Chapter 1 We Don't Owe Each Other (Part One)

Today, the biggest church in K City was beautifully decorated for a wedding, and many people came to witness such a grand event.

Everyone's eyes were full of envy as they looked at the two people standing in front of the altar.

However, the groom didn't look happy at all. Coldness and contempt could been seen on his face.

Although he didn't want this wedding, there was nothing he could do.

The reason he agreed to hold the ceremony was that he wanted to hurt that woman even more.

And the reason was simple. He hated her.

Hating someone was exhausting. But he was unable to let go of the past.

On the other hand, the woman standing next to him was full of happiness. She had been looking forward to this wedding for a long time. Finally, this day came.

However, would this wedding really lead her to a happy life in the future? Or this would be her worst nightmare?

"Mr. Barry Nan, do you take Miss Maya Yan as your lawful wife from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and protect her all your life, and be faithful to her forever?" the priest asked.

But before Barry Nan could answer, sharp footsteps were heard at the entrance of the church. The sound of high heels on the floor attracted everyone's attention, and they all turned their heads curiously. There, they saw a woman walking towards the aisle.

She was wearing a long white coat. Maybe because it was snowing in K City today and it was too cold outside, her cheeks flushed. There were also some snowflakes on her hair.

The woman was undeniably beautiful, but she looked awful right now. Her eyes were red and swollen, and there were still traces of tears on her face.

Obviously, she had been crying for days.

"What is she doing here?" one of the guests mumbled. Although her voice was not so loud, the other guests heard her clearly since the church was very quiet.

"She must be hating Barry to the core now, right?" another guest commented and gave the woman a sympathetic look.

"Yeah. They were such a sweet couple before. But then, her life turned into a living hell. She must feel so terrible," someone said with a sigh.

Those words reached the woman's ears and were like knives that cut her heart. But her expression didn't change. She still looked calm as if she was not seeing and hearing anything.

But deep inside, her heart was bleeding.

Maya Yan, the bride, slowly turned around and looked at Lea Xiao. She was wondering why the other woman suddenly showed up at her wedding.

Her heartbeat went abnormally fast. She couldn't hide the fear and trepidation on her face. Lea Xiao, who was walking towards them right now, was the woman who once loved Barry Nan so much.

In everyone's eyes, they were incomparably in love before.

Obviously, Barry Nan also didn't expect that Lea Xiao would come today. And worse was, she was clothed in mourning.

Was she here to make trouble? Perhaps she was here to let the world know what kind of bastard he was.

But Barry Nan didn't care at all. Even if the whole world thought that he was cruel, none of them knew the difficulties he had gone through.

Barry Nan pressed his lips tightly and raised his chin, waiting for Lea Xiao to come closer to them.

In just a year, their lives had changed tremendously. And those changes were indeed surprising and exhausting.

Maya Yan turned her head slightly and looked at Barry Nan. She could feel that he was hiding something, but she just couldn't figure it out.

Lea Xiao stopped when she was about five meters away from Barry Nan. With a bitter smile on her face, she said, "Congratulations, Barry. Are you satisfied now?"

She had always thought that their love was enough for them to be together until the end. But she didn't expect that the cruel fate would tear them apart.

It was difficult to understand why fate was so cruel to them.

There were so many grudges between them that hindered them from being happy.

"I also have a question for you. Are you satisfied with the gift that I gave to the Xiao family?" Barry Nan asked coldly. His lips curled up in disgust. The ferocity in his eyes made people tremble with fear.

"Why me?" Lea Xiao asked bitterly. She was about to cry. But now that everyone's eyes were on her, she must keep the dignity of the Xiao family. Although the Xiao family was destroyed, and there was nothing left in them, she still had to maintain her pride for her family.

She wouldn't allow Barry Nan to look down on her.

Barry Nan slowly walked towards Lea Xiao. His every step was so heavy that it seemed to oppress her heart. It was too painful for her.

"The Xiao family destroyed my family. I didn't do anything wrong to you, Lea Xiao. I just gave you what you deserved. And you're asking me why it's you? This time, he was already in front of Lea Xiao. He was so close to her. But even with such a distance, she still felt that he was too far and unreachable.

His voice was so low, so no one else heard him even though the whole church was quiet, and everyone was all ears.

She was stunned. What he had said was new to her.

"What do you mean that your family was destroyed?" she asked, giving him a dull look.

"Do I need to tell you the details? Okay. You listen carefully." He walked to her side and whispered in her ear, "When your family was having a good time, my family suffered a catastrophe. While you were enjoying a happy family, I was in the orphanage. I was alone, helpless, and desperate. When the Xiao family's business prospered, the Nan family was completely forgotten. Now tell me, should I hate you or not?"

His every word echoed in her ears.

It was a whisper, but she felt like it shattered her eardrum. His words also pierced through her heart and smashed it.

Did he say that he became an orphan because of the Xiao family?

If that was true, she couldn't blame him then.
