Chapter 3 3 - Melody

I saw his lip twitch for a moment and almost asked why but decided saying nothing was probably the safer option instead. After a second he slowly lifted his brow, watching my excitement before finally speaking once more. "Not really? I mean I guess it does. It's just habit now that I don't pay too much attention to how it feels."

"It's child's play, what I just did. Ah..." His eyes moved towards his hand where he focused, a yellow orb slowly starting to form. "I can do more with my magic....You can touch it, if you want."

I blinked my eyes a few times at his words, tilting my head some as I watched his hand start to form an orb. It made me think of a giant firefly or that thing from that one game I saw someone playing once... I think it was supposed to be a fairy? But it looked like a firefly too in a weird way. Reaching my hand out to touch it I jumped slightly when it burst into a swarm of fireflies instead.

"Woah!" I watched as the flew around, cupping one in my hand and staring at it.

I didn't see them much anymore but as a kid they used to be everywhere. I used to catch them and show Magenta... I frowned a little as I stared at it, thinking about her. She was ok somewhere, she had to be. I'd find her eventually. I just had to manage on my own a little while before I could find her again that was all. Maybe then I could tell her about this guy and have him show her too, it'd be fun. I hoped.

"I'm almost jealous you can do that." I said after a minute looking up at him. "You get all the cool stuff, not fair."

"Thanks. It's not always what it's cracked up to be but I manage."

Glancing back at the small firefly in my hand once more before letting it go, my eyes shifted back towards him watching as he pulled out his phone. He barely had it in hand for a few seconds before I heard footsteps and looked over to see Satan.

"Am I...interrupting something?" He asked aloud, looking between the two of us and lifting his brow.

"Nope." I glanced back at the man as he spoke, "It was nice talking to you."

I peered at Satan, blinking a few times before biting my lower lip and shaking my head. I didn't want to bother him any, he had enough on his plate. It was like I'd gone mute though, looking towards the other guy I nodded my head slowly before backing up some. I didn't want to bother anyone and Satan was the busy kind, so it was probably best if I just left now. That was what I was telling myself.

"Ah, it was... nice talking to you too." I said all too quickly before pointing away, "I uhm, have to get ready for work anyway."

Did I want to leave? No. I didn't want to at all. Did I feel like I had a choice? Also no. Because if I stayed I'd probably bother Satan and then that would be bad for everyone involved. Lifting my hand I bit down on the nail of my thumb as my thoughts seemed to envelope me and I started walking quickly back towards my house, my bare feet crunching down on the grass and leaves as I passed it.

I did need to get to work though, it was getting late and if I was late I'd probably get fired. Stopping when I saw a note on my door though, I snatched it and opened it, reading over it quickly. I'd been invited to the Masqurede ball because we'd been invited prior to... everything. The Elders were still giving us a chance it said, and when I read the last line over again I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes.

I shouldn't have been shocked by the fact that I got this by any means. It was the big ball that was coming up soon and on top of that I was the child of one of the strongest Alpha's anyone had seen in years but it didn't make this any less annoying or gross. It was a chance to "find an alpha to settle down with" to help "preserve your families legacy.". God I hated it around here sometimes.

Nothing needed to be preserved, our family legacy was still ours and it was going to continue to be ours regardless of what happened out there. The Elders though, they never saw it that way. Just like how they couldn't stomach the idea of a female alpha or the idea of mating to anyone but another wolf. Amelia had been and done both and sometimes I had to wonder if they weren't secretly cheering because she was missing.

I really did miss her, more than anyone in this pack.

Crumbling up the note, I tossed it behind me and went to my room. Maybe I'd go. Not because of the Elders wanting me to go but because I needed to get out, I needed to see if I could maybe find my sister and also that small part of me that was always curious as to what these things were like. As it were, I had never had a chance to get to go to anything like this before but Magenta did.

Plus it wasn't like I'd just magically find my mate at this thing, if no one could stand me now, why would that change then?

For just a second though, my mind drifted back to the man I'd been speaking with. He was nice, and cute. I was still fascinated by what he was, but I couldn't deny the part of me that was attracted to him. He was pretty and though he seemed standoff-ish, he proved that under that he was actually an extremely nice guy.

"Nope." I muttered to myself as I changed my clothes, "Not Satan's Beta, Melody... why would you even think that..."

Clearing my mind I looked myself over in my mirror after a few minutes, turning this way and that before I smiled some. I looked good, at least I thought so. My boss always agreed and the way people kept coming in to see me? Well I had to take that as doing something right at the very least. Gathering the rest of what I needed, I put my dress in a bag and started for the door. I could go, work and then come home and sleep and work on some song writing tomorrow.

It was probably the only way I was going to be able to get some new material that didn't feel absolutely forced and it was well past time for me to get even one new song out there. I was sure people were getting tired of hearing the same old songs and covers done repeatedly by me. I needed to show them that I was able to create my own music without needing help from anyone because that was what was truly worth something.
