Chapter Five: The Unfortunate One

The vampire suddenly felt a terrible premonition. Before he can process what it was, right below his neck was a glowing silver dagger, ready to separate his head from his body.

He didn't know how and when she did it, but suddenly Mallory suddenly got into his side with a conjured silver dagger. His eyes contracted and his brain almost froze. But out of instinct, he blinked and arrived far away across the room.

If he had a heart like them, the Noble vampire feels like it would already burst from beating so fast.

The slight comfort in the distance gave him gave him an opportunity to look at the dagger. He can clearly see it shine with silver light and concluded that it was made by silver or at least coated by. Mallory was clenching it in her hand, and the sharp blade of the dagger was pointing towards him.

He looked at the dagger closely and his eyes widens in disbelief. Even the hilt was silver! 'How is she holding that?!'

Silver is equally dangerous to vampires and werewolves! Just a touch of it would burn the skin. How can she hold it close against her skin and be okay?

A lot of questions ran into his mind, but none of them could answer itself.

And then the Noble vampire looked into her eyes.

Psshhh!

Without warning, his eyes burned.

"AHHH!!!" the chief screamed in pain. He crouched and clutched his eyes.

He felt his eyes melting like an iron on a furnace. His vision blackened, and the agony intensified.

Fear engulfed him for the first time. He hadn't felt this close to death before. No one had ever threatened his life. He didn't have a full understanding of what happened, but he knew what he saw.

'I didn't know I would encounter her in this small, puny pack!' The vampire's inner voice trembled.

He remembered the prophecy and can't help but be terrified even more.

But soon, he calmed down, feeling the pain slowly subside.

He was confident that he can escape because she was just a teenager. He saw her almost losing control, and compared to him–even without his eyesight–he was still sane. The chief knew where the door was, and just a shout from for the others. His underlings will come running!

As his mind spun, he didn't notice that she had already had her dagger on his neck. She was in front of him for a split second, appearing in a speed of light. Just in time, she heard him whispering with urgency.

"I have to report this! The Goddess---" Before he can complete his sentence, his head separated from his body.

Without his vision, the Noble vampire did not know what had happened. All he knew was that his head went flying before slamming on the floor.

Thud!

The head tried to gasp, to breathe, to stay alive. The blood he got from his victims flowed out from his severed head and body, flowing out quickly as if they can't wait to get away from the body.

The head let out a sound that sounds like a squeak, his body spasm before finally it stopped.

The vampire died just like that.

Snap.

Suddenly, Mallory wakes up from her trance.

She felt the power in her disconnect from her body, and she regained her mind.

'What happened?' Mallory asked herself in a panic.

Her eyes looked around before finally settling down on the vampire's body.

"H-he's dead?" Mallory asked herself, not recognizing her own voice. She looked closely, her eyes widening. "Just like that?"

Mallory felt happiness entered her body. Although she did not know what happened, the primary threat was finally gone! A corner of her lips lifted when she realized something.

There was something amiss.

Mallory's expression froze as she looked for what it was.

Then she realized.

The vampire's dead! He's dead, yet his body is still here!

How?

Mallory remembered how vampires disintegrate into nothingness after they die, and then turn into ashes. But this one didn't!

Her body went stiff, her hands trembled, and because of this, a dagger fell off from her hand.

She looked at the ordinary black dagger, and flashes of memories crammed themselves in her mind. Mallory raised a hand to cup her eyes, feeling how they throb.

She saw a memory, of which she was looking directly into the vampire's eyes. She saw herself, and at the same time, not her. Her eyes were glowing, with the moon's symbol engraved on them. Both of her cheeks had a short leaf like pattern that was seemingly alive as it slithered. They were on horizontal pattern, seeming wanted to reach out to the end of the other tattoo-like pattern on the other cheeks.

'Wha-who?' She clutched her eyes more, feeling the pain intensify.

Suddenly, she saw a dark cave.

Then she saw the person she had long haven't seen. The person who she left unwillingly when she yelled at her to run, the person who told her to live well, the person who died to protect her.

'Mom?' she cried.

Her mother was looking down at her, her eyes a bit puffy from crying. She reached out to her and caressed her cheeks.

She heard her sad whisper. "Your name is Mallory. Mallory–the unfortunate one."
