"Ok, ok, I'll shut up," Liu Jingfei said, waving his hands in a cross.
"I knew she was your ex-wife from the moment I saw her. However, it was fun pretending".
"Why don't you come down and greet her, give her a little surprise?" Liu Jingfei offered.
Tang Mingze rolled his eyes at his friend's response and walked away. After reaching a corner that was out of sight, he took out his phone.
"Find out every single thing that Wu Jiayi has done after our divorce," he instructed, then hung up. The person on the side was surprised to hear the name of the ex-madam.
Liu Wen introduced Wu Jiayi to each of his business partners. One of those partners was Wu Bolin. Unaware of his daughter's achievements during her exile in Japan, he was surprised to hear that his daughter had enough money to save his company.
"This girl has a lot of potential, I tell you; check out Bai Chenggong. It's a gold mine," Liu Wen praised. Wu Jiayi chuckled in embarrassment. She was genuinely glad that she came to this party, it was a free advertisement for her company.
From a distant corner of the room, Wu Xiaoniu witnessed the success of her sister. However, she was not going to let Ren Jiayi win. She grouped together a bunch of socialites, and a string of whispers started going around the hall.
"I've heard she slept with the investors," one of the whispers sounded.
"Yeah, she sold information to Shancun's competition when she worked there," another whisper said.
Wu Jiayi was chatting with potential investors over a glass of wine with Liu Wen, while Wu Xiaoniu was busy spreading rumors.
"Uncle Liu, I need some fresh air." She excused herself.
"Yes, daughter. Go get some fresh air," Wu Bolin hurried her. Ever since Wu Bolin heard about her accomplishments as a businesswoman, he was quick to claim her as his daughter. He even used the social situation to pressurize her into saving Shancun from bankruptcy.
"Alright, hurry back. I'll take you to meet my wife and my son's fiance's family. You must be bored being surrounded by old men the entire time," Liu Wen added.
"Old Wu, let's not talk about business at a family occasion," he rescued Wu Jiayi. Overwhelmed by fatherly feelings for Liu Wen, her eyes almost teared up. Even her biological father never treated her so kindly.
Liu Wen's confidence motivated Wu Jiayi to become even more successful. She didn't work so hard to fix her sister's mistakes. She was not going to let them trade her for money or give them a single dime. The only reason the Wu family was invited there was because the news of their bankruptcy was kept secret.
If the news was made public, then the Wu family would be officially done for. Wu Jiayi thought about the timely destruction of the Shancun while pacing in the backyard.
"Can anybody help me?" a moderate cry for help reached her ears.
Wu Jiayi looked up instinctively and saw a girl hanging from a rope made by a bunch of bedsheets tied together.
"Let me get someone to help you," Wu Jiayi offered. The girl rolled her eyes at Wu Jiayi.
Her actions offended Wu Jiayi.
"You really aren't in the position to complain," she mocked the girl.
"I'll jump, you catch me!" the girl exclaimed and jumped without warning. Wu Jiayi ran around in exasperation with her hands outward in a bid to catch her.
Instead of falling into her arms like Wu Jiayi expected, the girl fell on her back.
"Ouch!" Wu Jiayi cried in a low voice.
"Are you crazy!"
The girl ignored her and jumped up.
"Well, that wasn't too bad, was it?" the girl commented.
"Not for you," Wu Jiayi said, getting up with her hand on her back. The girl laughed out loud.
"Keep laughing like that if you want to be caught."
"..."
Wu Jiayi surveyed her from top to bottom to guess her identity. "I'm Fu Ziyi, Liu Jingfei's fiancé," the girl introduced herself.
"And I'm trying to run away from this engagement," Fu Ziyi added.
Despite seeing the main character of the party trying to run away, she didn't care. She didn't even try to guess the reason she was trying to run away.
"Ok," Wu Jiayi replied monotonously.
Her indifference surprised Fu Ziyi.
"And?"
She tried to guide Wu Jiayi into a conversation.
"And what?"
Fu Ziyi had failed to catch her interest. Wu Jiayi waited for a second before she turned to leave.
Frustrated by Wu Jiayi's lack of concern, Fu Ziyi grabbed her arm to prevent her from leaving.
"Aren't you going to ask what I was doing hanging like that or why I'm trying to run away from my own engagement party," Fu Ziyi gritted her teeth.
Wu Jiayi's dark eyes made direct contact with her shining ones. The light in Fu Ziyi's eyes reminded her of her childhood.
Looking directly into Wu Jiayi's empty eyes made her panic slightly. After a split second, Ren Jiayi honestly answered.
"No".
Just like that, the exchange was over. A blooming friendship was nipped in the bud by Wu Jiayi or so it seemed. An awkward silence took over.
Fu Ziyi cleared her throat loudly to restart the conversation.
"No," Wu Jiayi said.
"What? You don't have a car?" Fu Ziyi innocently asked.
Wu Jiayi thought she was going to ask the same question again; luckily, she didn't.
"I have a car." Wu Jiayi tossed her key and dashed away before Fu Ziyi could stop her.
After making sure that she was not being chased by her, she went back inside.
Tang Mingze, who had been watching them from the first floor balcony, slyly smiled to himself.
"Look at the kind of problems my dear wifey has gotten herself into," he thought to himself. Tang Mingze suddenly cringed at his own thoughts.
"My dear wifey is so cute," Liu Jingfei suddenly appeared behind him.
"Your fiancé has fled the engagement," Tang Mingze mocked.
Liu Jingfei came near him and whispered something in his ear. Tang Mingze didn't know why, but he liked his idea very much.
Before Wu Jiayi could enter the hall, she was cornered by a man. She looked angrily at the man who had sabotaged her.
It was her ex-husband, Tang Mingze. The last man she wanted to see.
