Chapter 5 FIVE

Soft steps got their attention, and when they turned to the sound, Xanthos stopped beside them with his hands in his jeans' pockets as he admired the sea. He kept silent, giving them the privacy they needed to finish up whatever moment they were having there.

"Your words meant a lot to me, Giagiá. I love you!" Elissa kissed once again the top of Melina's head and turned to the man on their side.

"Take good care of her, son." He bent down to her to receive her blessing kiss on his forehead. He knew Elissa since he was a small boy and respected her as his own grandmother.

"I will Giagiá." He assured, and watched her get in the house, and then, "Are you okay, Mel?"

He had concern on his face. She could see it by the frown on his forehead. How did he know? Gabs! She wanted to get angry at her friend, but she knew she meant well and wanted her happiness. He crossed the small wall to the other side and sat, staring at her. She wanted so much to fall in love with him, see him as a boyfriend. They've gone out a few times. But her heart saw him as a friend, and there was nothing she could do about it. He was a beautiful man, inside and out, with a great heart, and he deserved someone who fully appreciated him.

They became friends when Evangeline got sick; she needed a lawyer to deal with the hospital. Gabs was friends with a very good one and called him right away. Melina didn't imagine the lawyer would be an Artemis of beauty with a big heart. They never got into the subject of Eve's father. Melina didn't see the need for him to know about her baby origins, nor what had happened to her back in New York, and since he never intruded, she kept to herself. Besides Giagiá and her uncle, who lived in Athens, only Gabs knew the full story, and she trusted her enough to have kept the secret.

"I will be, hopefully. Her father wants her sole custody." Tears stung in the back of her eyes. "I'm so scared. I can't lose her. It will be the end of me." She pulled some air into her lungs as if she didn't know how to breathe anymore. "This is the third time, no! The fourth, I don't even know anymore, he double crosses me. What's wrong with him?" She screamed in a fit of rage.

"You won't lose her. Judges don't take kids away from their mothers without a plausible cause." Xanthos had never seen her so pissed before, and it was unacceptable to see her suffering like that. He wanted to kill the bastard for putting her through such an ordeal. He never asked her what kind of relationship she had with Eve's father, but what he understood by her words it had been a troubled one.

"You don't know him, he's not any guy. He has power and money. I had a faint remembrance of the names of the lawyers who signed the process, so I researched them." Tears fell unchecked. "They are one of the most renowned in their field, they never lost a single cause." Her body shook with sobs. "And I'm just... me."

Xanthos was barely keeping his hands to himself. If she continued depressed, he would have to do something he'd regret later. He combed his well kept hair with his finger, messing up the strands as he looked back at the ocean. Who this asshole thought he was to show up, thinking he had any rights on Eve. No, he hadn't. Only the people of this island knew everything Melina went through for this girl, and he wouldn't let him take her away from her, even if he had to bring the entire Santorini to court.

"Where are the documents?" Melina stood up, going to the patio table. The brown envelope sat there untouched. She sagged in the chair, staring absently at the envelope. "Can I take it with me? I have to study them."

"Please." Melina felt so at a loss with the news. How could he stoop so low? Hadn't he hurt her enough already? She wasn't sure if she couldn't face Eve's father in that court. Just the thought frightened her. She didn't know how she would survive the coming fateful day.

Another anguished sob came out her lips as she looked at his face, and he didn't hold himself anymore. He sat on a chair and pulled her to his lap. Xanthos got surprised when she didn't fight him off, like she would have when he embraced her, bringing her closer to his heart. That told him how much everything affected Melina. He had seen this fragile side of her when Eve was born, but it did not deceive him, because underneath all that she was strong and she knew how to fight. Once she felt cornered, the kitty would extend her claws and scratch back.

"Enough of this misery, Melina." He called her short. "Nothing will happen. Please don't suffer in advance. We'll fight for her. You are her mother, and she is Greek. It won't be easy for him. It doesn't matter who his lawyers are. Trust me, he's not in the US. Here is Greece." He massaged her back, easing her pain, and his face softened when her crying stopped and she sighed.

Melina raised her face to him with sad eyes. And he cursed fate. He wanted her to see him in a different light, not as brother or friend, and now with her there nestled in his lap, sorrow speaking, he felt the need to comfort her, to love her the way she deserved. He brought his hand to her face, and she stared at him as he caressed her cheek with his knuckles. His eyes traveled to her mouth, and when the tip of her tongue licked her suddenly dried lips, he followed the movement and got closer. Melina blinked, dissipating the moment, and when he was almost reaching her, she turned her face.

"No, I'm sorry." She whimpered. "We can't, Xan."

"Why? I can make you happy, Melina. Eve would have a stable home. I could protect you both. Please, give me a chance. It kills me, seeing you suffer this way."

"Because you are too good of a man, and you deserve a woman with her full heart set on you. I'm not that woman, Xanthos. I'm sorry."
