Chapter 8 Godmother

Kyler raised his eyebrows thinking that he would reward her handsomely as long as she proved herself to be a good accountant. He was just worried that she might think too highly of herself.

At the same time, Audrey's cellphone rang. She glanced at the caller ID for just a second before she answered it.

"Yes, we've gotten off the plane, so we will be coming there shortly. Please wait for us. See you later."

After hanging up the phone, she scooped up her son and said to Kyler, "If there's nothing else, then we will take our leave." She then walked away from there, holding Harlan in her arms.

One hour later

"Audrey, this way, please..."

Audrey looked around and saw a woman waiting for her at the restaurant's entrance.

She was dressed in a dark gray dress and had long dark hair that cascaded from her shoulders. She had delicate features and soft skin that made her look like a college student. However, she was just the same age as Audrey, only a lot more popular and powerful in the entertainment industry. She was a famous entertainment agent.

After paying for the cab, Audrey picked up Harlan and walked towards Rylee Zhou.

"Baby! Did you miss your godmother?" Rylee exclaimed as she stepped forward to pinch Harlan's cheek lovingly.

However, Harlan moved quickly, covering his face with his small hands as he said, "Aunt Rylee, you can't pinch me anymore. I am a grown-up now."

"Let me just pinch your cheeks once... I will buy your favorite cola flavored fried chicken wings and some cheesy pasta, okay?" Rylee pleaded.

"No." Seeing that Harlan was not convinced, Rylee tried to bribe him some more.

"I'll buy you some game equipment. Didn't you say that you wanted some virtual weapons for your game? How about I buy you all of them?"

After thinking for a few minutes, Harlan decided to accept her deal. "Okay, but you can only pinch my cheeks once."

As soon as Rylee heard that, she picked him up, kissed him on the cheek before she pinched his cheeks, and only after that did she walk into the restaurant with a satisfied smile.

Once they entered a private VIP room, Rylee called for the waiter and ordered two set meals, along with a special order of grilled cola wings for Harlan.

"The roads around here have changed a lot. I almost lost my way trying to come here."

"I am not surprised... You haven't been here in nearly six years. These routes change every month that sometimes even I get lost, even though I live here." Although it sounded like Rylee was complaining, she was actually quite proud of B City's development.

Looking at her son, Audrey felt as though a lifetime had passed, and not just six years.

When Audrey had found out that she was pregnant six years ago, she had considered getting an abortion. However, when that person who saved her had learned about it, he had stopped her. He had told her that the baby was a gift from God, and that, she would regret it if she aborted the child.

That person had given her a lot of support and comfort during her pregnancy.

If it had not been for Harlan, Audrey would not have been able to pull herself through. She believed that her son was the one who gave her a second life.

"Your food is here, ma'am," the waiter said as he brought over their food.

Harlan was so hungry that instead of waiting for his mother to feed him, he picked up the chopsticks and began eating.

"Eat some more if you like." Rylee smiled at him as she served him more food.

"Oh, your son is so adorable that every time I see him, it makes me want to have a kid of my own too."

"Then why don't you have a child?" Audrey said as she glanced at Harlan, her heart filled with pride. Harlan looked very handsome even though he was just a little boy.

Moreover, he was also talented and smart. He made a lot of money working as a live stream host for the YUTO video network. And with each passing year, Harlan's income was growing more. In fact, he was making more money than his mother, Audrey.

"How can I have a child if I'm single? Besides, if you look closely, I am sure you can see that Harlan's looks come from his father's outstanding genes. Tell me, who is his father?" Rylee asked in a low voice so that Harlan would not hear them.

Upon hearing those words, Audrey's expression darkened.

Thinking of the man's handsome face, she gritted her teeth and clenched her fists.

"Now is really not a good time to talk about it." 'I will talk about it after the results come out, ' she thought to herself.

"By the way, have you met your father?" Rylee quickly changed the topic after sensing the unpleasantness in Audrey's tone.

With a strange and meaningful smile, Audrey replied, "As the female lead, of course I will show up on the stage at the best time. If I choose to see them, I must give them a big surprise!"

Upon seeing her best friend who had the same appearance but different temperament compared to six years ago, Rylee was having mixed feelings.

"What was your experience away from here like? If you really were okay all those years, then why didn't you contact me? I was so worried about you... Do you know how bad I felt when I heard the news of your accident?"

Looking at Rylee's concerned expression, Audrey apologized to her with a hug.

"I am so sorry for worrying you." Sensing the gloominess in the situation, Audrey tried to ease the atmosphere.

"I should have come to you long ago. If I had, then I might also have become successful in the entertainment industry by now."

Rylee snorted and said, "It's too late now! Even if you are beautiful, the entertainment industry now is dominated by the young. As a mother, you don't have the same chance as you did six years ago."

Audrey showed an expression of regret, but Rylee was not buying it. She felt like she deserved to know the answers, so she asked, "What happened that year? Why did your dad say that you were dead? Why weren't you here all these years?"

Rylee was in the dark about Audrey's life for almost six years. When she had happened to run into her in A Country some time ago, Rylee finally learned that her friend was alive, and that, she had a son.

She was so glad to see her friend back then that she could not ask her about the details of her exile. But now, she wanted to know the real story behind her decision to leave the country.

At the mention of the past, Audrey's expression darkened and she replied, "Six years ago, I was thrown into the sea, and I almost drowned. But then, fortunately for me, a yacht came along and saved my life. Although I survived, I became sick after that. I wanted to return when I finally recovered, but that's when I found out that I was pregnant..."

Upon hearing that, Rylee wanted to know more, so she interrupted her.

"Who on earth wanted to hurt you? Tell me his name and I will deal with him! How dare that person hurt my best friend? I'll skin them alive!"

Audrey gave her a sweet smile when she heard those words.

"Thank you, but I'm going to take revenge on my own. That is the only way for me to get all this hatred off my heart."

She knew that Rylee came from a wealthy family, but Audrey had to do that on her own because she could not let her friend deal with her troubles. Moreover, she could not bear to let anyone innocent get involved, especially her best friend.

"If you need my help, just come to me. Don't hesitate," Rylee said as she patted Audrey's shoulder gently.

"Don't worry, I will come to you if I need your help. I am not going to feel shy about it," Audrey said with a grin.

"Oh, I almost forgot." Saying that, Rylee picked up her handbag and handed a key card to her.
