Chapter 5 The Exorcism

Over the next week, we met up at Bishop Paul's church so that the demon can't hear what we are planning this time. Our new idea was almost like our last one except for the fact everyone would be in their rooms monitoring the house from their tablets, except for me I would be the bait again. But before our plan even got off the ground we hit a glitch. "I don't have one of those tablet things you guys are talking about let alone know how to use one of them," Bishop Paul stated. With Cindy being, well Cindy this didn't sit well with her. "What do you mean you don't have a tablet," She exclaims.

"How do you get any work done," Bishop Paul being the kind-hearted soul, didn't make her freak out to heart, he just looked over at her with the biggest smile on his face and said. "With one of 41 those old dinosaur desktop computers my dear," Cindy just stood there with a dumbfounded look on her face that made all of us burst out laughing. It was nice to finally laugh like that again, it had been too long. Zane had gone and bought the Bishop his own tablet and even showed him how to use it, and thankfully he was a fast learner because that night the demon struck again. We had all just gotten settled in for the night when I had heard something outside of my bedroom door. Luckily we had a camera in the air vent in the hallway pointing toward my bedroom. I quietly reach over and grab my tablet from my bedside table just in time to see Brett reaching over to turn the doorknob. I lay back in the bed pretending to be asleep while telling myself that it wasn't my love at the door but the demon. As the demon came into the room, I slowly pulled out the taser that I had hidden under my pillow. I took a deep breath as Brett came over and started to kiss my cheek. I quickly reached up and zapped him in the neck, knocking him back as he let out a mournful scream that wasn't Brett's voice. Brett's body laid on the floor, everybody barged into the room after being woken up. "Sparky are you ok," Cindy yelled as she pushed her way through my bedroom door, then stopped when she saw Brett's body lying unconscious on the floor. "I'm ok, just a little shaken up," I answer as Bishop and Zane make their way into the room."Dear lord is he dead!" Bishop Paul exclaimed. "No, he is just knocked out cold," I laugh as I hold up my stun gun," We picked up Brett's body and carried it back down to the basement where Bishop Paul decided that we should go ahead and do the exorcism none of us knew if Brett would be able to survive or not since he had been possessed for so long. Cindy and Zane sat on either side of Brett holding his arms while I stood back at Bishop Paul's request. He began with the Saint Michael prayer as he sprinkles holy water on Brett. Then he starts saying the Litany Of The Saints "Lord, have mercy," Bishop Paul starts. Then we repeat after him. "Lord, have mercy." Bishop Paul keeps going and we keep repeating him. "Christ, have mercy, Lord, have mercy, Christ, hear us." Then we say "Christ, graciously hear us." Bishop: "God, the Father in heaven." All: "Have mercy on us." Bishop: "God, the Son, Redeemer of the world." All. "Have mercy on us." Bishop: "Holy Trinity, one God." All: "Have mercy on us." Then we all say "Holy Mary, pray for us." Bishop Paul starts calling the Angels, Archangels, Apostles, Prophets, and Holy Patriarchs. "All holy saints of God intercede for us and be merciful deliver this man from Satan." He says as he draws a cross of oil on his forehead. Brett's eyes shot open except they weren't his beautiful blue eyes, but eyes that were black as coal. "You can try to get rid of me all you want, but know this I'll always return until I get what I want," The demon snarled, then looked over at me as he licked his lips and then burst out laughing hideously. As the demon lifted one finger the nail on it grew long and sharp, before we realized what the demon was about to do it slit Brett's throat. We all stood back in shocked silence, not knowing what to do or say as we had just witnessed the most horrific thing ever. What had we just done? While everyone went back upstairs to call the police and coroner I sat in silence, staring at the body of the man that I had dearly loved, the man that I had promised to protect and failed. I finally felt the tears rolling down my cheeks just as the coroner came down and officially announced Brett's death at 3:00 am. One of the police officers was speaking to me, but I couldn't make out what he was saying. I stayed seated on the cold, hard, concrete basement floor watching them put my beloved onto a gurney, then zip him up inside the black bag as if I was in a dream. "Sparky, honey, you really should come upstairs and eat something," Cindy said sweetly. "You have been down here since yesterday and we're all worried about you," It was all I could do to nod my head in agreement as I am about to try and stand up. I feel two strong arms on either side of me helping me up. I smile as I look to my left to see Bishop then to my right to see Zane. We make it up the stairs into the kitchen where they sit me in a chair. Cindy comes over with a bowl of oatmeal for me to eat. "Please Sparky, you need to eat something to keep your strength up," She pleads. I finish eating my oatmeal, then take myself a long hot shower slowly I start feeling a little bit better. Instead of going into the living room with the others, I head to bed, for one I wasn't up to hearing a pep talk from anybody. A few hours later there was a tap on my bedroom door and Zane stuck his head in. "Hey Sparks just wanting to see if you needed anything," He asked, trying to hide the concern in his voice to no avail. "Yeah, I'm all good for now, thanks for asking," I say. "By chance are you busy tomorrow morning," Zane looks at me then comes into my room and sits on the corner of my bed "Sure I'm free what do you need me to do,"

"I need you to help me look for another house to move into," I explain. "I can't live in this house anymore, I have already lost two people I've dearly loved in this house. I can't lose anyone else,"

"I'll be ready to leave first thing in the morning and we can start looking," When I awoke the next morning I realized that it was still dark out so I rolled over to see the time. "Ugh, only four o'clock in the morning," I groaned aloud. "I can't believe I've only been asleep for an hour." I decided to go ahead and head downstairs to the kitchen for a cup of coffee and some breakfast. Around seven I see Bishop Paul coming down the stairs with his suitcase in tow. "Good morning Bishop," I say with a yawn."Are you leaving today," He pours him a cup of coffee as he sits down at the table with me? "Sadly, I am Sparky just remember I'm only a call away if you need me," I nod my head in acceptance as I pour myself another cup. Not too long after Zane and Cindy joined us at the table. "So are you about ready to head out Sparky," Zane chimed in? "Yes, I am, whenever you're ready," Two hours later we finally leave the house "Sparky can I ask you a question?" Zane asks in almost a whisper as we're driving along. "Sure, but you don't have to whisper," I laugh. He looks over at me and smiles. "I was just wondering what you were going to do with the Vritra house,"

"I'm keeping that house. I don't wish anyone else's loved one to die there."

"So would you mind if I use it for like research,"

"I'm not sure, let me get back to you on that ok,"

"Sure, I guess, but right now would be the perfect time to start when everything is quiet." When we finally make it to the realtor's office Zane shuts up about using the house as a research place for paranormal groups. "Hello, Mr. Surrell are you ready to go look at some homes we have chosen for you," Mary the real estate lady asks as she smiles brightly at us. "Yes, ma'am, just show us the way," I babble, trying to sound excited about the prospect of owning a new home. Zane and I climb back into my car as we follow Mary to the first house on her list, a single-story brick ranch home, nothing too special about it. "I like this one," I said bluntly with no enthusiasm in my voice. I didn't want to go out house hunting again. I only bought that forsaken house for Alex and me to live in, because we were supposed to spend the rest of our lives there. I blankly hear Mary "Mr. Surrell? Mr. Surrell? Are you ok," I blink as I start coming out of my memory of Alex. "Oh, um, yes, I'm fine," I stutter. "What was it you were saying," She stared at me like she wasn't convinced, but went on repeating what she had previously said anyway. "I was saying that maybe you would like to see the other homes before you make up your mind.''I looked over at Zane."What do you think," I ask. He doesn't even answer my question. He looks at Mary and says. "He would like to see the other homes you chose since you did spend a lot of time picking them for him to see," Then he turns to look at me and raises one eyebrow as to say there's your answer. Mary shows us two other places that were similar to the first one. The only thing that was different was their location in town, but the last place was different. It was just outside of town, an older white home with blue trim with a couple of outbuildings. Mary starts her fast-talking just as we get out of the car. "Now I just threw this home together to spruce up the list a little," We walked around on the outside enjoying the full view. "How many acres does it have," I blurt out. Mary looks pleased and startled by my inherent interest in the place. "It has five acres that go with this three bedrooms, two bath home, now let me tell you it does need some work done to it, but nothing major," I look over at Zane who just nods his head in agreement. "Would you like to look around inside," Mary beamed as she noticed my pleased look and started walking toward the front door while Zane and I followed suit. She was right, it did need some touching up on the walls but nothing major. This house was perfect for me, nothing big and fancy, just simple. We followed Mary back to her office and signed the papers as she handed me the keys to my new home. "I know I shouldn't have bought the house outright but... Oh well," We made it back to my "Vritra House," I immediately started packing things starting in my bedroom. If I didn't have to stay here tonight I wasn't going to. As I start carrying boxes down I hear Zane and Cindy quietly arguing. "You're completely insane to want to move into this house," Cindy exclaims in a whisper where her voice is almost a squeak. "Besides, Sparky isn't going to let anyone move in here, even you. "We won't know unless we ask, isn't that what you always say, my dear." He smirks knowing he had just used my words against her. I slowly finish making my way down the stairs expecting to break up their spat, then giving them a piece of my mind, but as I make my turn to enter the living room I stop as I see Cindy turn and look at Zane dead in his eyes. You can see the anger, but also the sadness in her eyes. "You know what Zane," She screams loudly. "You can stay here and get yourself killed, but I'm not ready to die just yet," Then storms out the front door. Zane stands frozen, staring at the door his wife just stormed out of. I walk over to him, put my hand on his shoulder and say. "Go after her or you'll regret it for the rest of your life, don't let this demon tear your family apart."
