Chapter 4 A Requiem for My Wife's Departed Soul(4)

I fell to the ground, pulling my hair and crying in anguish. "Why did she have to endure such a fate? Why was she subjected to such treatment? Why?"

Amber was so frightened by my behavior that she didn't know how to console me and could only let her tears flow down her cheeks.

"I hate myself so much! I was always busy making money. I thought that if Nadia lived in our home, she would no longer be abused by her family. But I never thought they would be so cruel as to kill their own daughter."

Amber choked with sobs as she said, "Please don't cry, Henry. Crying won't bring Nadia back. We should seek justice for her and make sure she can smile from the depths of her grave."

"Yes, I want to seek justice for her," I said as I wiped my tears with force and stood up from the ground.

Amber and I started our revenge plan after careful planning.

The next move from the Prentiss family came sooner than expected. They brought Nadia's documents to a lawyer, claiming inheritance rights to the property she had left behind, as per the law.

Soon, I received a call from the lawyer requesting a meeting to discuss the inheritance distribution of Nadia's properties.

As soon as I received the call from the lawyer, I reached out to Amber to inquire about the progress of our plan.

Amber updated me that she had successfully made contact with Nathaniel. Despite his reputation for being lazy and wicked, he quickly fell for her and became completely enamored with her in just three days.

Additionally, they made arrangements for Amber to accompany Nathaniel to his home and meet his parents three days later.

The timing of this opportunity was perfect for me. I arranged with Amber that I would follow her to the house.

Three days later, Amber sent me a message before she departed.

I deliberately went out half an hour later after getting ready to leave.

As I stood at the doorstep of my house, I could hear the sound of laughter coming from inside, indicating that the Prentiss family was pleased with the meeting.

I couldn't resist giving Amber a mental thumbs-up at that point.

I then deliberately knocked on the door loudly.

"Who's there?" Mona asked impatiently as she approached the door to open it.

As soon as Mona saw me, her facial expression changed abruptly. She looked at Amber anxiously and whispered to me, "What are you doing here? We don't welcome you here. Please leave immediately."

I deliberately spoke loudly. "I think there's a misunderstanding here. This is my house, and you are only staying here temporarily. When did this place become your house, Mona?"

As I raised my voice, everyone in the room could hear me clearly. Amber's expression immediately changed upon hearing my words. She exclaimed, "What? Didn't you say you bought this house for us as our marital home? What is going on now? I told you that we cannot get married without a home. It is customary to provide betrothal gifts when getting married. It seems like you are trying to get me to marry you with empty promises! How dare you!" After expressing her anger, Amber stormed out of the house, ignoring Nathaniel's attempt to stop her.

As she walked past me, Amber squinted her eyes, silently asking me how her performance was.

I raised my eyebrows in approval, acknowledging that her performance was impressive.

Upon receiving my positive feedback, Amber covered her face with her hands and ran away while sobbing.

When Nathaniel attempted to attack me in a vicious manner, I was quick to react by kicking him to the ground.

"I suggest you go after her instead of trying to attack me. If she leaves, you might never see her again," I said with a hint of smugness.

After hearing my words, Nathaniel scrambled up from the ground and quickly ran after Amber.

With my arms crossed, I observed the end of the drama, and as I turned around, I noticed Mark and Mona glaring at me with malice in their eyes.

Mona looked at me with disgust and asked, "Didn't you get a call from the lawyer? How dare you come here?"

"I came here because of the lawyer's call. I want to discuss giving up your inheritance rights and transferring the properties to Delia. You won't be inheriting much anyway. It would be better to gift them to your granddaughter," I said, shrugging my shoulders.

"You can dream all you want, but you will be the one who gives up the inheritance rights. Nadia was with you for so many years. How could you try to take advantage of her death? How could you try to snatch the inheritance from her mother? You're such a heartless man. I really want to dig out your heart and see what it's made of," Mona exclaimed, making a big fuss again.

With narrowed eyes, I suddenly asked Mona, "Do you not know how Nadia died? Are you unaware of the circumstances surrounding her death?"

After hearing my words, fear flashed across Mark and Mona's faces. They stared at me with wide eyes and asked, "W-What are you trying to say?"

"Didn't Nadia die of an illness? Don't you know what caused Nadia's death? Wasn't it your neglect that led to her death?" My suspicions were confirmed as Mark and Mona reacted to my words with fear. It seemed that there was a conspiracy surrounding Nadia's death.

After hearing what I said, Mark and Mona breathed a sigh of relief.

Mona raised her voice and said, "She was your wife. You neglected her and spent all your time outside fooling around. It was your actions that led to her death. How could you blame us instead?" However, Mona's tone lacked confidence.

After being inspired by the conversation between Mona and me, Mark suggested, "It's because of you that Nadia died. Why else would she suddenly pass away without even being able to say a last word?" He might have thought that by accusing me of causing Nadia's death, they could protect themselves if the truth of Nadia's death was investigated. I couldn't help but acknowledge that it was a clever plan.

Unfortunately for him, I would not fall for it.

"I will have to consult with a lawyer since you are unwilling to give up your inheritance rights. If we cannot come to an agreement, we will see each other in court!" With that, I didn't bother to look at Mark and Mona's reactions and turned around to leave.

Before I could get home, Amber called me.

"Hello! How's it going over there? Did you find anything useful?" I asked.

"Yes, Nathaniel, your brother-in-law, didn't explicitly say they were responsible for Nadia's death, but he hinted at it. I need some time to gather evidence. He also mentioned that he knew your weakness and could force you to transfer the house to him within three days. You have to be careful," she warned.

Amber's words startled me. I realized that Delia was my only weakness, and I couldn't help but worry if Nathaniel, being the unpredictable person he was, might harm my daughter in some way.

I hung up the phone and instantly rushed toward my parent's house.

When I got to their house, I couldn't find Delia.

I asked my parents anxiously, "Where is Delia?"

"I received a visit from her uncle, who said her grandmother misses her a lot. Considering that her grandmother has just lost her daughter, I couldn't refuse the request..."

Upon hearing the news, I immediately realized that they were targeting my daughter. Without bothering to explain myself to my parents, I quickly left the house.

As soon as I went downstairs, my phone rang. I turned on my phone and saw that it was a call from Nathaniel.

"Hello... Where have you taken Delia? What you're doing is illegal, and you need to return her to me immediately, or I'll call the police." I gasped into the phone.

"I have your daughter with me right now. If you even think of calling the police, I will sell this little weasel to traffickers, and you'll never see her again. I never expected this little weasel to be worthy. I can sell her for several thousand dollars. With that money, I could have the time of my life," said Nathaniel wickedly from the other end of the phone.

After hearing this, I instantly felt dizzy.

I had assumed that the family only wanted to take our property, but I didn't anticipate that they had such intentions.

Mona's actions made sense now. She was fighting for the custody right of Delia in order to use her as a tool to deceitfully gain the property. After that, she planned to sell Delia off to traffickers. If they succeeded, they could claim that Delia had gone missing and take over all the inheritance with grandstanding.

I was on the verge of fainting due to anger, but I realized it wasn't the right time to lose control. My top priority was to ensure Delia's safety. While trying to calm Nathaniel down, I sent a message to Amber.

Soon, Nathaniel abruptly hung up the phone. I suspected that Amber had called him and arranged a meeting.

As Nathaniel agreed to meet Amber, he couldn't bring Delia with him. Therefore, he had to send her to Mark and Mona before the meeting.

I hailed a taxi to rush to my house and opened the phone app to check the house. After a few moments, I spotted Nathaniel returning home with Delia in his arms.

Delia couldn't stop crying, and Mona slapped her and locked her in the bedroom.

Using the smart device app, I took advantage of the moment and swiftly locked the bedroom door. Without unlocking it from my phone, no one could enter. At least for now, Delia was safe.

After completing these tasks, I hastily sent a message to Amber, urging her to obtain the evidence as soon as possible.

I, on the other hand, rushed home to deal with Mark and Mona.

Amber replied with an OK gesture and stopped contacting me.

Through my phone screen, I saw Mark and Mona quarreling angrily because they couldn't open the door of Delia's room.

As Mona raised her voice at him, Mark, who had a bad temper, grabbed her hair and started to beat her.

Mark struck Mona with great force, causing her face to swell and bruise, and she collapsed to the ground while wailing in pain.

As I witnessed the scene, there was no joy in my heart. Instead, I couldn't help but feel heartbroken as I recalled that Nadia had gone through the same.

As soon as I knocked on the door, Mona, with a bruised and swollen face, instantly perked up when she saw me.

With her hands on her waist, she cursed at me and refused to let me in.

Meanwhile, I could hear Delia crying from inside the room after hearing my voice.

I raised my phone and said, "If you don't let me take Delia away today, I will call the police and sue you for child trafficking."

Mark and Mona exchanged a fearful look, their eyes wide. "Y-You can't make baseless accusations. We are not involved in child trafficking. And what can we do if the door won't open? Do you think we want to keep this little weasel?" Mona exclaimed.

I gave Mona a stern look, then took out my phone and pressed the unlock button. The door clicked open, and Delia burst out crying, running straight into my arms.

At that moment, my priority was Delia's safety, so I didn't linger and quickly left with her in my arms.

Delia fell asleep in my arms on the way back to my parent's house. I gently wiped away her tears. As soon as I arrived home with Delia, my phone rang. It was Amber calling.

Amber's voice trembled as she spoke on the phone. "I have the evidence. Where are you right now? I'll come to you."

I told her the address of my parents' home. Fifteen minutes later, Amber arrived.

Amber's face was pale, and she was trembling so much that her teeth were chattering loudly, indicating that she had gone through a great deal of shock.

After questioning her, I discovered that Amber had taken Nathaniel to a bar, where they drank heavily, and she had told him things like she would marry him as long as he had a house.

After Nathaniel had too much to drink, he couldn't hold himself back, and he revealed the truth about his family's conspiracy to plot against Nadia.

It was revealed that the Prentiss family had been plotting to obtain our property for a while. They had even expressed their desire to Nadia multiple times to have us vacate the house and leave it to Nathaniel as a marital home.

Despite having a weak character, Nadia was firm in her decision to keep the house. It was a symbol of our family's hard work and dedication over the years, and as the children grew up, it would provide a sense of stability in our lives.
