating on what I would say if he were to pick up my call, another thought just crossed my mind.

What if he was with Rose? What if he was having a nice time with Rose? I wouldn't want to disturb them, right? And it was midnight already. I went online and searched about Rose. What I saw made me feel somehow. She's from an influential family, and she was really doing better herself. She has her own company, and her net worth was millions of dollars. I saw a picture of Rose and Greg together. She seemed to be his main girlfriend to everyone. They had several pictures of them taken together. I typed Greg Williams on the search bar to even know whom I'm married to. What I saw shocked me.

Now I see why he asked me to call him sir. I didn't know he was this rich. His company is one of the biggest in the country. That was even his own; the business Williams company was there. I see why he's always busy. Having to manage such big companies was time-consuming. He even has branches in more than 10 countries, including Bellaris country. And then I realized something; we are not on the same level at all. I don't even have anything to my name. It would take me my lifetime to even have 10% of his wealth. I saw news of celebrities he had been with over the years, and I was wowed. I looked at myself and knew I couldn't compare. I looked at my closet and saw my clothes and everything I owned; I realized it was nothing. I vowed to just remain in my lane and never be in his business. I'm not going to say anything about his relationships; he should do whatever he likes. Going to the university to improve my life was the most important to me right now. But still, I needed to let him know I'd be traveling to avoid further problems. So I decided to try my luck and call him. I dialed his line; it rang three times before he finally picked.

"Hello," I heard his hoarse voice from the other line. I kept quiet for a few seconds, before I could reply, I hear a female's voice from his end.

"Greg... Greg..." she moaned his name softly.
