"Your face reveals what you want to say."
...He guessed my thoughts again.
I focused on eating my breakfast, no longer having the energy to wonder why this man seemed more lively today than a few days ago. Indeed, using the brain too much is not for me!
After finishing breakfast, I cleaned up my eating area. Glancing at the man, I saw him eating with the utmost nobility.
Me:... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh, but you in a sleeveless shirt and shorts, messy hair, no matter how elegantly you eat, you look like a scruffy ball swallowing soap.
I hesitantly asked him, "Do you really not want to cut your hair?" Or do you know your good looks and decide to hide them so as not to make women fall for you? I really didn't think he would be so self-sacrificing for the world.
He looked up, his eyes hidden, but I guessed he was glancing at me: "No need."
Alright, another rejection.
I really shouldn't meddle in others' affairs. I gave him an OK sign and took my backpack. I didn't want to be late for work! My dark company would dock my salary for tardiness!
I had no idea that this nominal husband of mine would also leave shortly after I left our apartment.
...
Dream Blue is the company where I currently work. Luckily, I arrived on time, but the atmosphere seemed strange today.
After observing my colleagues, I noticed the same familiar looks - disdain, mockery, condescension. Previously, they would sneak glances at me and talk behind my back; this time, they openly showed their ugliness without hiding it.
As if they knew I was a perpetual failure who could never rise up, and even if they mocked me, I couldn't do anything to them.
I had a vague idea why they were acting this way.
"Alice! Great, you're here. Help me out. Nobody believes I got married!" Mia's familiar whiny voice rang out, and a figure rushed over, grabbing my hand and pulling me forward. No one else but Mia.
"Lily! I'm serious, ask Alice, she even brought her fiancé to dinner with me last night!" Mia's angry but teasing words made everyone laugh out loud, and the girl opposite us patted Mia's head as if comforting a child angry at being disbelieved. Then the girl gave me a sharp look, her height around 1.7 meters, wearing tight clothes that accentuated her attractive figure, and her short hair adding to her personality. All of her physical advantages were unrelated to the gentle-sounding name Lily.
"Not everyone is as honest as you." She said to Mia, glancing at me, obviously implying that I was lying. Lily and Mia were close friends and the two most beautiful women in the company. So, the rest of the employees followed them like ants to honey. This also indicated that whatever they said, their followers believed without question.
Obviously, the initial contemptuous looks from everyone were controlled by these two beauties.
The truth is, this company is a mess of stories. Both Mia and Richard work here. They are a perfect couple in everyone's eyes, and I'm an ugly earthworm interrupting them. I don't know when the rumor started that Mia and Richard were mutually in love. They were a match made in heaven, perfect in every way... but I forced Richard's family to agree to our marriage using my death. Even someone said I intentionally hurt myself so Richard would feel guilty and Mia tormented. Thus, they couldn't be together.
When I heard this story, I honestly shed a few tears of fake emotion.
Did I really have the opportunity to do so many pointless things?
But it's easy to guess who spread the rumor. And the male protagonist of the story also enjoyed this content, using people's misunderstandings to isolate me, then appearing like a god to save me.
His terrible character has always been the same.
Yet, I still became his tail, shamelessly clinging to what I call my disgusting love.
Once, someone asked me if I knew what shame was. I laughed. What could shame do compared to my goals?
As long as these foolish people touch my limits, I don't care what they do, even if they insult me.
Returning to the office with Mia's excuses, she playfully reproached me: "Alice, you're too timid! Why didn't you tell everyone so they could share your joy?"
Then, as if thinking of something, she clapped her hands and excitedly grabbed mine: "Right! How about we organize a debut party tonight after work?" She turned and smiled joyfully at her friend: "Then you'll surely believe me!"
Lily shrugged, indicating indifference. The others around maintained their spectator stance, occasionally chuckling.
Mia tilted her head adorably towards me: "Today, Richard got promoted, let's celebrate with him!"
As soon as she finished, there was a buzz of discussion. It seemed the main character of this play was more favored. Well, it made sense, since Richard was our boss and a hot boy. Compared to his promotion and my affairs, he was still more interesting.
I saw Mia's gleaming, eager eyes, and my mouth curved into a slight smile: "Sure."
Things were progressing as planned.
...
After a long day at work, I prepared to head home. Then Mia, affectionately holding my hand, reminded me: "Don't forget the party, I've sent the address in the group. You won't get lost!"
Look at her, eagerly wanting to see me embarrassed, even preemptively making excuses.
I nodded in acknowledgment. Turning away, I caught Mia's cunning smile. Surely she was planning something to trick me. But... who cares.
Back home, I found Alan leisurely sitting on the sofa reading a book. This scene would be nicer without his messy hair and shabby clothes. I really wanted to give him a makeover, not to show off, but just so I wouldn't have to endure such dreadful sights every day!
"Get ready, we're going to a party with everyone." I told him and went to change.
"Corporate employees, huh? Parties every day," I heard him say, his sarcasm unmistakable. I could only sigh:
"Just bear with it, Richard got promoted, everyone's happy." I chose a long-sleeved grey dress. Outdated for today's youth, but I didn't care much, having something to wear was good enough.
"It's that guy from yesterday."
"Right, a chance to introduce him to everyone." I pinned up my long hair and quickly did my makeup.
After finishing, I sprayed some old perfume and went out. When I opened the door, I was startled by the disheveled man looming close.
"Ah!"
Sorry! Even knowing who it was, suddenly encountering that horrific appearance could cause a heart attack!
"What are you doing?" I pushed him slightly away and closed the door.
He didn't answer, so I looked back and noticed he hadn't changed. Then I remembered... he only had one suit for meeting Richard's family and my parents.
I told him to prepare clothes, but he had none suitable. I didn't even remember to properly shop for his daily wear. The clothes he wore seemed to be all he had.
I sighed in regret, took out a shirt and pants from the suit for him to wear temporarily. At least it wouldn't be the same outfit.
"Temporarily wear this, I'll take you shopping tomorrow after work."
I saw him quietly change without complaints. God, my guilt was growing by the day!
