"Adam, will you marry me?"
A smile bright enough to surpass the brilliance of the chandelier hanging above us slowly made its way to my lips. With eager fingers, I opened the scarlet heart-shaped box showing a pair of golden band that glittered beautifully with it's dotted diamonds. The crowd faded in a distance and the noisy background dissolved. There was only one person existing for me-it was Adam.
I swallowed hard upon hearing no response and the smile I displayed faltered from doubt. My eyes cast him a fearful glance. Why is he taking too long to respond? Maybe I was mistaken and Adam isn't serious with our relationship just as the gossip I accidentally heard from from my co-worker's lips.
No, it can't be. I chastised myself from doubting the man I love. He was a decent man like no other. In many ways he had showed me how pure his intention is. I am proud to admit he hasn't cheated on me once inside our two year old relationship. Handsome and popular that he is, he was surrounded with abundant amount of temptations but he proved me his loyalty and that would be enough reason not to doubt this man.
My attention shifted to the ring which I held with trembling fingers. The tiny glittering item cost me a fortune. To be quite specific, it was equivalent to my five months worth of salary as a Room Attendant in a business hotel. If only he knew the price he will surely have a mini heart attack. But sacrificing my savings up to the last drop was all worth it. I'm willing do to everything just for my Adam.
My wide expectant eyes met a pair of exquisite deep blue eyes that held a paper-blank expression. Adam's disheveled blonde hair fell to his eyes and he brushed it upwards with his fingers. He looked even more handsome now with the expensive shirt under his signature denim jacket and a fashionable jeans sponsored from one of the clothing company he was under contract.
"Please marry me Adam," I repeated as if my first declaration of marriage wasn't enough. I swallowed hard once more. Fear gripped my heart tightly upon hearing no response for the second time.
My desperate eyes darted from the ring that glittered with life from the brightness of the chandelier then back to the face of the man I fell in love with from the moment he asked for my number.
Stubborn as I was, I know no defeat. My still hopeful eyes stared at him tenderly. Adam and I had been together for long two years, enough for me to realize he was the man whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, he was the only man meant for me. If I can't have him for this lifetime I might as well climb the highest mountain and go hermit.
It's understandable that the unexpected proposal stunned Adam. Who wouldn't be when he was only aware that this is just an ordinary dinner date I arranged. But it was my intent to surprise him, the thrill would be gone if he have known about my proposal all along. But seeing his expression now made me wished I had informed him before we held this dinner date which I sneak between my tight schedule just to prepare and make it memorable.
But without a doubt, I strongly believe he will accept my proposal. Adam love me. Yes he love me! I cheered inwardly, avoiding discouragement.
"This is beautiful baby." He replied finally. The response lit my face up with relief. His fingers reached the box, took the bigger ring inside, and slipped it on his middle finger.... Not on the fingers where a wedding ring should be.
The jovial smile on my lips faded. My heart sank when he did not bother to slip the smaller pair to my ring finger.
Adam captured my fingers before I could even react. He took the box out of my hold. The sweet gesture melted my disappointment in an instant. His enchanting blue held mine captive while his hands enclosed my fingers. The gesture softened my heart and I held no grudge anymore.
A sweet sigh escaped my lips. At the same time a dreamy look appeared on my countenance. This is it, he will say yes. The thought made me tear up. I waited almost an eternity for this moment to arrive. Now that it finally happened like a magical fairy tale I wanted to burst into tears, too overwhelmed to utter a word. This was the happiest moment of my life. I thought as his hold tightened on my fingers.
His hold momentarily tightened until his fingers almost crushed my fragile bones. His eyes flared and his jaw clenched but before I could fathom the depths of the emotion, it quickly faded as if it did not exist at all. For a while I thought he was enraged but the insane idea wich held no basis was quickly dismissed before it could create complications.
The magical moment I wish not to end was interrupted when the waiter arrived to collect our orders. My shoulders fell in dismay when Adam let my fingers go without even saying if he wholeheartedly accept my marriage proposal.
I breathed thankfully when the waiter scribbled our orders on the pad and immediately turned towards the counter to submit our orders. I took a long, deep breath before I manage to look enthusiastic before capturing his attention.
"Adam?" I whispered, trying to steal his attention away from his phone his eyes were currently busy into.
"Yes Ava?" He did not even raise his head to see the tears that gathered on the corner of my eyes.
'Please be patient Ava.' I repeated the mantra inside my head and smiled instead. The tears attempting to fall down my cheeks was temporarily kept at bay. "Will you-"
Adam quickly rose from the chair when his phone vibrated. "Excuse me for a while." He said seriously and left the table to answer the call out of earshot. He did not even bother to cast me a quick glance as he walk away.
I looked towards the ceiling, an attempt to stop my tears from falling. Upon feeling that I calmed down a bit, I took the glass of water and drank the contents straight to ease the lump on my throat
