Chapter 3 The Literal Meaning

Abigail refused the older man with a smile, "I'm not going. Good luck to you and Uncle James."

She had also taken drugs last night and was suffering from a headache, probably due to the side effects of the medication. Thus, she planned to go to the hospital later.

"Okay, stay home and wait for our good news." Grandfather Oliver did not mean to invite the woman. Therefore, he was fine with her refusal.

After breakfast, Abigail fetched the fishing gear for Oliver. The older man took it with a smile, looked at the woman's delicate, elegant appearance, and said in a warm tone of voice, "Good girl. Your meek nature is the best trait I like about you."

At the words, Abigail dropped her eyes, smiled lightly, and did not say anything.

In fact, the reason why Oliver had chosen Abigail to be the wife of his grandson, George, was that she was the adoptive daughter of the Grey Family, who had nothing and no one to count on, and thus had to be resigned and obedient.

Abigail thought that she had been doing well in the Gates Family over the past more than two years and that Grandfather Oliver's fondness for her should have come from that. However, on this day, she eventually realized that what Oliver cared most was the great-grandchild of the Gates Family.

That was why he had drugged the couple.

After a pause, Oliver added, "If you are staying home, you may take the time to get ready for beginning your work at the Gates Group from tomorrow. I've arranged a job for you there. You and George have been married for almost three years. You two have to be together to cultivate your relationship."

With that, he got into the car.

Abigail stood still for a good while, being dumbfounded. Then, she took a light sigh and slightly pursed her lips. It seemed that her easy time was going to end.

The Gates Group occupied a leading position in the food and nutrition industry in City A. Everyone in the city knew George.

He took over the place of the president at the age of eighteen and popularized the products of the group all over the country when he was twenty. Currently, he was trying to expand the market to an international level. Simply speaking, all the entrepreneurs, elder or younger, had a good opinion of him.

After the night he and Abigail had sex, George left the country on business. When he came back, Abigail had worked at the Gates Group for eight days following Oliver's arrangement.

Abigail folded the financial statements, pinched the place between her brows, feeling slightly irritated.

She had just joined the Gates Group for days. How could she possibly get so many complicated tasks done in a short period?

Over the last seven days, she worked overtime every day and eventually cleared up the financial statements for the previous six years.

"Director, President Gates is calling a meeting in fifteen minutes. I hope that you've got your statements ready." Lily Wood, the former director of the finance department, stood in the doorway, waiting to gloat over Abigail's misfortune.

As Abigail had been arranged into the position of the director of the finance department all of a moment, none of her colleagues felt comfortable about that.

"In fifteen minutes? Why didn't anyone tell me about it earlier?" Abigail lifted her eyes, frowning.

She then thought to herself, "It is the fifteenth of this month. Shouldn't the quarterly financial analysis meeting be held at the end of the month as always?"

"Also, I heard that George would not return until early next month."

Lily shrugged and replied in a sarcastic voice, "Sorry, I didn't know until a moment ago. Miss White, don't forget you're the director. I'm sure you'd be able to handle any difficulty head-on. Right?"

In fact, she had got the notice last Wednesday but deliberately had not notified Abigail to see the latter make a fool of herself.

In Lily's eyes, Abigail was nothing but a shameless bitch who had taken away the position of the director in virtue of her beauty.

At the thought that Abigail had stolen her place in the company, Lily wanted to destroy the woman's face.

Abigail was clear about Lily's tricks. She lowered her head to pack up the statements, shaking her head and saying, "No wonder you've been demoted from the director to the assistant..."

In fact, during the handover work, Lily had intentionally inserted some useless documents in those folders to prolong Abigail's working time and to complicate the difficulty.

At Abigail's words, Lily flew into a rage like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "Abigail White, what do you mean?"

Abigail lifted her head and raised her brows. "I mean what it literally means."

Lily rushed over to the desk and banged it.

With flames of fury surging up in her eyes, she roared, "Abigail, don't be so arrogant. You have no qualifications nor real skills, but how have you become the director? I think everybody knows! Listen to me, a workplace is not where you can cope with ease in virtue of your flesh. Your snotty tricks on men are not going to help you here!"
