Chapter 5 Samantha and Mr. Shortstuff - Chapter 5

He didn't call her. 'Why would he call?' Sam thought. Although he was not her type, she couldn't help but wonder if any guy would actually want her. She wanted to believe Doug's words from the other night, and that Stan must be an idiot.

Sam spent her days working, and soon it was Friday again. June had already insisted on going out and Sam agreed, but she had her terms. She didn't want to wear heels again. June had agreed to a different bar, at least to start. They went to a bar called Hoops and grabbed a couple drinks. It was one of the less popular bars in the area, but a lot of the guys from local teams came here to drink. Sam usually only came here with the guys, but knowing Stuart was going to be here and need a ride home later, she reasoned with June to just wait for him.

"So what ended up happening with that guy from last week?" June asked. She was always trying to get juicy stories out of her friends, usually so she could provide some of her own.

"Nothing. We talked for a little then went to sleep."

"Seriously?" June pouted. "You had a guy in your bed and you did NOTHING!"

Sam was getting seriously annoyed by her friend at this point. "You know I won't sleep around, so why is that so shocking?" The more June acted out, the more Sam was beginning to question their friendship. "I gave him my number and he hasn't called. If I had his I would give it to you so you could have him."

June sensed that her friend was reaching the limit on the harassment for the night, so she backed off. "Tell me about how the rest of your week went. Did you go to the softball games again?"

"Yes, I keep score for them. Then we came back here and had a few beers." Sam didn't like talking about her brother's friends, but she knew June wouldn't let it go either so she added, "And don't worry most of them are old, married men. You aren't missing out on much." Honestly, there were quite a few 'hotties' on the team, but they were playboys.

"Geez you are such a killjoy." June pouted.

Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw someone staring at her, but when Stuart came up to her from the other side she lost track of that person. "If you are going to be my sober cab, maybe you shouldn't be drinking." Stuart was a little overbearing at times, which annoyed Sam.

"Don't worry it's just a beer. I won't have any more." Sam retorted.

June jumped in and said, "Well if you can't drink, we can at least go dance!" June was itching to get out of this place, but Sam wasn't ready. She felt more comfortable here, then at a club where random guys would be grinding up against her.

"Fine, just let me use the restroom first." Sam conceded. She wasn't ready to put up a fight just yet. She turned around to see Stan approaching the table. Since he hadn't called her, she assumed he wasn't actually walking towards her so she started walking towards the restrooms.

"Hey!" Stan reached out and grabbed her arm. "Are you trying to run away from me?"

She couldn't tell if he was joking or not. Sam just looked at him blankly and said, "Why would I need to run away. You have my number, but you didn't call. So why would I assume that you were looking for me anyway?" She abruptly turned around and started walking away. She only got one step before he grabbed her wrist.

"Listen, I came over to apologize. I know I should have called, but I really didn't think a girl like you would be interested in a guy like me."

"You're right! Why would I be interested in a guy who doesn't have the balls to call me. And I'm even less interested in guys who try to man handle me, so let go of my fucking wrist."

She was pissed at this point. And anyone looking at her could see it. Stan let go of her wrist and said, "Let me make it up to you and take you out to dinner."
