Chapter 4 Ch 4.

Perry's pov

Cool breeze blew past me, causing me to shiver slightly. I look up to the sky to see has changed to dark grey a promise that it's going to rain soon.

Well, lucky for me, my house is just a few poles away from here, if I hasten my steps a little bit, I'll arrive home in no time.

I was deeply buried in my own thoughts, but the sounds of sirens pulled me back to reality.

A frown crept onto my face, when I saw an ambulance taking the curve that led to my apartment.

On instincts, I ran after it immediately. After running for a few minutes, I caught up with it and by then it's already parked outside my home.

Nurses were rushing about, a few of them rushed inside my home and pushed someone out on a stretcher.

Soon after, my mom rushed out too, holding onto a male nurse and shouting.

"Please, save my husband, save my husband, I beg you"

I rushed towards her and pulled her away from the nurse, she wanted push me away and grabbed the nurse again.

"Mom, what's going on?" I asked.

She paused when she heard my voice, she stared at my face and quickly hugged me, then started crying on my shoulder.

"Mom, talk to me, what's going on?" I asked her again, but she didn't answer me, she was just crying.

The nurse tapped my shoulder and I gave him my attention, he smiled politely at me.

"Nurse, can you tell me what's going on?"

"We don't know what's going on for now, miss. We only received a call from your mom, so we rushed over and found out your dad's lost consciousness..."

"Lost consciousness?"

Wait, does he mean by saying he's lost consciousness? Is he trying to say dad's dead?

But he was alright when I left the house for work this morning, he was very healthy.

"Take it easy, miss" he said when he noticed my worried expression. "Your dad is gonna be fine, I don't think he's in a very bad condition"

My gaze shifted towards dad, he's just laying still on the stretcher, as if he's dead.

Seeing him in that state, an unknown fear suddenly gripped me and different bad thoughts clouded my mind.

"Put your mind at ease for now, we're gonna be taking him to the hospital for treatment and we'd like you to come with us" he said.

"You mean we should come with you in the ambulance?" I asked him.

"Yeah"

I looked at my mom, she's a crying mess and isn't in the right state to go with them in the ambulance.

If we go with them, she would just cry along the way and might even do something rash, it's best we follow up in a cab. I faced the nurse.

"You go on, we'll follow up in a cab" I told him.

"Alright, miss" he replied and rushed back to the ambulance, they drove off immediately he got in.

Mom pulled away from me immediately she heard the ambulance leaving, she wanted to chase after them but I was fast enough to stop her.

"Let me go, they're taking your dad away! Let's go after them!" she said, struggling to get away from me.

"Mom, calm down, they're just taking him to the hospital for treatment" I told her.

"But..."

"He's fine, he's not dead yet, he's fine"

She shook her head.

"It's just his asthma acting up again, it's his asthma"

"I know, mom, I know" I agreed with her.

Mom doesn't know dad's being lying to her about his condition, dad's not an asthmatic patient, he's suffering from a far more deadly disease.

He just doesn't want us to worry, so he lied to us about his condition.

If I hadn't come across his medical report by accident, I'd be like mom right now, I'd believe he's just an asthmatic patient.

"He said it's just an asthma, let's go after them and tell them"

"Don't worry, we'll go after them in a cab"

"Then get the cab, we can't just stay here!"

I sighed deeply.

This is exactly why I didn't let us go with them, she's just too sentimental sometimes.

I'm just wondering what's gonna happen to her, when she finds out dad lied about his health.

★★★

Intensive care unit (ICU)

Mom's been pacing restlessly outside the ICU since we arrived, 30minutes ago. Her eyes has never left the doors for a second.

It's obvious she's very worried, she'd rush to any nurse that comes out from there and ask about dad's current situation, but none of them were giving any reasonable response.

I'm worried too, I mean, knowing how critical my dad's condition was, it's just making me scared for his life.

"Perry, do you think your dad's condition is that serious?" Mom asked me.

"I..."

"It's just his asthma acting up, they're not supposed to waste so much time in there, right?"

I sighed and got up, I walked closer to her and led her back to the bench I was sitting. I sat her down and cleared my throat.

"Mom, you have to calm down or you're gonna give yourself a hypertension" I told her.

"I'm calm right now, I just want to know what's going on, but nobody is telling me anything" she said.

My eyes moved towards the doors, it's still tightly shut and staring at it just makes my heart beat fast, so many what ifs rushed to my mind.

What if he doesn't wake up after every efforts made to save him?

What if he wakes up and doesn't remember anything?

No, wait, it's not his head that's injured.

"Why are they taking so much time?" Mom's question brought me back to reality.

"He's gonna be fine, mom, dad's a strong man" I told her.

She reached for my hand and smiled weakly, her eyes were still focused on the doors.

"Yes, he's a strong man" she said.

It's very obvious to me why dad didn't let her know about his health, she'd just worry herself to death.

My head snapped towards the doors when I heard them opening, mom and I sprang up at once and rushed towards them.

Two nurses were pushing dad out on a stretcher, he's already awake now.

Mom and I rushed to him.

"Dad"

"Marco!" I and mom called respectively.

Dad looked at us with a very weak smile, he reached out and touched mom's cheek, he wiped her tears which I somehow didn't notice before.

"Honey, why are you crying?" Dad asked her.

"You...you...you..."

Mom couldn't talk, she just choked on her tears.

Dad chuckled lightly.

"I'm fine, honey, don't cry, I hate it when you cry" he said.

Their love is just so sweet, I was hoping I'd have this kind of love too, but unfortunately I'm cursed not to have it.

"Princess" dad called me.

"Dad" I gave him my attention.

"Go on, tell your mom not to worry about me, tell her how strong your daddy is" he said, gesturing towards mom who's still crying.

I smirked.

"She's your business now, I've done my part when you were in there" I told him.

He rolled his eyeballs, then faced mom and started whispering somethings to her. I shuddered at how intimate they are right now, and turned away from them.

"Are you Miss Marco?"

A man in white coat asked me, he must be the doctor since he's hanging a stethoscope around his neck.

"Yes, I am" I answered.

He nodded and turned to the nurses pushing dad's stretcher.

"Take Mr Marco to his ward" he told them.

"What? Ward?!" Mom exclaimed, she quickly turned towards the doctor. "Why are you taking him to a ward? Isn't he supposed to go back home?" she asked.

"Mrs Marco, your husband's condition isn't as simple as he makes you believe"

The doctor paused and glanced at dad, I also glanced at him, he looked away when he realized we're all staring at him.

"Mrs Marco, Miss Marco, please come with me to my office" the doctor said.

"Alright" I replied.

The doctor faced the nurses and signaled them to take dad to his ward, which they did immediately.

"Marco..." Mom muttered.

I threw an arm around her shoulders and hugged her sideways.

"Mom, he's fine, let's hear what the doctor has to say"

She sighed and nodded, I raised an eyebrow at the doctor, silently telling him to lead the way.

"This way, please" he said.
