Chapter 4 Being Embarrassed

Abigail's sudden arrival had surprised everyone in the company, and they all knew that it was Oliver who had arranged the position for her.

The Gates Family had never had a girl in their three generations, except for the daughters-in-law who had married into the family. Abigail's surname was White but not Gates. Then what had made Oliver attach so much importance to a woman outside his family? People could not think of any other possibility except for her taking advantage of her beauty.

Abigail was surprised to know how she was perceived by others.

Abigail blew her bangs. Over the last few days, she had been so focused on work that she did not realize that her colleagues were gossiping about her like this.

Instead of defending herself, she curled up her lips, revealing an innocent, sweet smile.

"Your guess is right. I am here because of my personal relationship. You know what? I deserve it."

Her calm and relaxed expression made Lily look like a shrew.

Without waiting for Lily to freak out, she picked up the files and elegantly walked out of the office.

Upon seeing the other woman's graceful, departing back, Lily stomped her feet in anger and felt that she was going crazy.

"Well, I'll see how long you can be proud of yourself!" A hint of a sneer appeared in Lily's eyes, and she gritted her teeth tightly.

...

Fifteen minutes later, Abigail arrived at the conference room.

She knocked on the glass door.

Abigail did not enter the room until someone inside granted permission. The moment she stepped inside, she read the pressure floating in the air.

She paused her pace for a second.

After getting seated in the chair assigned for the director of the finance department, she instantly became aware that the pair of gloomy eyes of the man sitting in the primary seat was staring at her.

Impulsively, she clenched her hands under the conference desk, and a thin layer of sweat quickly soaked her palms. Even though she was feeling panicked, she managed to wear a calm, indifferent expression.

"How come I haven't been notified that the CFO has been replaced?" George asked, staring at Abigail as if he wanted to tear her up.

"Sir, Director White has been appointed directly by your grandfather," Julia Reed, the secretary, bent down to explain to the man in a low voice.

Julia initially thought that Oliver must have asked the president's permission before appointing Abigail as the director of the finance department, a significant position that not everybody could hold.

At the secretary's words, the look in George's eyes turned extremely cold, giving off a chilly vibe.

Being acutely aware that the president was getting mad, Julia took a step back for fear that she would get hurt by accident.

And what she had expected then happened.

"Director White?" George taunted Abigail and then grabbed the folder in front of him to throw it at her.

At the sudden eruption of George's wrath, everyone presented widened their eyes open in shock and did not know what to do.

The files within the folder fell like snowflakes.

The edge of the blue folder happened to hit against Abigail's injured forehead. The sharp pain made the woman shed two strings of tears in an instant.

However, in George's eyes, she was just pretending to be pitiful. Then, he said in a ruthless tone of voice, "What an incapable director you are! Do you have any idea how much loss the flawed statements that your department had given almost caused to the company?"

If he had not found that some figures about the multinational cooperation case were wrong and corrected them in time, the company would suffer a huge amount of loss if the contract had been signed wrongly.

It was the Gates Group's first case in Eastern Europe.

Fortunately, the mistake had been avoided, and the company did not have to suffer a loss.

Therefore, why had George become so angry and even thrown that folder at Abigail in public? Abigail knew that the man had another purpose.

Tamping down the soreness in her heart and adjusting her hair to hide the wound on her forehead, Abigail gritted her teeth and forced back the painful tears.

"I'm sorry." Without defending herself, she unfolded the files she had brought as if nothing had happened. "President Gates, may I present the financial analysis now?"

She had joined the company for only eight days. The budget statement George had carried during his trip was from the former director Lily. It had nothing to do with Abigail.

However, Abigail had no intention to explain. In fact, she knew that the man understood that it was not her fault. He just wanted to embarrass her with that as an excuse. No matter what she was going to say, the words could only amplify his disgust against her.
