Chapter 3 The Struggle Begins

[Long Hours, Small Paychecks]

John was both anxious and excited on his first day at Harrison Investments. The beautiful office building, which was teeming with eager workers, had the air of a financial shrine. His desk, which was tucked between rows of others in the open-plan workplace, was then shown to him along with a sleek badge.

Sitting at his desk, John couldn't help but marvel at the towering skyscrapers visible from the office windows. From his background in the suburbs, it was a far cry. But as the days grew into weeks, he soon saw that the high finance industry wasn't all glitz and glamour.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the skyline, casting long shadows over the office, John found himself in the midst of an intense project. He was reviewing financial reports, spreadsheet after spreadsheet, his eyes bleary from hours of staring at numbers. The clock on his computer screen read 10:00 PM, and many of his colleagues were still hard at work

John made the decision to take a quick break since he was both exhausted and frustrated. A few co-workers were gathered around the coffee maker in the break room when he entered.

One of them said, "Late night again, huh?"

John sluggishly nodded. Yes, it has been nonstop recently.

Welcome to the grind, my friend," said a co-worker. Particularly during earnings season, this location is under strain.

John's initial enthusiasm had been tempered by the relentless demands of the job. The long hours, the constant pressure to meet deadlines, and the never-ending stream of data to analyze were taking a toll. And the paycheck he received at the end of the month, though more substantial than anything he had earned before, seemed paltry compared to the hours he was putting in.

John knew that this was the reality of Wall Street as he sipped his coffee. Making wise investment choices wasn't enough; success in the fiercely competitive world of finance also needed a lot of work, commitment, and sacrifice.

Sarah, a senior co-worker, overheard them talking and joined in. John, the early years are challenging for everyone. However, it is here that you learn the most. It resembles a finance boot camp. It will pay off if you persist.

In the middle of the grind, her words gave me a glimpse of optimism. John was determined to succeed despite the difficult path ahead of him. He moved back to his workstation and caught a glimpse of his parents' framed portrait, which served as a reminder of the goals he was pursuing. The meagre income and hard hours were only the start of his career on Wall Street, and he was prepared to put up with anything to accomplish his objectives.
