Chapter 6 Poisoned

MAIA'S POV

It had been two weeks since my mate last visited me. Most probably, he was so disgusted by my weakness that he did not even want to see me. Who would have blamed him?

The only people who visited me these past two weeks were the doctor and the girl who would bring me food. Just a couple of days ago, the doctor finally removed the IV from me. She said that I was still a little weak and should eat my meals so that I would get stronger. I wanted to tell her so badly that there was no point in doing so because I was a disgrace to our kind.

I heard the door being unlocked and the same girl who always brings me food came in.

"You haven't touched your breakfast. Why won't you eat? You will not get stronger if you don't eat your meals." she said in almost a whisper voice.

I ignored her as I stared outside the window, looking at how far the trees stretched out in the forest.

"Don't you like the food?" she asked when I did not answer her the first time.

I looked at her with so much emptiness in my eyes.

"Why do you care?" I asked.

"I know you are going through something tough right now, but you also have to take care of yourself. You can never solve whatever problem it is that you have by starving yourself to death." She explained.

I sat there staring at her. Why was she being nice to me?

"Why are you being so nice to me? I don't even know you." I whispered.

"Do I have to know you to be nice to you? Do you think I see you as some kind of monster?" she asked.

"Your King Alpha does." I said.

"Do you really think that?" she asked.

"I know that. I wouldn't be here if he doesn't think so, and he wouldn't be ignoring me for the past two weeks if he thought otherwise," I replied.

"You are completely wrong. King Alpha left the castle ten days ago and has not returned yet." She said.

"Then why am I still locked up here in this cell? What does he want from me if he doesn't even want me?" I asked.

"You are not in a cell, Maia. This is way too clean for a cell. Prisoners don't get these types of food. Last, no one has locked you up in here. You just never tried it yourself to know." she explained.

"How did you know my name?" I asked.

It shocked me she knew so much about me without me knowing anything about her or how.

"I have been bringing you your food for the last two weeks. The King Alpha ordered me to look after you, Maia," she replied.

"If he is going to kill me, he should not bother wasting food on nobody like me." I said.

"If the Alpha King was going to kill you, he would have killed you right where he found you. He would not have brought you here," she replied.

"No, you are wrong. He brought me here to torture me. I know it." I said.

"I doubt that, but one thing I know is that your food will not finish unless you don't eat it." She replied.

I looked at the food, then shook my head.

"I don't want to eat." I said.

"Why?" she asked.

"I just don't feel like eating it. You can just take it back to the kitchen and have somebody else eat it so it won't go to waste." I said bluntly, before looking outside the window.

"I don't know why you are punishing yourself like this, but know that if you need a friend - I am here. I promise you that whatever you tell me, I will never tell a single soul - not even the Alpha King," she said.

She took the food from the table and left. When I looked at the door, I noticed that she still left the tray of food for my lunch.

I walked over to the table and looked at the food. Without even touching it, I felt a bile go up my throat. I ran to the bathroom and threw up whatever I last ate. After emptying my stomach, I dragged myself back to the bed. I was feeling dizzy and sick.

For the next couple of hours, I kept thinking about why I threw up.

'How I wish Avi was still alive. I'm sure she would know something.' I sighed in my head.

'Bitch, did you already make a funeral for me?' I heard Avi say.

'Avi? Are you real? Are you really alive?' I exclaimed with excitement.

'No, bitch! I'm a ghost,' she replied.

I laughed at her over dramatic self.

'I missed you, Avi. I was so worried about you and thought they killed you.' I said, mumbling the last part.

'Bitch, they can't kill me. When you fainted, I could barely keep myself awake. I felt my energy drained,' she replied.

When I realized it was my fault, I immediately apologized.

'I am so sorry, Avi! This is all my fault. I starved you as well when I starved myself. You don't deserve me. I almost killed you. I am so sorry.' I cried out.

'Maia, stop! I'm not blaming you for anything. Going through a very rough patch in your life made you depressed. I truly understand.' she said.

'What have I done to deserve you, Avi?' I asked.

'The Moon Goddess knew we would need each other,' she simply replied.

'I wished I knew why the Moon Goddess has paired us with the Alpha King or why we are where we are right now.' I said.

'Well, you will never know if you are dead, right? So, why don't you eat your lunch? Isn't that your favorite - Lasagna?' she replied.

'Something weird happened, Avi.' I said.

'What happened?' she asked.

'I threw up when I smelt it earlier.' I said.

'Are you sure it was the food?' She asked.

'That's the only thing I touched.' I replied.

'Why don't you try it again?' She suggested.

'Okay.' I replied, standing up from the bed.

I went to the table and took the fork. I was about to take a small bite when I felt the bile going up my throat again, making me run to the bathroom.

'I told you so.' I said, dragging my feet back to the bed.

'I don't understand. Lasagna is your favorite. You could eat an entire tray of it all by yourself. Now, you can barely even take a bite?' Avi replied.

'I don't know, Avi. Something is wrong. I'm scared.' I confessed.

'Don't worry, Maia. We will figure this out together. Just hang in there.' she said.

There was complete silence as we both thought about what could be the problem.

'Maybe they poisoned me when they gave me the IV drip.' I said, breaking the silence between us.

'If they poisoned you, we would have been dead already.' Avi replied.

'Hmm... It makes sense.' I said.

'Maia, how long has it been that they imprisoned us?' she asked.

'I'm not sure. Maybe about a month now. Why?' I replied.

'I think I may have an idea.' she said.

'What is it?' I asked, worried about setting in.

What she said next felt like it pushed me into a cliff.

'Maia, I think you are pregnant,' she said.
