Chapter 9 Friendly Fire

"Hello?"

After a long time of beeps, a familiar voice came over, and Sophia instantly rested her mind at ease.

The phone number had been engraved on her mind for seven years. They lost contact for so long that she was not sure if he still used the number. Fortunately, the line was through.

"Jim, it's me. When will you pick me up tomorrow?"

"Heh, what? Can't wait to see me?"

Sophia pursed her thin lips silently.

"Someone will reach you." After the phone was hung up, she collected herself and looked at Savage, "See?"

Savage kept changing countenance and forced a smile after quite some time, "I didn't expect your relationship. Ah... friendly fire, this is a misunderstanding. Someone, prepare a car and send Miss and Mr. Miller back."

"That won't be necessary, we can go by ourselves." Sophia interrupted him coldly and led Ethan out of the casino without looking back.

"Sophia..."

Outside, the rims of Ethan's eyes reddened. He clenched his fists and hesitated to speak.

Sophia sighed as she couldn't vent her spleen on such a pitiful kid.

Five years younger, Ethan was literally brought up by her. Back then, her mother had an accident and her father left without saying goodbye. The brother and sister had been depending on each other to survive. Therefore, she knew Ethan's personality better than anyone else.

"Say no more, Ethan, learn from this." Sophia held her brother by the shoulder. Her eyes glittered firmly, "But remember this, however poor we are, I will not let you do such illegal things."

"I see, Sophia, but mother's surgery fees..." Ethan hung his head, ashamed to continue.

"It's okay. Leave it to me, don't worry about it. Your task is to study hard and find a good job upon graduation. Then my task is done."

"But..." Ethan clenched his fists and pursed his thin lips tightly.

Jim Brown.

The name rang a bell. The man was his sister's ex-boyfriend and used to play in their house. Later, Ethan hadn't seen him again, and his sister just mentioned the man. Did they patch things up? Or..."

"Let's go, I'll take you to the hospital. Then you stay in my place for the night and go back to school tomorrow."

At the sight of his sister's anxious look, he swallowed back all his questions.

He was too weak to help with anything. But sooner or later, he would grow stronger and shield his sister from all the wind and rain.

In the meanwhile...

After hanging up the phone, Jim stood there still, leaned against the large floor-to-ceiling window, and looked at an old Nokia phone in his hand. His eyes glittered cold light.

It had been seven years, and he still kept the phone card, waiting for the woman to call him again.

Sophia was his only contact on this phone.

He waited for seven years. When the phone finally rang, it was under such a context.
