Chapter 3 Find her

Devon sat in his Spacious Office, with a laptop and different files on his enormous mahogany table. To his left was a towering bookshelf filled with files and an elegant antique collection.

The white ceiling was high and at his back was a glass window showing the busy streets of the city. An exquisite and impressive painting was on his left which went along with the colour of the wall.

Devon sighed, regretting what he did. He had no intention of going over there last night, but George, his cousin, kept insisting he take a look at the cabin.

He had a bad feeling about it from the moment they were on the road. Now he had to deal with her. A light knock on the door interrupted Devon's thoughts, and his secretary, Lucas, walked in.

"Did you find out about her?" He enquired from Lucas in an icy voice.

"Yes, sir, I was just about to report to you," Lucas answered nervously. He handed the file in his hand over to his boss. Devon gazed at it for some seconds before he opened the file to see the contents inside.

The first thing he saw was her name, Anna Wilson. Her parents were late, but he knew who they were. He had no idea they had a daughter. Their company was a reputable one in the city.

Her aunt was her guardian at the moment. Devon wondered why she was there.

"Was there a report about her being kidnapped?" he asked, thinking of that as the only plausible reason."

"No sir, there was nothing like that". Then why or what was she running from?

"You may leave", he said, dropping the file on the table. Lucas left the office quickly. He was curious, too. He almost had a heart attack when she jumped in front of the car, out of nowhere.

He thought he had killed someone and almost freaked out.

"She must be a crazy person," Lucas muttered to himself as he walked to his seat.

Lucas was even more surprised when his boss carried her home. The Devon he knew would have never done that. He would have sued her for doing that.

He wondered what caused her to act that way. His boss wasn't saying anything, which made him more curious...

After snooping around for a few more minutes, Anna decided it was time to leave before someone saw her. She dropped the photo album in her hand, putting it back as naturally as possible to avoid suspicion.

As Anna turned to walk out, she saw a man staring at her, and her heart stopped.

It was John, the butler, she was caught red-handed snooping.

"You can't be in here, miss," He started. Anna held her chest. He scared the hell out of her.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know" she apologized, feeling nervous

Lucas smiled slightly at her, and Anna returned the smile. "I just came to let you know lunch is ready," he said, his eyes on the photo album behind her.

Anna followed his gaze and knew immediately she shouldn't have snooped around there.

She finally gave a terrible impression of herself. Worry lines formed on her forehead. She hoped. John wouldn't tell his boss about this, she could be sent away for all she knew.

John left the room first, followed by Anna, who wanted to slap herself for her curious behavior. She had always been that way since she was a child...

As she expected, they served more delicious meals at the magnificent table. The aroma alone made her stomach growl.

Anna knew it was going to be more delicious, as the aroma was tantalizing. She found out the amiable woman from before was the cook.

She looked at John, who scared the hell out of her earlier. He still had the same expression on, as when she first met him...

After lunch, Anna needed to speak with Hailey, her cousin. But she wasn't sure it was safe now. For all she knew, her aunt may be with her.

She looked at the clock on the bedside table and sighed. It was almost 5 pm. She was sure it would be a few more hours before 'Devon' came back.

She came out of the room after thirty minutes and went down the stairs hurriedly. Anna needed to speak with Devon as soon as possible. She was afraid of being caught by her aunt.

It would mean death for her if she went back there. Anna wasn't planning on dying anytime soon. She had to get her parent's property back; . It they worked hard for it.

She couldn't let her aunt steal it from her, it was their legacy they had left.

Anna finally found John after searching around for him. He was standing close to the dining room and the kitchen.

"Excuse me Sir", she called out to him, trying to get his attention. John turned around, from what he was doing, to see who it was. "What can I help you with? '', he asked and Anna stood with a smile on her face.

"I'm sorry for bordering you, but. You please, I need to know when your boss will be back. I'm really in a hurry"

"As I told you the other time, miss, he won't be back till late in the night," John tried to explain to her. But this only made Anna more anxious.

That wasn't what she hoped to hear, she needed to speak to him "Just let me know when he gets back"

John nodded, and Anna turned away, heading back to her room.

Devon sat in his car with his eyes closed and his back rested. He was waiting for Lucas, his secretary, to bring an important file from the office.

The day had been long. It was almost midnight.

A few minutes later, his phone rang, causing him to open his eyes to see who it was.

It was George, his cousin. He sighed deeply, allowing the phone to ring for some seconds more before he answered. Before he could utter a word, he heard George's excited voice, which annoyed him most o the time.

"Do you like the cabin?" George inquired.

"I knew you would. My dad wouldn't leave me alone; he wants to know what you think of it," he added, waiting for Devon's response.

Devon couldn't tell him what had happened. He." didn't even get to the house before a crazy girl jumped in front of his car. So he had no choice but to lie.

"It's okay, tell uncle I'm grateful for it". He responded.

"Tell him yourself over dinner tomorrow. He wants you to have dinner at the house".

Devon sighed. He knew the reason his uncle wanted him to come over. "if I'm free," Devon said, giving an excuse.

"You know that doesn't work on him even, just say yes," George persuaded.

"Okay, sure," Devon finally agreed, before he hung up the phone.

He glanced at his watch to see that Lucas had been gone for almost thirty minutes. He wondered what was taking him so long.

Lucas hurried to the car, almost tripping when he came out of the elevator. He couldn't find the file anywhere.

He later found it on the printer. He dropped it there when he was sorting out some files earlier in the day.

"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting, sir," He apologized to Devon, gazing at him through the rearview mirror.

"Just drive," Came Devon's dry reply.

Lucas felt relief wash over him. Thankfully, his boss didn't look mad. If he had been mad, he would have driven off, leaving him behind. He started the car and drove away into the night...

Anna got tired of waiting for Devon to get back. She didn't even realize when she fell asleep. When John came to let her know that Devon was back, she was fast asleep.

It did not surprise Devon when he heard that. It was already past midnight when he got back to the house. He sat down near the fireplace in his study, with a drink in his hand, thinking.

He just might have a solution to his problems. It. He lay in the girl's hand, Anna Wilson. He just needed to use the right opportunity and one presented itself free. He poured himself another glass of whiskey.
