Chapter 4 My parents

I opened my eyes slowly and the first thought that came to me was "Where am I?".

I turned to the other side of the bed and saw a window. It was already bright outside.

"Its morning already?."Hey since when did planes have beds? I thought to myself.

I slowly sat up right on my bed and saw my mom beside my bed, her head gently resting on my grey duvet. It then all came back. We were no longer on the plane. We had landed at least fifteen hours ago. We were in our new house in London.

"But why is ma in my room?", I thought again.

I stood up from my bed and then immediately came a throbbing headache. I held my head as I tried to gain control of my balance. The headache brought with it a wave of memories, memories of last night, proving that it wasn't a dream. I immediately spotted the shattered glass on the ground and the scattered pills. I gritted my teeth in frustration. Why does this always have to happen. Why couldn't I have one peaceful night of sleep. Right on cue, my head began pounding again.

"Oh Lord krishna" I cried out silently. I turned to look at my mom. She looked worn out. She probably didn't get enough sleep since last night and it was all my fault. I had made her worry, I had made her stay up all night.

I had always troubled her. I felt so sorry for my mom.

I picked up the blanket from my bed and gently dropped it over my mom. I mentally decided to go over to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. That was the least that I could do for her. First I had to brush and take a quick bath before going to the kitchen.

As I walked down the stairs, I suddenly realised that I hadn't seen dad since last night."Where is he? I thought. I got off the stairs and moved into the kitchen. I looked round the kitchen, trying to see if there was anything that I could make. It turned out that there were no ingredients. I checked the fridge and I found some briyani in a container. There was a note attached to the container. It was from mom.

It read: please heat it up and eat avni.

I smiled at the note as I brought out the container with my other hand. I really loved my mom. She was literally the best mom ever.

I heated up the food, dished it out and took it over to the dinning. I sat down and began to fiddle with my food. I wasn't hungry but I had to eat so that I could take my medicine. I had just taken a few bite when I saw my mom come down the stairs and came over to me.

"Avni darling" my mom called. I made to stand up but she insisted that I stayed seated

"Sit down Avni, Don't get up". She came over to the dinning table and took a seat by me.

"Good morning Ma"

"Good morning dear. How are you feeling now?"

"I am alright ma" I told her with a smile.

"That's good." she said with folded hands in prayer.

"By the way ma, where is father? I asked curiously.

"I am heeere" a voice sang. Mom and I both turned and we both saw dad coming into the house. We both got up and went to hug him.

"How are my queen and princess doing? He asked with a cheeky smile

"We are doing just fine father" I told him as I hugged him again.

"Where have you been Ramesh? my mom demanded

"Come on divya. Why are you getting angry? Why don't you give me another hug, my darling?" My dad sang sweetly with a smile.

"You want a hug? I"ll give you a slap instead. You left us all by ourselves the moment we arrived here. Tell me, who does that?" Mom scolded.

"Mom you can scold father later. At least let him sit down". Dad shot me a greatful look and I shot a "you owe me one" look back.

We all went to sit down on the big arm chair in the sitting room.

"So where were you Ramesh? Mom demanded

"I had to go look at our new branch here in London. I also had to meet with some business partners and tend to some important documents" dad explained

"So they were more important than your family? Mom asked emotionally

"Divya....

"C'mon ma. You know that dad didn't mean that. Let's just forgive him this once" I pleaded. Mom looked at me and then at my dad who gave her a beautiful smile. She smiled back and then said "okay fine, but just this once".

"I know this is shameless but can-I-uhm perhaps get some food? Dad asked sheepishly. I laughed while mom responded.

"There are no ingredients at home for us to cook with. That is why we are going shopping!"

"C'mon divya. I am too tired to go shopping" dad complained.

"Then I guess you'll also be too tired to eat when we do prepare the food", mum shot back with a smirk.

My dad had a sorry look on his face which made me burst into laughter.

In my house, my mom usually calls the shots around here to my dad's dismay. I don't blame him. My mom can be really scary when she wants to and blackmailing is a breeze to her. Those times were never good.

"Good, meet me outside in ten!". My mom shouted like an excited child back as she walked back upstairs to get changed

My dad and I exchanged quirky looks as he laid back down with a huge sigh

I though to myself, "after all I didn't get them married" with a smile on my face.
