Chapter 6 Six

Amanda placed her hands on her chin as she fixed her gaze on the small frame on her table. It was a picture she took with her husband on their wedding day. She still vividly remembered that day like it happened yesterday.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Daniel said as he knocked on the table twice.

"When did you come in, D? How are you?" Amanda asked as she placed her hands down and started searching for a file.

"Long enough to see you brooding by this time. You should get busy with work. So unusual for a workaholic to be unethical at work," Daniel said as he unbuttoned his grey jacket and sat on the chair slowly.

"Nothing, D. It's just that I...I'm okay anyways. Just some little things here and there," Amanda replied as she looked away.

"Yeah. Some things here and there which I'm still an outsider to understand, right?" Daniel asked.

"Not that, Dan! I'm just having a bad day. Sort of," She said as she lowered her lashes.

"Is it Michael? Did he do something wrong this time around?" He asked as he peered into her eyes.

Amanda tried to avoid his peering eyes. She had been best friends with Daniel Clark all her life. Since they moved into a new neighborhood after her mother died, she had been friends with Dan. She remembered he was a crybaby who was always quiet and cried his ass out at every touch in kindergarten. That crybaby was now a billionaire with multiple assets under his name.

They had gone to high school together and graduated from college the same year. Daniel was the only son out of three children of the Clarks'. His father, John Clark was the Regional head of West Fargo Bank in California. And his mother, Sam was a professor in veterinary science.

The Clarks' took her like their own and cared for her. Not because she lost her mother at a very early age but because they grew fond of her and her strong willed spirit. Charlotte and May, Daniel's sisters took her like family.

Amanda looked at the brown-haired young man in front of her who was once a crybaby before he grew to a strong teenager who defended and protected her from bullies and silly boys in high school. Even guided and helped her heal through her heartbreaks. Now he was still concerned about her marriage and if she was fine.

"Best friends for life!" She said in her mind as she smiled.

"What's the smile for? Oh, he is still the sweet husband you brag about right?" Daniel said.

"Oh no, Daniel! Don't do that, D!" Amanda replied.

"So what's wrong, Mandy? Why the sad look?" Daniel asked.

There was silence in the office. Amanda didn't reply and Daniel stared at her.

"It's okay if you don't want to tell me about it. I won't bother you about it. But it's not too late to open up if it's about your marriage," Daniel said.

"I thought you would actually grow to like my husband. But you never seem to settle down with it. Come on, D. Just be friends with him," Amanda persuaded.

"I'm friends with him, Mandy. I just don't know. I don't think I like his vibes. But we are good. He makes you happy and that's what everyone wants".

"Really?"

"Yes. You deserve every thing good, my child. Can I get something to eat or munch on?" Daniel said as he smiled sheepishly.

"You're crazy! I'm married and you have no right to order me around like that, Mr. Clark," Amanda chuckled as she stood up and headed to the door.

"You haven't told me why you were brooding when I entered. If it isn't about Michael, then what happened?".
