Chapter 5 You are one month pregnant

If time could be rewound, Jake wished to wager everything he possessed and return to that night three months ago.

That night, he was walking in on the street of New York with his older brother, discussing the future development direction of the Cabrera family.

Suddenly, they were attacked.

His older brother shielded him from the bullet that was destined for him, using his own flesh and body as a barrier.

Before his last breath, his brother mentioned that he had a girlfriend he deeply loved named Lilian.

Lilian was also carrying his child.

"Marry Lilian, live on for me, and for my sake, give Lilian and the child a complete family."

He could never forget the desperate look in his brother's eyes as he held his bloody hand and pleaded with him.

If time could be rewound, Jake would definitely push away his brother standing in front of him;

he would rather face death himself!

"You have defied your father for me and the child, and also harmed Miss Valdes.

I am genuinely feeling guilty about it... Perhaps, it's better to let it go!"

"I can live well raising the child on my own.

Even though being a single mother is tough, I can endure it for the sake of ensuring that my baby has a future!"

Lilian continued to sob.

She refused to believe that her strategy of retreating in order to advance could leave Jake indifferent.

Jake, with a stern expression, subtly distanced himself from Lilian.

"My father only had prejudices against you because he is unaware of the actual situation.

You should not take it to heart."

"Regarding Rhian ...." Jake paused for a moment and coldly said,

"I had no feelings for her from the beginning.

For four whole years, we've never even been intimate.

Even without you, I would divorce her."

"What about Miss. Valdez? She must love you very much, after all, you're so handsome and outstanding."

Lilian's voice was sweet and a little feminine, her eyes affixed to Jake with admiration.

Being an established socialite, she was just toying with the naive Johnson.

"She doesn't love me either."

Only then was Lilian completely reassured.

It seems that the couple was as rumored - no emotion between them, mutual disinterest and annoyance.

Divorce was only a matter of time.

She had no need to worry too much.

"In that case, Miss Valdes really has bad taste.

You're so handsome and outstanding, yet she does not love you.

Instead, it's my gain, like finding a treasure."

Lilian moved a little closer to Jake.

Listening to her words, Jake felt a sense of displeasure.

He annoyingly adjusted his tie.

"It's getting late, I'm leaving."

Upon hearing this, Lilian was anxious.

"Isn't this your home? Where are you going?"

Jake indifferently said, "I have another place to live in." "W-what?"

Lilian was stunned.

She was still hoping to live together with Jake, and gradually fall in love with him over time?

And he's leaving just like that?

No wonder, it's been four years, and Jake has never had a relationship with Rhian.

Rhian has been alone for four years, how tragic!

Rhian was discharged from the hospital three days ago.

Her recovery goes quite well. She was been charged from the hospital today.

Kyle insisted that her one-bedroom flat was too shabby, and made arrangements for her to have a new residency.

"Don't worry, Rhian, I know you're a low-profile person, so I chose a very low-key place for you."

That's what Kyle told her on the phone.

Upon arriving at the 300-meter river view duplex as per the given address, she was speechless.

A mansion that is worth several hundred million Dollars, is this considered low-key?

Just as Rhian was preparing to call Kyle and have him change the place, a call came in.

"Is this Miss. Rhian?

We're from destiny land Hospital, the test results from the other day are out, and there seems to be an abnormality.

Please come to the hospital as soon as possible."

Rhian arrived at the hospital with a nervous heart.

Upon seeing the medical report handed over by the nurse, she was dumbstruck.

"Miss Valdez, according to your blood test report, your HCG and progesterone levels are both elevated, which indicates that you are a month pregnant."

"What the... pregnant for a month?!"

"That's right. Congratulations, you're going to be a mom."

After the nurse left, Rhian remained in disarray, as if she were caught in a gust of wind.

Could it get any more melodramatic than this?

She had one lapse of judgment and ended up 'hit by the bolt', was it her fertility that was too powerful, or the swimmers of that guy were simply too speedy, why on earth was fate toying with her like this!

Without a doubt, the child was definitely from Jake that perennial iceberg.

She still remembers that night a month ago.

After the Cabrera family had finished handling Johnson's funeral, a gloomy atmosphere swallowed the entire house.

For the first time, Rhian saw Jake revealing his vulnerabilities like a child, crying with his face buried in his hands, drinking bottle after bottle of alcohol.

She felt his pain, and she cried with him and drank with him.

And then, they ended up in bed...

In their four years of marriage, that was the closest and most intimate they had been as a couple.

Rhian thought that after that night, her relationship with Jake might improve somewhat.

Who would have thought, instead of improvement, it simply came to an end.

The end would have been acceptable, but a sudden child entirely disrupted her original plans.

"Surely, pitying a man, brings bad luck for three lifetimes!"

With regret, Rhian wished to slap herself.

She hesitated as she considered telling Rhian about her pregnancy.

After all, the child was half his.

The decision to keep or let go, perhaps, should be made together?

"Miss Valdes, what a coincidence!

What brings you to the hospital too?"

From behind, came the voice of Lilian. As Rhian turned around, she saw Rhian supporting her waist and smiling radiantly.

Standing beside Lilian was her commissioner ex-husband, Jake.

The man remained as tall and handsome as ever, his face cold as ice, naturally emanating an air of nobility that made him stand out in the crowd.

Rhian froze, her heart pricking like a needle, a mild pain.

The sight of these two people standing together was truly perfect, like a pair thriving in warmth and love.

Moreover, whether it was a visual illusion or not, looking at Lilian's belly again, it seemed to be growing.

Rhian felt she was excessive, and the child in her womb was even more so.

"I'll just do a recheck and I won't bother you two anymore."

She smiled and waved at them in an artificially nonchalant manner.

In the end, she couldn't muster up the courage to tell Jake about her pregnancy.

After all, telling him would only bring her shame.

It might be better to keep it a secret, never letting him know and at least preserving some dignity.

The next second, her slender wrist was held in check by Jake's broad palm.

"You don't look well, what happened?"

Rhian met the man's eyes.

In the past, she would be lost in his deep, starry eyes.

But now, she only found it ridiculous.

"Whether I look well or not, it seems irrelevant to you, my soon-to-be ex-husband."

With just a few words, she made Jake frown, blazing with suppressed fury.

However, the usually aloof Jake of the Cabrera's family was acting strange today, relentlessly clinging to her.

"You said it yourself, I'm your soon-to-be ex-husband, not ex-husband yet."

Jake's cold gaze fell on the medical report in Rhian's hand, as he demanded in his usual assertive tone,

"What are you checking again? Let me see."
