Chapter 5 Rex Kings

I let out the breath I didn't realize I was holding as he pulled away. His smirk disappeared as if it was never there. He knocked on the window with his knuckles and almost immediately, Mike slid into the driver's seat, pulling the door shut behind him with a soft click.

~Rex~

"Mike will take you wherever you want to go". I told her, not meeting her gaze.

"I can manage". She quickly objected.

Slowly, I turned my head to look at her. Her head was bowed, the black strands of her hair cascading over her cheeks as she tried to turn on her phone.

"Isn't it a little too late to refuse since you are already wearing the seatbelt?

She didn't raise her gaze from the phone or say a word.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

She let out a sigh of resignation, setting down her phone.

"Home, I need to make food for Gramps". She replied. The engine throttled to life almost immediately as Mike drove out of the hospital premises.

We sat in awkward silence for what seemed like an eternity. Normally, I enjoy my peace and quiet, but with her, it felt uncomfortably quiet. When it seemed she wouldn't say a word, I broke the silence.

"I'm Rex Kings. Twenty-six, you'll discover more about me later". It occurred to me that she knew nothing about me, yet she didn't bother to ask.

"I thought you were younger". She said, turning her face away from the window to me.

"Coming from someone who looks like she's seventeen. My family might have a hard time believing I'm not into child abuse when they see you". I teased, keeping my face straight ahead.

"I'm not a child, I'm..."

"Twenty-two". I interrupted her mid-sentence, glancing at her.

Her brown eyes widened a bit as she stared at me in surprise.

"How did you know that?" Her eyes squinted like that of a suspicious detective.

"I know just about everything about you Dawn Anderson."

Her jaw dropped.

"How did you?.."

"Ever heard of a private investigator?" I flicked my hair away from my face in an exaggerated manner that showed I was proud of myself".

"Isn't that illegal?!" She tapped her fist on her bag, as her tone raised and her lips pushed forward in a pout.

"Is it?" I smirked.

~Dawn~

I was dropped off right in front of my house. The luxurious car contradicted the very humble condition of the neighborhood but Rex didn't seem to mind. He was busy typing away on his phone.

Luckily I don't have nosy neighbors who are so bored out of their minds that they poke their noses in matters that have absolutely nothing to do with them.

"Mike will pick you up and bring you to my office so you can sign the contract". Rex said, not lifting his face from his phone. I nodded but I bet he didn't see that.

I closed the car door gently, careful not to cause any damage as damage to expensive cars is super expensive to repair.

I strolled toward my house, fetching the key from my bag. I slid the key Into the keyhole and twisted the knob to open the door.

I was immediately welcomed by the lovely and calming feeling of home. I slid off my dirty sneakers and threw my bag on the old couch. I plopped down on another couch, throwing my head back and closing my eyes.

I felt my body relax as I reminisced on all that had happened in less than twenty-four hours. My thoughts wandered to my accident which brought me to Rex. I relived the moment of the accident through my memories until a horrible memory popped into my mind.

I jerked up, shaking my head to dismiss the memory, so I wouldn't end up crying again.

Sighing, I picked up the remote and switched on the TV. The weekend news suddenly made me realize I am still a college student and I also have to go to work later in the afternoon.

I instantly got off the couch to take a refreshing bath, after which I headed to the kitchen to cook for Gramps.

After cooking, I put the soup in a flask and put it in a basket, along with the last of the fruits we have at home.

I quickly changed into a pair of blue jeans, a white T-shirt, and a clean pair of sneakers. I brushed my hair and tucked it behind my small ears, grabbed the basket and my bag, and headed out of the house.

I noticed Mike was already waiting for me in a car different from the one that brought me home. I strolled toward it and as I neared it, Mike alighted to open the car door for me.

"You don't have to". I said.

He did utter a word, not even a smile. He simply waited for me to get in, closed the door, and proceeded to the driver's side. His silence made me feel a little edgy but it was also comfortable.

"Excuse me, sir, I need to head to the hospital first to see my grandpa". I said as Mike drove out of the neighborhood.

"Don't worry ma'am, sir Rex won't take much of your time". He responded, glancing at me through the interior rearview mirror.

I sighed and leaned back into the chair, checking the old watch that I seldom wear for the time. I was relieved to know I still have a few hours before work starts by three since I resume work by three p.m. on Saturdays and five p.m. on weekdays.
