Chapter 5 Strange Cheerfulness

Maeve sighed inwardly before saying, "I'm hungry, please could you make me breakfast?"

"Okay, ma'am. Coming right up," Ivy replied, slightly lowering her head. She rushed to the kitchen to do as she was told.

There was something strange about Maeve this morning. Although Ivy couldn't place a finger on it, she felt that Maeve seemed a little more reasonable than she usually was before.

Ivy expected her to make some unachievable demands, but surprisingly, she only asked for food.

There was nothing Ivy wished for than Maeve to be a little kinder and accept Dominic. She knew that Dominic would have a hard life if his wife continued to hate him.

"Ivy, what did you put in this? It tastes so good!"

Maeve exclaimed as soon as she took the first spoonful of porridge she was served minutes later.

"Oh, nothing special. This is just an ordinary porridge." Ivy smiled, wondering why Maeve was being so cheerful and appreciative today.

"Believe me when I say that this tastes amazing. I have never tasted anything like it before. It's so smooth unlike the rough ones I'm used to eating. I give you ten stars!" These words sounded like music to Ivy's ears. In no time, her frozen smile turned into a genuine one.

"Thank you, ma'am. I'm glad you like it."

Maeve took a few more spoonfuls and then took a big bite from the fried egg and ham sandwich. It was equally delicious.

Suddenly, her phone on the table buzzed.

A text message just came in.

Maeve glanced at the phone, only to find that the message was from the man she used to think she loved, Dylan Collins. She looked away and continued munching on her food.

Not long after, another message came in.

"Ugh! So annoying!" Maeve picked up her phone, intending to blacklist Dylan, but she noticed the second message was actually from Dominic. She dropped the sandwich and tapped the message without further ado.

It read, "I bought you the ointment. Apply it when you wake up, so that you'd feel better."

Ointment? What ointment?

Maeve tilted her head as her mind went back to the passionate sex they had last night. And then, it hit her. She quickly sent a response.

At this time, Dominic was in a meeting at work. He was seated at the head of the large table with a serious face. The other top executives who were sitting around him had their lips zipped. As for the manager who was speaking on the platform, he was trembling out of nervousness.

Everyone here knew that Dominic was quick-tempered. If they made any mistake, he would get short with them immediately.

Dominic was staring at his phone screen. When he re-read his last message for what seemed like the thousandth time, his brows furrowed slightly. Did he overdo it? Did Maeve really willingly give herself to him last night? Or did she just do it because of what Dylan and the Wright family stood to gain?

Before he could fathom the reason, Maeve's response came in.

"You're so annoying!!"

Taken aback, Dominic's eyes widened a little and the corners of his lips lifted slowly. He could picture how embarrassed and flustered Maeve looked now. Her cheeks and ears must be flushed red.

A dozen of eyes widened at the sight of Dominic's face. What just happened? Did he really just smile? Did Jacob's presentation skill become so excellent that even the cold boss was pleased?

If not, why was he smiling now?

Jacob Dixon's joy knew no bounds when he saw his boss' smile. His confidence shot to the roof as he continued the presentation.

"Meeting adjourned."

Suddenly, Dominic interrupted the ongoing meeting with a darkened face.

A tumult of murmurs went up. The executives exchanged confusing looks. Dominic just smiled seconds ago. How come he was now frowning? All eyes turned to Jacob and narrowed a little as if they were blaming him for saying something he wasn't supposed to.

Jacob was at a loss. He opened his arms innocently. He had kept to the script of this presentation. Why was he being blamed?

Unbeknownst to them, the sudden change in Dominic's mood was because of the message he just received from his assistant, informing him that Dylan was actually headed for his villa.

There was no other reason why Dylan would go to Dominic's house except to see Maeve.

Meanwhile, Maeve had just finished breakfast and was stretching lazily. She stood up, intending to go upstairs to use the ointment Dominic bought.

"Excuse me, ma'am. There's a man here to see you. He said his name is Dylan Collins," Ivy said, standing at the foot of the stairs.
