Chapter 5 The scheme

After 9 months, Kachi gave birth to a baby boy. Peter's joy knew no bound. He made a promise to Kachi that he was going to work harder in order to make money, so he would legally marry her and claim his child.

"Kachi, your mother is here to see you" Onyinye announced to Kachi.

"Onyinye, I have told you countless times that I don't have a mother" Kachi snapped and continued dressing Gozie, her son.

Since she left her father's house, she cut off all ties between her parents and herself. As long as she's concerned, she's legally an orphan.

She never expected them to throw her out. She understands that they were disappointed, every parent should be;but then that shouldn't have made them throw her out.

Mazi Okezie and his wife especially, are remorseful. Oriaku felt she should have done something to make her daughter stay. She drowned herself in the river of guilt.

Onyinye sat beside Kachi who was now feeding her son and held her hands. She understands the girl's pain.

"let me go" Kachi yanked off her hands.

"Kachi, Gozie is all dressed now" Onyinye said.

"I believe you are not blind" Kachi rolled her eyes at Onyinye.

"yes. I am not. I see clearly what you are doing" Kachi replied. What she did was meant to be a joke but clearly, Kachi is not in the mood.

Both ladies sat down in silence. Kachi tried to hide the tears.

"I don't want to see her" Kachi broke the silence. The tears were now threatening to fall.

"I know. But she's still your mother" Onyinye replied. "for God's sake Kachi, she's remorseful now"

"because I gave birth to a boy?" Kachi snapped, startling little Gozie.

"see? now he's crying..." Onyinye collected the boy from his mother and tried to console him.

After some time, Gozie stopped crying and dozed off. Onyinye gently laid him down on the bed.

"you might be right, Kachi but that doesn't change the fact that she's your mother and she's remorseful now" Onyinye whined. While Kachi rolled her eyes.

"besides you need someone to press down this big tummy of yours" Onyinye pointed to Kachi's stomach.

"then what are you here for?" Kachi asked.

"look, I am not a midwife, nor am I a mother so I don't know how to do that" Onyinye stated.

"I know." Was all Kachi could say. Her friend was right. But then she thought of her father's hateful words and how her mother personally took her belongings alongside herself to Peter's house, despite her pleas.

Though that was on her father's instruction, those moments still hurt her and wasn't willing to let go, at least not yet.

Kachi managed to go outside and meet with her mother after Onyinye's persuasion. She glared at her mother.

"what do you want?" Kachi asked frantically.

"and how did you know I was here?" she added.

"oh Kachi my daughter..." Oriaku whimpered.

"first of all, I am not your daughter, secondly, what are you doing here?" Kachi scorned.

"please my daughter, forgive your mother, biko" Oriaku pleaded,with tears pouring down her cheeks like rain fall.

Kachi scoffed "daughter? Did I hear you say daughter?" Oriaku nodded desperately.

"aren't you my daughter?" She asked.

"you are soooo shameless. For coming here, calling me your daughter and begging fit my forgiveness, you have no iota of shame left in you" Kachi retorted.

"what happened to the daughter that made you a laughing stock and a topic for discussion!!!" Kachi flared up. She couldn't contain her anger.

"what happened to the daughter that brought disgrace upon you? Tell me! What happened to her!!!!" she whimpered.

"Kachi please...your father and I are sorry. We truly regret our actions, biko" Oriaku besesched.

"why?because I bore a son? Would have regretted your actions if he was a girl?" Kachi let out a maniac laughter.

Meanwhile Onyinye was having fun while watching both mother and child display what she called stupidity.

"now is the right time to set my plans in motion" She said to herself.

Onyinye ran out of the house and approached Kachi and her mother. She asked Oriaku to leave, promising to talk sense into Kachi's head.

"thank you my daughter" Oriaku said to Onyinye and took her leave.

"no thank you for making my plan an easy one" Onyinye let out an evil smirk.

"good riddance to bad Rubbish" She added. She turned to Kachi after replacing her evil smirk with a sympathetic smile.

"Kachi that was rude. Why would you talk to your mother in that manner?" Onyinye said sternly as she walked up to Kachi.

"you told her I was here, didn't you?" Kachi was agitated.

"stop saying nonsense. Come, let's go inside. You need to rest" Onyinye waved her off.

"Peter, it's been three months now, and none of what you promised to do has been fulfilled" Kachi complained bitterly.

"patience, my love, everything will work out fine" Peter replied

"I am running out of patience!" Kachi snapped

"please Kachi, for the sake of our child don't" Peter pleaded. "I swear to you that I am working hard to make everything right"

Peter fell on his knees "please don't leave me"

"who...who said... Who said anything about leaving?" Kachi stuttered. She wasn't expecting that....

"stop deceiving yourself, Kachi, Peter will not marry you." Onyinye said after Kachi told what had happened.

"Onyi, please not now". Kachi tried to wave her off.

"Kachi listen to me. You are a very young beautiful girl. You still have a long way to go. The world is large and beautiful. You need to explore it" she was beginning to capture Kachi's attention.

Onyinye liking what she's getting from her friend, continued her narrative essay.

"I mean you are just 19,so you don't need to tie yourself and live in bondage all in the name of marriage and love" she rolled her eyes at the mention of love and marriage.

"Onyinye, stop being dramatic" Kachi chuckled.

"am not. Just saying the truth" Onyinye shrugged

"but... How did you know that the world is large and beautiful?" Curious Kachi asked..

Onyinye scratched the back of her head, awkwardly. She must have spoken too much and now the girl is curious. She racked her head for something.

"remember that time I left the village for a very long time, before the death of my mother?" she began.

Kachi only nodded to that. She recalled that Onyinye ran away from home but only came back after the death of her mother who was her only surviving relation.

"you mean ran away?" Kachi couldn't help but correct the wrong impression. She needed to remind the girl that everyone knew she ran away.

"however you choose to see it" She replied nonchalantly "well I went to the city"

" with who?" Kachi gasped.

"with my man dummy" She replied.

"how come you never told me?" Kachi quarried.

"cos you never asked. Anyway that's not the point." Onyinye enthusiasts

"he got me the phone you saw me with, took me to many beautiful places, so believe me when I tell you that the world is large and beautiful"

Onyinye did not hesitate to tell Kachi the names of places she's been to and what she did there. Soon Kachi was lost in the world of imagination. She wants to explore and experience the city, but she had a problem......
