Chapter 4 Him

Anna woke up the next morning upset at herself. She couldn't believe she slept off while waiting for him. What if she missed him again? Quickly, she rushed down the stairs, headed to the breakfast table, but he wasn't there. She went quickly to find John, and she found him in the kitchen, talking to the cook Matilda.

"Good morning John, Good morning Matilda," Anna greeted them.

"Good morning, Miss Anna. Sir Devon left a while ago. John knew what she was going to ask.

Anna's shoulders dropped. She couldn't believe it. She missed him again for the second time. What was she going to do?

She couldn't eat much during breakfast because she had a lot going on in her mind. She was thankful she had a place to stay, but she couldn't stay here forever.

She needed to speak to him and ask him to help her. Anna practiced what to say to him all day yesterday. Now she had to wait till midnight again....

Margaret sat in her office almost bursting out in rage. It had been two days since Anna had escaped. But her useless men couldn't find her till now.

"What do you mean, you can't find her? It's been two days!, two damn days!, you fool! Get out of here! And don't come back till you have good news!, which is you found her! You incompetent bast***ds!". She roared at them, her voice resonating through the entire room.

She burst out in anger, enraged because she knew Anna couldn't have gotten away by herself. Someone would have helped her out.. Margaret knew

She had asked Hailey if she knew who did, but she swore she only opened the door for her. Margaret believed her because her daughter couldn't have had the time to do that. She was getting more anxious with each passing day.

She needed her niece dead. if she knew this would happen, she would have killed her long ago. Now she was causing her a lot of problems, and Margaret had no idea how Ann manipulated that foolish daughter of hers into helping her.

"That sly brat," Margaret muttered in anger. She couldn't wait to get her hands on her....

Devon sat in the office with some files on his table and hands. He looked at his watch and it was almost eight pm. He remembered he promised George that he would have dinner at his uncle's place.

He got up and walked out the door. Lucas stood up quickly to follow him, but Devon stopped him.

"you can go home for the night, I will drive myself".

"Ok sir goodnight sir"...

Devon arrived at his uncle's villa a few minutes past nine pm. He walked into the house, and one servant took his coat.

His uncle and aunt were waiting in the living room already"

"Devon, son, you are finally here" His uncle stood up and walked up to him. He was glad he came.

His aunt Melissa had a bright smile on her face. She had always considered Devon as her son after his parents passed.

"Devon, how have you been? We were really glad when you agreed to have dinner with us." Came Melissa's soft voice.

"I've been doing okay aunt, you appear to be doing okay too." Melissa smiled at the compliment from her nephew...

George came out from the dining room to find his parents doting over Devon.

"hi cous, you are late," George said in an annoying tone, interrupting their conversation.

Devon just gave him a dry look, without saying anything, which only made a silly grin appear on George's face.

At dinner, his uncle Steve asked about the company.

He knew being the leader of a company was a stressful task. "How is work these days? I hope it's not too stressful". He started.

"I think I'm used to it already, so it doesn't appear stressful to me," Devon replied, earning a nod from Steve.

"Could you guys please stop talking about work already? It is so boring to listen to." George rolled his eyes, interrupting their conversation.

Steve's face turned grim at George's words.

"Why can't you be more like Devon, you idiot? You run away from work as soon as you get the chance," Max began, sighing disappointedly.

"How are you going to lead my company when I retire?" He continued, trying to talk some sense into his son.

George had a tired look on his face. He was expecting his dad to say that. It was like his anthem now.

"You are not going to retire anytime soon dad, you are still pretty young too. Let me enjoy my freedom while it lasts," George retorted, which made Melissa glare at her son.

Steve ignored George's words. He knew his words were not enough to change him.

"How do you like the cabin, Devon?", his uncle asked.

"It's okay, thank you, uncle".

"You don't need to thank me, just consider it an early birthday gift from me, you can go there in your free time"...

After dinner, Steve asked Devon to follow him to his study.

"Would you like a drink?" His uncle asked, and Devon nodded. Steve poured two glasses of whiskey and handed one to his nephew, which Devon respectfully accepted.

He knew what his uncle was going to say; he had an inkling of it already.

"The real reason I asked you to come for dinner, Devon, is because of what I have been telling you, "his uncle started, taking a sip from his glass.

"You are getting close to thirty and you know what is written in your father's will''. His uncle gestured for him to sit down on the couch. He sat down, taking a sip from the whiskey.

"The shareholders are planning to hold a meeting soon about you, Devon ".

"I don't want to pressure you, but I think it's time you get married".

His uncle tried to read the expression on his face, but Devon had none. Steve sighed.

"You need an heir to make your position solid. I don't know why my brother gave such a condition. He was so hard to understand, just like you. Most times I mistake him for you." A sad smile spread across Steve's face when some memories came back to him.

Devon was like a copy and paste of his elder brother. They had the same behavioral trait and almost the same look.

"You need to act faster than those greedy bastards, Devon. They are always looking for a way to bring you down".

"I've given it a thought too uncle, I have a solution already".

Steve wasn't expecting to hear that. He was thinking he needed to persuade him more, but Devon beat him to it.

"Do you have someone in mind already? I could ask Melissa to help you".

Devon nodded, "I have someone in mind already". His uncle was even more surprised by this.

"is she someone I know?" his uncle probed, trying to get more information.

"No, uncle," Devon answered, simply.

Steve's curiosity grew by the second

"When will I get to meet her?" He asked.

"Soon, real soon, uncle," Devon said, not giving out more details.

This only piqued Steve's curiosity the more. Who was the mystery girl?
