Chapter 4 Being Late

PABLO

"You got the job, just as I had told you!' Miguel exclaimed and I laughed.

"Yes, I did but the rules of that company are dark. Imagine having to work in a graveyard filled with people but you also have to play dead." I complained as my thoughts went back to the interview.

"That," he paused "My dear brother, doesn't matter since you're not the only one working there." He stated while throwing on a polo over his bare chest, "All that mattered right now is that after six months of working so hard as an ant and getting paid peanuts and extra two months of joblessness, you have got yourself a job at a renowned company." He said, smiling at me.

He seemed more excited about my job than I was, however, I owed everything to him and his family as well for having me all these years and even having me back after life happened to me.

"Where do you suggest we go?" I asked him, seeing that it was Sunday evening and it wouldn't cause any harm if we just hung out a little.

"Uhm...I've been thinking," he began, "How about we just shop for new clothes and as many aprons as possible or go out for a drink or two. Bills on you brother!" He said before snapping his finger and winking at me.

"You're such a prat," I teased, "Let's go then but..." I stopped upon remembering something, "My car is not fixed yet." I sighed, trying to get an excuse.

"Oh...I got that fixed already." He said proudly.

My mouth formed an 'o', "I see." But deep down in me, I honestly didn't want to go and I hope he sees reasons with me why I didn't want to, "Miguel, can we go some other day, my first day at work is tomorrow and having a hangover is not a way to show how professional I am." I told him but he frowned instead.

"C'mon now, nothing you say is going to change my mind, not now, not ever." He said in a firm voice before dragging me by the hand out of his house.

"Wait !" I pleaded but he didn't listen, "Where are we going?" I asked but he ignored me.

"When we get there, you'd see." He said under his voice, letting go of my arm and inserting the car key into the keyhole while I stood by the other door waiting for him.

-

Ow, why do I feel so awful? My head hurts, my eyes as well. What am I even thinking? My entire body is in gruesome pain and the ray of sunlight hitting my face isn't helping at all.

Come to think of it, the sun seems too hot. The sun? Jesus Christ! I shot open my eyes and everywhere was bright and my heart began to beat in a random painful and scary manner. I quickly took my eyes to the large round wall clock and sat on the bed the moment I saw the time.

My head hurt so bad due to how fast I sat up and it made me support my head with my free hand.

"Oh my God!" I yelled upon remembering that I had to go to work, "Miguel!" I hissed, recalling how he made me take shots last night at the club. He couldn't even get me to wake up as he had promised.

I rushed out of the bed to get to the bathroom but hit the little toe on my foot on the edge of the bed, tripping in the process and causing a loud thud.

"Oww," I grunted, sitting up on the floor and rubbing my hand on the toe that was hurt. It hurts like hell. I managed to get on my foot and limped into the bathroom for a quick bath.

"How could I have let him pull me into that?" I asked myself running out of the shower after my bath.

I put on a black tuxedo suit that I purchased the previous day, thanks to Miguel and grabbed my bag containing my laptop before brushing my thick jet black hair using my left hand.

After I was done, I picked my shoes up and dashed out of my room to the stairs. I would dress up properly in my car.

"Good mor-"

"Get behind me!" I yelled at Miguel before he could finish off his greeting and began to run out of the house to get to my car.

Luckily, I managed to get all dressed before igniting the car. I was driving as fast as I could on the road. This is frustrating!

After driving for about thirty more minutes, I got to the company and lucky enough, there was an empty spot in the parking lot and I quickly fixed my car into it.

I pushed open the car door and grabbed my bag from it. I ran like a mad man into the building.

"Pablo," I heard someone say my name in a hushed voice and turned to the direction of the voice to see my interviewer standing in a corner and she signalled that I come to her which I did.

"What is it?" I asked raising a brow and a stupid thought played in my mind. What if she tells me that the job was a joke?

"You're late!" She whisper-yelled in frustration, throwing her hands in the air.

"I'm sorry, I went ou..." There's no way I'm telling her I drank last night. Clearing my throat, I adjusted my hold on my bag, "I had so...I had issues with my car." I lied and brushed over my tie.

"You should go to your office bef-"

"Vivienne," I heard a feminine voice yell followed by the clicking sound of heels hitting in a slow rhythmical manner and some of the staff who were around scurried in fear to their offices.

"That's the CEO," Vivienne whispered, "The kitchen is down there, your assistant chef would put you through. I need to go." She said and began to walk but suddenly stopped to give me a once over, "You're quite overdressed." She said before walking away.

I looked at my suit and shrugged but was going to leave when I saw her standing with a very slim lady who had her brown hair tied up so tight that I feared it would hurt. I couldn't see her face as her back was to me but seeing the length of her red heels and how sharp their edges are, I could almost tell what kind of person she was.

"And what are you doing there?" The lady's face was towards me and her brown eyes shot daggers at me and I froze

"Get lost and go to your office!" She hissed, her voice holding so much venom and I gulped before hurrying away. She looked scary, No, she was scary. She had an oval face with a sharp jawline and the area around her eyes looked darker. Almost darker than the black plain trouser she wore below a blue longsleeved shirt which she tucked into it.

She looked like something from Halloween.

She looked cold, too cold for a woman. I must say, she caused an unpleasant shiver to run down my spine.
