Chapter 6 A Lifesaver

The little boy was lying on the ground. There were several small cuts on it. It was obvious that the shards from the broken windscreen had pierced his body. The deepest cut was on his neck.

The old man looked at Randall with expectant eyes when he saw him step forward. He uttered, "Are you a doctor? I need someone to assist me with the surgery. From the look of things, there's a glass fragment in my grandson's blood vessel."

Randall bent down to take a closer look at the boy.

As he stared at the bloodied neck, he used his mind eye to picture where exactly the shard of glass could possibly be. The middle section of the artery in the boy's neck appeared in his mind.

He had watched a video of Stewart performing a similar operation.

After a while, Randall concluded that the glass fragment was in this exact location.

It was scratching the blood vessel as it moved in the artery.

The scratching wasn't the most dangerous issue. The fact that the artery was close to the heart made the situation deadly. If the glass fragment got to the heart, the child would die.

It needed to be taken out immediately.

Randall was surprised that the old man was able to tell what was wrong in no time. He couldn't help staring at him.

He agreed to assist him with the surgery.

Just when they were about to get down to work, a provocative female voice came from behind. "Randall, have you lost your mind? You are handicapped, but you want to operate on the poor boy. Don't you know that you could damage his artery with that shaky hand of yours? Do you want him to bleed to death?"

The old man's face changed when he heard Tonya's words. He looked at Randall warily.

Perry said sarcastically, "Sir, you don't know him, do you?" This guy is an infamous loser in Herdale Medical School. His right hand trembles like he's suffering from Parkinson's disease. He's not fit to hold a scalpel, let alone operate on someone!"

As a doctor, the old man knew the importance of a stable pair of hands during surgery.

He knew that there was a high chance of his grandson dying if he allowed someone with an unstable hand to operate on him.

Staring daggers at Randall, the old man yelled, "Don't you have conscience or regard for the medical profession? Get the hell out of here!"

Randall had no choice but to pull back dejectedly.

He only wanted to help, but the old man told him off. He looked forward to seeing how Perry would perform now.

The old man's face softened when Perry moved forward. He said anxiously, "I'm a doctor. This is an emergency. A glass fragment is in my grandson's artery. However, the exact location can only be confirmed after cutting his neck open. Please assist me."

Perry's jaw dropped.

The boy's neck must be cut open?

And the glass was in the artery?

The old man wanted his assistance. No fucking way!

How could he perform such an operation without the right advanced equipment?

Perry had never been in this kind of position before. Worse still, he had no knowledge of it.

How then could he operate?

"Sir, I hate to say this, but I can't carry out the operation. It's way too dangerous."

Perry shook his head. He knew that if the boy died in his hands, it would be a stain on his budding medical career.

He never wanted such a thing to happen.

"You are such a fool, Randall! Why did you step forward to help this old man in the first place? You almost got me into trouble." Perry cussed Randall out under his breath.

Sensing that Perry wasn't going to help him because the surgery was dangerous, the old man said anxiously, "Don't worry. I'll take full responsibility if anything bad happens. Just help me."

Tonya pulled Perry back, unwilling to lend a hand despite the old man's pleas.

Perry looked away indifferently. He couldn't risk his career for a surgery with a low survival rate. He had dreams to become a legendary doctor.

The crowd soon began to criticize Perry and Tonya.

"They call themselves students from Herdale Medical School? Shame on them!"

"Doctors nowadays don't have regard for human lives. Most of them are only concerned about making money. The Hippocratic Oath doesn't mean a thing to them!"

"Cowards, they don't deserve to be doctors!"

The tongue-lashing infuriated Perry and Tonya. "Shut up, all of you! What do you know?"

With these words, the couple turned around to leave.

The old man knew that he couldn't wait any longer. He took out a scalpel from his backpack and prepared for the operation.

Out of pity, Randall piped up, "Sir, you aren't calm enough to perform the surgery. If you go ahead, your grandson might die even before you locate the shard of glass. Let me do it."

He just couldn't stand by and watch the boy die.

The old man looked at Randall and asked, "Aren't you afraid that something can go wrong? Why are you willing to take such a risk?"

"Life is all about taking risks Besides, I don't deserve to be a doctor if I can't take risks."

Randall squatted beside the boy again.

He quickly disinfected his hands and took the scalpel from the old man. With great skill, he cut open the boy's neck, revealing the affected artery.

Perry snorted in disdain. "Huh! Do you still think you are the genius of Herdale Medical School? Newsflash, idiot! You are just a disabled man who can't hold a scalpel well! How dare you show off?"

Tonya held on to her new boyfriend. "Baby, don't bother about this idiot. He would be in hot water once the boy dies in his hands."

The malicious couple had barely finished speaking when the crowd gasped in amazement.

"What? He fished it out so fast!"

The old man, like the other people, couldn't believe his eyes. "How is this possible? I have never seen anything like this!"

It was as if Randall had a microscopic vision. He spotted the glass fragment and took it out with ease. He then closed up the cut.

The entire process took less than a minute.

The boy's life was no longer hanging by a thread.
