Chapter 2 Three Years Of Loveless Marriage

Three years ago, Adeline's father failed in business and ended up buried under a mountain of debt. Many creditors came to demand the money. In order to pay off their debts as soon as possible, the Dawson family had no choice but to turn to the Clemons family for help, because the two families had made a deal years back to marry their kids. They hoped Adeline would marry Brendan, and the Clemons family would give them a huge amount of money to help them get through the crisis.

The Clemons family was rich and powerful, but Brendan Clemons was a notorious playboy.

Adeline had never met Brendan before, and there was another guy that she liked. At first, when her father asked her to marry Brendan, she refused. But then, her father had threatened her with her mentally ill mother. In the end, Adeline had no choice but to agree.

Before the wedding, the Clemons family and the Dawson family had arranged for Adeline and Brendan to meet.

Adeline was very reluctant to come to the home of the Clemons family.

That day, the sun was shining brightly. When Adeline saw Brendan for the first time, his eyes were filled with impatience. But he still looked so attractive. He reminded her of Romeo from that classic love story.

As Brendan walked closer to her, Adeline felt her heart race and her palms turn wet. She didn't expect that her future husband was the same guy she'd had a crush on for many years.

She could still remember their first conversation during that quiet afternoon. Overjoyed, she said to him, "Hello. I'm Adeline Dawson, your future wife."

In response to her, Brendan scoffed. Sitting on the sofa with his long legs crossed, he said coldly, "Adeline Dawson? Whatever. To tell you the truth, my grandpa is seriously ill and bedridden. He wants to have a great-grandchild before he passes on. If he were in excellent health, I wouldn't have married you. My family will give your family a sum of money to solve your problems. But after we get married, we are only to be husband and wife in name. Don't expect me to love you and care for you. Your task is just to produce an heir for the Clemons family. Is that clear?"

Looking into his cold, emotionless eyes, Adeline knew that he didn't like her.

But he was still Brendan Clemons, the man she loved.

This was the only way to get close to him.

She married him with hope.

She would try her best. She would be nice to him and love him. Maybe someday he would develop some feelings for her.

However, it turned out that she had been incredibly wrong.

In the past three years, she had devoted all her heart to him. She got up early every morning to prepare breakfast for him. She did everything for him, but in return, he treated her like a speck of dust.

He didn't remember her birthday or their wedding anniversary. When the elders celebrated their birthdays and they were supposed to show up at the parties together, he never came. There was a time when she had a stomachache so bad that she could only shiver and wince. When she called him, he only told her over the phone, "I'm very busy right now. Don't call me if there's nothing urgent."

Then, he hung up.

At that time, she struggled to get to the hospital by herself. She signed her own hospital papers and hired a nurse to look after her. After she was discharged from the hospital, she returned home alone. Brendan never bothered to ask where she had been. She wasn't even sure he noticed that she hadn't been home for days.

However, he cared for Tiffany Clemons a lot.

He arranged every trivial matter for her.

When Adeline got married to Brendan, she met Tiffany, Brendan's sister-in-law. Brendan, his elder brother Lance, and Tiffany were childhood friends and they grew up together.

Both Brendan and his brother fell in love with Tiffany, but Tiffany chose Lance in the end. Later, they got married and moved abroad. But unfortunately, Lance met an accident not too long after and was seriously injured. Since then, he had been in poor health.

Sadly, Lance passed away weeks ago. Brendan went abroad to bring home his brother's ashes. He also took Tiffany back with him and gave her one of his apartments for her to live in.

Every time anything at all happened to Tiffany, Brendan went to see her right away.

They were always together as if they were a real couple while Adeline, Brendan's legal wife, was like a stranger to him.

Adeline had been comforting herself that Tiffany was just Brendan's sister-in-law. Brendan would never have an affair with her.

However, one day, she received a photo from Tiffany. In it, Brendan had an apron on and was cooking in the kitchen. Adeline had been married to Brendan for three years, and not once did he prepare a meal for her.

Adeline didn't want to believe it, so she decided to pay Tiffany a visit.

It was Brendan who opened the door for her. Wearing a simple white shirt, he stood at the door. He looked at her and asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"

His tone was full of disgust. He spoke to her as if her mere presence had already ruined his entire day.

Tiffany was standing behind him, and she only had a bath towel wrapped around her body. Tiffany winked at Adeline with a mischievous smirk.

Adeline stared at the scene in front of her. She couldn't believe it.

Tiffany was Brendan's sister-in-law. How could she be in the same room as him dressed like that?

Adeline waited for her enraged tears to come, but she felt absolutely nothing. She thought she'd be angry seeing Brendan and Tiffany in such a situation, but she was calm.

Perhaps it was because Brendan had disappointed her so many times that she'd just lost all hope. It was over. She turned around and went home.
